Why does this game attract...

Archive: 19 posts

Why does this game attract sarcastic cynical hipsters, and by sarcastic cynical hipsters I mean the snobs find something negative to say about EVERYTHING. I'm not talking about giving negative feedback either I mean things "OMG why does everything and everyone suck in this world I just want to kill myself" kind of negativity.

This thread is more about my encounter with a hipster but just stick through it I'll try not to QQ too much. I was in this guys pod and by the way he was acting (Being a sarcastic ******* about everything) I knew he was going to be negative about everything so I tried to show him one of my levels to see what he'd say. He said "It would be a waste of my time" before I even told him what the level was. To try and get him to play I said that members of LBPC and Planetarium thought the concept was cool. He reply's by saying "The members of LBPC and Planetarium wouldn't know a good level if it bit them." O_o I'm not really too angry at his comments because I knew he wouldn't have anything good to say but my question is just WHY does this game attract these people? Its an E rated game with a lot of kids on it wouldn't it push away people like this?

It's not just this game. It's not even "gamers". It's just worthless [expletive]faces with nothing to contribute who find ways to force their non-contributory nothingness on people. They will always be attracted to any situation where they can do this.2012-07-20 01:39:00

You're thinking of Emo's. Hipsters are quite happy with their existence.

Emos are just... weird. It seems to be the new craze, since a lot of the little kids are doing it to be cool.

Some people think everyone and everything is beneath them and all others must be thankful to share the same oxygen as them, and since common courtesy isn't obligatory, they may say what they like.2012-07-20 14:36:00

Most of the kids on the game are far from emo. They may dress the part, but they have no idea what emo is or what it stands for.2012-07-20 15:12:00

People these days seem to focus on the negative because it makes them feel as if they have it tough. Youth, especially teenage believe that they have the weight of the world on their shoulders. "Oh, I've got school in the morning" big deal, We've all got a 40+ hour job to do. "Oh I love my girlfriend/Boyfriend and now she's/he's broken up with me after 2 weeks" Try 5 years and a divorce lawyer. My Point?? There is so much joy and happiness in this world but no body can see it because they don't want to see it. Being down and dull gets you more attention and sympathy than being happy and aware these days and that is the problem. The Spawn of the world feel neglected because they've got in easy.

Madness I know and I might have made no sense in that but I promise you this.... It's never as bad as it seems

Hate to admit it, but there are those cynical-type critical snobs that play this game. They're the kind of players that'll be brutally honest about everything and shoot stuff down like every day's a duck hunt.
Honestly, I just HATE being corrected or rejected, or having my opinion countered by some smart remark and a whole bunch of nonsense, but who doesn't? Those types of people just love to look or sound smart in front of others, and of course, being negative is the hop-hippinest-hippeni-hoppinest THANG nowadays, so they have to add that cynical tone to it.

Say there's a level about bunnies. Bunnies wearing sombreros. Everybody likes it, it's not bad, but it's not amazing. Everybody likes it because it's just cool.
But then SOOOMONE comes up and says
"The style is sloppy, the colors are sickening and annoying to look at, you misspelled "cheese", the music is bad, and the level doesn't make any sense. Rabbits don't wear hats. This sucks and I hate you. 1/10"
What the BARF dude? I know your job as a reviewer is to help to improve the creator's building, but you don't need to completely mutilate the corpse. We get the point, you didn't like it. You don't need to sound like an angry cat taking a dump.
They also tend to reply to things in a cynical and smart-alecy manner. "You're wrong, blah blah blah blah, I'm right, I'm lovin' it."
They enjoy doing this, and they usually make a joke out of it just to add insult to injury. It's like kicking someone, spitting in their face, kicking them again, and stuffing a sausage in their left ear before blowing them up.

I want to punch those people in the face.

You know, criticism has it's place. If I find something wrong with anything I will say it, and I will say it bluntly (except for certain situations). It doesn't make me smarter or anything like that, but criticism is one of the only ways you can improve yourself. As a community, we need to be able to discern between someone who is legitimately critical and gives good advice and people who are negative and cynical for the sake of being negative and cynical. One problem with this community is that people cannot discern between the two, and are willing to lump critics and the angsty ******** together. People, especially in the LBP community, need to respond to legitimate criticism in a way that's more productive than hostility. You just need to be able to tell if what the person is saying is reasonable. For example, "rabbits don't wear hats" would be a dumb point of criticism (were it serious rather than a joke). However, saying it has a sloppy style, that the music doesn't fit and that there are spelling mistakes ARE VALID POINTS OF CRITICISM.

And by the way, just because a majority of people like something doesn't mean the majority is right. A majority of players actually like the trash on the cool pages. Does it mean that I cannot criticize those levels?

Really, emo costumes have a lot of excessive pretty things to hide a lack of substance within the people that wear them, like one of Sony's tons of CoD rip-offs. There's a reason I haven't dove in with random noobs since day one. (Well, really a few. First there was when some of my friends ignorant of the community but not ignorant of the game's flaws played a lot of the cool levels with me. Then there was create mode. Then there was LBPC.)

I wasn't saying criticism itself is bad--in fact, most need it--I was just saying to make clear what is only necessary. Don't use all the ammo to kill one person. When it becomes an insult, then it's not valid. To me at least. I guess it's if the shoe fits. If I'm wrong, meh. Having my philosophy unsettled only means I'm learning.

TWANSITION

There's always gonna be those types of people though. The negative guys. I guess they want attention. Since tragedy attracts so much attention nowadays, I guess they figure that that's the best way to catch peoples' eyes. Honestly, it's only really annoying. I wish some people could just stop being such pessimists and quit griping for a change. I know that's what I'm doing right now, but this is more of a stupid rant that I've been holding in.
This game harbors every kind of person, it may not have aimed at every single type of player, but it sure got them. I don't think we can act the same way to every player because everyone has a unique way of responding. It's back to that preschool thing again--you can't fit the darn square in the circle hole because it's not a circle, it's a square.
This brings me to what SuperROBO said, except sort of different. The attention hogs want to target everyone, but they can't. The community's too massive and diverse (even though a lot of it falls for this kind of stuff). This is why I don't blame them, because some people either don't know better or don't care if they're playing copied or bad levels. They're only having fun, so leave them alone. They can't stop you from playing good levels, so why stop them from playing bad levels? Just because you want only what you want on the CP?
The community may be bad to some, but to others, it's just fine. Some may see them as ignorant or nooby, but they're just playing the game they way that makes it best for them. It may not make it the best for all, but it works for them.
So whining and slapping labels on everything and everyone isn't going to do a thing. Doing nothing results in nothing. I'm not talking about you directly, I just couldn't find any other word to use except "you". Could have used "Bob", or "Fred", but I didn't. So unless some people stop whining and realize that things aren't really as bad as they make them out to be. We cannot direct the wind, but we can adjust the sails.

I don't really think it attracts evil people. It's just that you notice people are mean more so than in other games, because it's focused on interaction between members of the community. Other games you just blow each other's heads off. Although "I hate u an ur lvl cuz it sux" doesn't really seem like sarcasm to me.
This thread reminds me of the time that I did Dive In. I joined a pod full of three sack people dressed up as emus (autocorrect changed emos to emus, but I find that extremely hilarious so I'm just going to leave it that way), and I was in my epic Dragon costume. And while they were busy reenacting a teenage romance novel, separated by moments of slapping each other senseless, I finally was just like "Hey guys . . . Want to play a level?" Which immediately earned the retort "ur ***" from the female member of the group. I couldn't stop laughing.

LBP™2 is one of those games where you can say the reverse of the popular phrase. Don't hate the game, hate the player.2012-07-31 18:41:00
