Avalonia Graphical Style

Archive: 9 posts

Hello everyone! I'm currently making a level with a futuristic and clean graphical style that is similar to that of Avalonia's levels. From my understanding, their theme is called "Near-Future", but I cannot find any examples of the style in real-world art and architecture or in other games. I'm very fond of Avalonia's atmosphere, so would anyone be able to help me define and exemplify the Avalonian visuals? (Of course I am including Set the Controls for the Heart of the Negativitron in the list of levels that employ the graphical style.)

Thank you all.

I always thought it was Space Age style, maybe that'll get a few useful Google hits. And try the spaceship in Wall-E.2012-07-23 11:15:00

I'm finding few white/crisp pieces of architecture, but Space Age sounds correct. All of the pop magazines and examples that I've discovered seem to indicate that it is so.2012-07-23 14:14:00

Well this was supposed to be about LBP 2's graphical styles in general and not about my own level. Ah well, if it works to move it to Ideas and Projects, fine.2012-07-23 18:23:00

Hi,

I first thought it was some kind of vintage future (how 1980's people imagined the future would look), but come to think of it, it doesn't really look retro-futuristic. This movement is much more colorful (http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m57k3yh0Ui1qzzvavo1_1280.jpg) and googie-inspired than Avalonia levels. I might not be able to name this "movement", but I definitely can give you a few sources of inspiration. If you're looking for impersonal, cold, sanitized, white architecture, I suggest you watch Logan's Run (http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/.a/6a00d8341c630a53ef015433376292970c-640wi). It's a 1970's movie, so I guess it'll fit your needs. THX 1138 (http://collider.com/wp-content/uploads/thx_1138_movie_image_blu-ray_01.jpg) might be useful too, although I've actually never seen it. The recent movie The Island could do the job too.

Talking about pure science-fiction categories, I thought about cyberpunk or biopunk, but as it turns out, these subcategories look much darker and "dirtier" than LBP's fluffy high-tech levels. This is a theme I actually disliked (as I said, I find it quite cold and impersonal, sanitized) so I'm afraid I might not be of any help! :/

Thank you for your recommendations Oddmania! Don't worry, I'm not going to copy the Avalonia visuals directly; I'm actually most interested in the geometric designs of the foreground. My problem is figuring how to make my level look good and complex without stressing the thermometer. Thus far, my attempts have been futile. (Too many vertices and shapes :/ )2012-07-23 22:38:00

I wouldn't care that much about the evil (yes, it is!) thermometer if I were you. Just make your level as good and complete as possible, even if it means adding a level link or emitting the next part (and demitting the previous ones).2012-07-24 20:19:00

I'd need a lot of workshop levels for me to emit all of my level (haha), but that is actually my plan: emit and destroy. Yes indeed.2012-07-25 02:07:00
