Is Final Fantasy Versus XIII dead? As it turns out, no, it isn't.

Rumor : Final Fantasy Versus XIII is dead. (http://kotaku.com/5927645/rumor-final-fantasy-versus-xiii-is-dead)

It's been six years since Square Enix first showed Final Fantasy Versus XIII's debut trailer. Six long years. When that trailer premiered, George W. Bush was president, Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden were alive, and the global financial crisis had not yet hit. 2006 was a different world, a long, long time ago.

Now Kotaku has learned that Final Fantasy Versus XIII is no more. Kotaku has heard from several sources that the game, as originally intended, is done for.

One source tells Kotaku that Final Fantasy Versus XIII was officially cancelled within the last few weeks. The decision impacted morale at Square Enix and staff were reportedly saddened by the move. Square Enix, this source added, has also decided to let Final Fantasy Versus XIII die quietly on the vine and fade away, instead of officially announcing its cancellation. This would likely be due to the fact a public acknowledgement of a Versus' cancellation could impact things like Square Enix's stock prices.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII has been M.I.A. for the past few months, save for the occasional, brief mention. Earlier this spring, Final Fantasy Versus XIII designer Tetsuya Nomura spoke with Japanese game mag Famitsu about the title, which has only ever been seen in trailer and screenshot form.

"We're almost done with preparing the latest info for the game," Nomura told Famitsu. "Because of a totally unrelated reason, there are circumstances in which that info cannot be released."

That was March. Then in May, Nomura once again commented on the game, saying to Game Informer, "We would like to ask for your patience on an official announcement for this title. It always takes time when tackling the challenge of doing something completely new, but we are doing our best to bring information to the fans as quickly as we can. Your patience is greatly appreciated."

Then E3 came and went with no sign of Versus, which wasn't that strange if you remember the game was not at last year's Tokyo Game Show either. Whatever happened to the game over those six years?whether it underwent radical changes or simply couldn't come together?it seems Square Enix has finally decided to cut its losses.

Another source tells Kotaku that, a few months back, Final Fantasy Versus XIII's development and resources had actually been folded into another game, which is to be the next numeric Final Fantasy title, Final Fantasy XV. Whether this meant actual game assets and code or simply the movement of staff was unclear. This information was independently corroborated by yet another source, though it's important to note both had learned of the "folding" prior to the more recent news of its outright cancellation.

The Final Fantasy XIII branded types have not been set in stone: another spinoff title Final Fantasy Agito XIII had its name changed to Final Fantasy Type-0. So what was originally planned as an entire mini-franchise by Square, with multiple titles spanning various platforms, looks now to be focused on the adventures of Lightning.

Whether it's been cancelled entirely or had resources absorbed into a newer, larger project, the game we once knew as Final Fantasy Versus XIII would seem to be no more. Even if Final Fantasy Versus XIII has been cancelled, I'm inclined to believe that whatever Versus was, or whatever had been created for the game, will turn up in some form in Final Fantasy XV. Surely, Square Enix would not cancel a game and completely dump all the work it's done? Right?

When Kotaku contacted Square Enix about whether or not Final Fantasy Versus XIII was still in development, the game maker released the following statement: "We have no information on the status of Final Fantasy Versus XIII, but will be sure to update you as it becomes available." Keep in mind, I wasn't asking for an update per se, I simply asked if Square Enix was still making a game it had already announced six years ago. Square Enix did not reply to Kotaku's requests for clarification regarding whether Versus was still in development or not.

Square Enix has a Final Fantasy event coming up in Tokyo in late August and September. One of the stage events is centered around the Final Fantasy XIII Project and the Lightning saga (so a Final Fantasy XIII-3 reveal?). None of the announced stage events center around Final Fantasy Versus XIII, something that Japanese gamers were quick to point out on game sites and blogs.

So, is Final Fantasy Versus XIII finally and officially dead? Without confirmation from Square Enix, we can't say for sure. While these reports certainly indicate the long-awaited game has been cancelled, Square's reluctance to acknowledge them means those desperately wanting to see more of the project still have a glimmer of hope to hold onto.

But if the game fails to make an appearance at either the upcoming Final Fantasy celebrations or the 2012 Tokyo Game Show? Then yeah, given what we've heard (particularly of Square's reported desire to kill the game quietly), you'd be a lot safer assuming Versus XIII is kaput and start looking forward to the next big FF game.

http://image.jeuxvideo.com/smileys_img/4.gif I don't really know how I feel about this. If the game actually happens to have been cancelled, then it means T. Nomura's team will have a free hand to work on Kingdom Hearts III, which is a good thing according to me (as a Kingdom Hearts player). Versus XIII looked like a darkest Final Fantasy game, though. And it's quite disappointing to know it may never come out.

What's your thought on that?

PS: Talking about vaporwares, does the much talked-about Last Guaradian still exist?

I wouldn't be surprised if this is true. XIII and it's associated games were planned to be a decade long compilation of games (which, in hindsight is a ridiculously ambitious and risky business venture for any company) but given the first game and XIII-2 weren't exactly received with universal acclaim and the very poor reception of XIV it would make sense for SE to shift its plans and cut their potential losses.2012-07-20 16:20:00

There are too many Final Fantasy games and I can't help but feel the series is....well, dying. If not already dead.

festering in a pool of it's own excrement and bodily fluids, whited eyes and a look of morbid deadness splayed upon it's rotting face.

I really couldn't get through the latest one.. all it is, is fight, amazing graphics, fight. Not much in between.

UPDATE: Erren Van Duine (alias Kagari), chief editor of RPGsite.net, who is close to some Square Enix members, has claimed on NeoGAF's official forums "It goes against information I was told quite recently, which was that Nomura is hard at work on the game and something of it will be shown at TGS." (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=40064380&postcount=27)

There remains a glimmer of hope!

im pretty sure no one really cares about final fantasy anymore these days. i think it's time for it to end. it's a 80% chance that it died or 20% they put it aside while they work on other games they are suppose to do. i believe that there was a final fantasy rythem game that came out already. if they are still working on it then we could be seeing it for ps4 XD and it would screw up the franchise like duke nukem forever when they first showed that game over 10 years ago and release it last year...2012-07-23 16:15:00

I call hype/ marketing scam! oh noes!!! everyones forgot about our game!!! I know lets claim it's cancelled then release a trailer and say we decided to continue with it to please fans, that'll work!!!
frankly I agree with sunbunny, the franchise has become beyond a joke now, its milked so hard these days that its almost running dry. It wouldn't be so bad if the games didn't revolve around a bland and boring battle system folowed by a cutscene wich tells about a plot that is, simpley put, un-necesarily complicated beyond belief.

I think fans really need to calm down and the internet is blowing this rumor out of proportion. For one, it is first and foremost a rumor:

"We have no information on the status of Final Fantasy Versus XIII, but will be sure to update you as it becomes available."

If SE wants to cancel versus, they will formally announce it. The fact that FFVXIII constantly appears in the top 10 of japans most wanted games, I doubt its something they will let go without an official confirmation. And even then, the game that is announced in place of versus as SE "Big Budget Title", is going to have to be not only more promising and interesting than Versus, it will also have to be well in development. A mere trailer is only going to irritate the fanbase even more.

Also think of the revenue. FF XIII-3 wont sell as good as FF XIII-2 simply because the fanbase has diminished since the original game. SE wants to reveal an original title. This leads me to believe that Final Fantasy Versus could potentially be released under a different name( Think how Final Fantasy Agito changed to type 0 ), possibly even FF XV.

What I do know is SE takes a long time to just create their worlds and scenarios. The fact that FFVXIII already finished its scenerio's-I highly doubt SE plans on dropping an already established world, characters and fictions that are "apparently" already finished. People dont realize how long it takes to actually plan a final fantasy game, which is why they persist on staying in the FF XIII lore for so long.

My guess? FFVXIII is likely to be released under a different name and some FF XIII-2 DLC will be announced. I just dont see SE dropping the idea totally, when it was confirmed to be done in the first place. As to why the development team is struggling, its likely to do with the new luminous graphics engine FFV is expected to run. But remember, FFVXIII is being developed by a different team( KH staff specifially) than the main team that designed FFXIII. This has nothing to do with that game.

Like I said, SE wont release a FF XIII-3. Their numbers were good, but still dropped double since the release of FF XIII. I have a hunch, their rumored FF XIII game is a action rpg in the same universe.

If Versus is canceled, hopefully they just go back to the old school style rpg combat. No mmo inspired battle systems or action rpg hybrids. Give us the old goodness back in HD graphics and fans will be happy.

Final Fantasy Versus 13 is still alive, Square Enix has confirmed.
Last week Kotaku claimed (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-07-20-final-fantasy-versus-13-canned-report) the long in development PlayStation 3 action RPG had been cancelled. But Square Enix boss Yoichi Wada said on Twitter (https://twitter.com/yoichiw/statuses/227628674780909568) today (via Andriasang (http://andriasang.com/con20p/ff_versusxiii_cancel/)) that the rumour was "false".
"There's someone making a false rumour that Versus was cancelled," he said. "Haha... just a minute ago, the regular Versus meeting ended. If you saw the presentation of the city, it'd knock you off your feet - lol."
Concern about the game had been brewing after a no-show at E3 last month. Versus 13 was announced in May 2006.
Now, all eyes turn to the Tokyo Game Show, where fans will hope Square Enix re-reveals the game.

Other people seem to think that they're not cancelling it, but instead cutting its ties to FF13, maybe publishing it as FF15. But that's just another rumor.2012-07-24 14:19:00

It would probably sell more as a numbered entry than it would as a spin off.2012-07-24 14:38:00

I knew they were not cancelling it--but I agree a name change is needed. Just call it Final Fantasy Versus or Final Fantasy 15. It stands alone as its own original title, and it might not sell as well with XIII in its name. It can easily get confused for being a spin-of, even though it clearly isnt.2012-07-25 14:26:00

and so the stinky horrible carcass of this next final fantasy is dragged out from it's short-lived peace in a dirt hole.

Square Enix has completely rebuilt Final Fantasy XIV in a project that has now been rebranded "A Realm Reborn," the publisher said today.

Previously called "Version 2.0," this will be the next incarnation of Square's massively multiplayer online game, which has been modified quite a bit since it first came out in 2010. Square Enix says they've rebuilt the whole game from the ground up.

People weren't happy with Final Fantasy XIV. This is Square Enix's attempt to remedy that.

"Since announcing our plans for the future of the title last October, we have been working tirelessly to include all of the elements that we have promised in Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn," producer/director Naoki Yoshida said in a press release. "This new title not only becomes a symbol of a completely new Final Fantasy XIV, but also marks the beginning of a new stage as the latest title in the Final Fantasy series. I hope you're looking forward to it!"

Square also again committed to a PS3 release for the beleaguered title. Sony has said the PS3 version will coincide with the launch of A Realm Reborn this winter.

Since we're on the topic of final Fantasy, this seemed like something worth posting. I'm not sure whether ot not this would be good as it's own thread, or should just be an addition to this one. You guys can decide on that one.

35 hours into FF5 for the first time. The job system is way beyond the other old-school ffs though I haven't played 2 and 3. I really liked 12 when it came out and for no reason at all I never went back to it after ten hours in. Well I bought it and it arrived. The second I'm done with 5 I'm jumping on 12.2012-07-26 23:14:00

If it's one thing that annoys me it's the people that came in this thread just to say things like "FF is dead", or "how does SE make money as every FF is the same" . . . really? Every Final Fantasy is different. Some are questionable while others are gems. What I can say is that yeah SE has been driving the series into the ground in recent times with FFXIII, FFXIV, and so on.

BUT, many of the things that made FF so great back in its glory days are being brought back in FFXIII Versus, like the world map as one example, while still doing newer things not seen in the series before. Even if older fans don't give it a chance, there will always be a newer fanbase for the new gen of FF games. Not to mention they have redone FFXIV and I have strong hopes that it will be far better than the disaster the original FFXIV was.

So no FF is not dying. Every new main FF title still gets in top 10 lists including Gamefaq's top 10 most visited FAQs and top 10 sellers lists on their release. The amount of quality SE puts into the main FFs is still today almost unmatched in the console RPG series, especially in terms of story and visual detail of creating this fantasy world.
