Quick Creator Question: Starting point

Archive: 17 posts

I'm a complete newbie to making a level but I know where to go if I need help with something. My only regret will be that I can't play online without tolerating severe wireless router lag/c-lag, and no-one else in my family would enjoy playtesting with me, mostly due to age difference.

One quick question though: My map (which I sketched out on a pad in advance) will be quite sizable both vertically and horizontally. It will effectively be two "storeys" high, three/four wide and will mostly be indoors, with the starting roof and outdoor finish being the only parts outdoors.

Where, and in what direction, should I start?

If I start from the top and tunnel downwards, I might have the entire level too low, and risk moving the entire thing upwards to continue. This sounds risky, as I might obliterate the entire thing.

If I start from the end, it would be easier to expand, but I may make more mistakes since A) it's the opposite direction to the one it will be played in and B) it would mean starting on the catapault end, backwards. I hope I won't get too frustrated to continue.

Once I get started, I can probably figure it out, but I wanted to know what you guys think.

Thanks for replying.

Hi There,
I usually start by putting a dark matter platform down away from the edges so you can build whichever direction you like. you can romove it later if you like or just continue your floor surface all the way down to the ground. It's good that you have a rough layout done so you know what general direction the level will go. Also i would advise designing in the order you are going to play it as you may change your mind about where you want the level to go as you build also it makes testing it far easier.

The sheer size of the level in create mode is actually quite large. I think it's... around 200 sackboy heights high off memory, far larger than 2 or 3 stories.

I would just think of the general direct I would want to go, more up or down, whether I will be going higher or lower than the start point, and then start from there.

Remember though if you are going top down to have some space to put contraptions above player visible height. Just something to be aware of.

Wow, that was quick.

Firstly, dunno what you mean by "Dark Matter Platform".

Which reminds me, I would probably have to get the Master Creator trophy first (play all tutorials). Unfortunately, that's not very easy when there's an entire family all trying to grab the PS3 for themselves.

Which also reminds me to try and get dad to buy those two extra controllers.

If you build a room or section and glue it to a block of Dark Matter (not the floor) you will be able to move the room around if you need to make some adjustments to it's location in your level. It's always a good idea to build your level in sections and comeback later and add details, final lighting, stickers, etc ..

So it's a material (the "Dark Matter")? Or a technique?

I'd go check but the PS3 is occupied right now. :S

I was reading this and didn't know you could do that so my question is how?

And to answer the topic starter:

You could just start your level and when you notice you run out of space just build a small elevator. in this way you can always start at a higher or lower place and you won't run out of space (except for left and right space that is)

you could also select whatever you have build (when its attached to dark matter materials) and move it to where you want it.

(warning though.. Mr bug might be around and b0rk your level )

Ooh! I just got an idea to help make the process easier.

Hook up my PS2 Eye Toy (no PS3 Eye for me. ), get a cam sticker, make it reallly big, then get out my sketch pad and paste the blueprints for each section onto the wall, so I can invite other creators on to help speed it up!

Lag, as ever, would be a ***** though. One semi-second of c-lag, and I'd have half the level stuck to someone's sack-crotch. :S

Cant create with people online yet.

While this is true, you can theoretically make a level locked and copyable, publish it, give the key to a friend...

...then they copy the level, and edit away. They then publish the changes, and give you the key...

It's not ideal though. But it is theoretically possible to have multiple people work on the same project. You can also capture an entire room as an object and then send it to a friend, or send parts like monsters or detailed objects.

He wanted to speed up the process. That really wouldnt help too much unless he had people doing different sections (Instead of adding to a copied one).2009-01-08 20:31:00

Start from the top, build it WAY higher than you need it to be and support it with a line of dark matter across the bottom.
When you finish get rid of the dark matter and place it against the wall but DON'T GLUE IT.

Oh, you mean it's one local machine co-op create only (for now)? Sorry, the relevant trophy got me confused. (Create a map and publish/Create a map with more than one player and publish).

And for collab maps, well, sounds interesting but I guess that's well out of my league for now.

EDIT: Hang on a sec, isn't text chat an option on the Popit in create?

3x3 (new)/ 2x1, 3x2 (main tutorials complete)

Popit tool, ? (next main tutorial), Hearted
Goodies, Character, Stickers
Tools, Text Chat (?), Try Again

I can't check tonight, and I'll only have three hours to myself tommorow so if someone can whip up a screenshot before then that'd be appreciated.

But if that's the case, wha? I hope it means Mm dropped it due to lag or sync problems, but are fixing it up and planning to release it...

Text chat is just there in create because it's always in popit. Create or not.
Also, Media Molecule said before releasing the game, that online create would not be there at release, but will definitely be added through a patch. As long as they didn't change their plans without informing us, it will be added sooner or later.

Concerning your level.. I think you should NEVER start from the finish and work towards the beginning. It will be very confusing, hard to develop and hard to test.
Start from the top and maybe make a few blocks to see roughly how big your level will be. Start higher than you need to, but avoid starting all the way up. Leave some space above your level, because you might always need some mechanisms or other things above your level.
Also, avoid moving your whole level. If it's quite complex, there will be a high chance that something will break. There's also a bug which doesn't let you drag-select certain objects, which might also be a problem.

Hope that helped
