How to make a Silhouette style level?

Archive: 22 posts

Hey folks, Im trying to create a silhouette style level (sorry if thats a spelling error), but i can't quite pull off the effect...

I have no Move Pack DLC, just to state that beforehand.

I'm trying to create a sharply black-white level, but i can never get the whites white enough and the darks dark enough, without not being able to see sackboy.

Any help on how to make a good silhouette level?

Have you tried making your level and then adding a thin layer of Silhouette material over all the level? Changing the color to white should work, but I'm not sure.

Just my 2 cents.

I have tried that, the material when set to white does not show lines where there are differences in landscape, and it also just looks flat grey.

Also, theres no way to alternate black and white sections like i had wanted.

I can't remember exactly how to do it, but I think you need to set darkness and fog to full and set a light background colour. Something like that anyway. Have a play with the lighting.

EDIT: Forgot to add, when you have your lighting set up that way you can use stickered glass to get different colours too (Or bright black/white shapes if that's what you're after). It ends up looking a bit like neon, as it looses it's texture and glows a bit. It's how I did this. (http://lbp.me/v/sjn-j2/photos)

I tried the glass method with background settings, and the result was blinding lol.

To better get an idea of the visual style Im attempting to re-create, here's a youtube link:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3F-COKXSvg&feature=youtube_gdata_player

That should show a level called black and white world, by JUMP_BUTTON.

That is the visual style I'm attempting to create.

Hi. If your trying to get a white backgrtound with a black silhouett, try this
first design your level (platforms, etc. But make the entire very back thin layer White Stickerpanel material (this seems to be the only material that shows up behind shilouette glass material, as white ...all the rest show up as grey).
For the very front thin layer, covering your level, make it Bright white silhouette glass material.
Next set the level lighting settings to...
LIGHTING...0
DARKNESS...0
FOG COLOR...0
FOG AMMOUNT...90%
COLOR CORRECTION.. Black and White
This 'should' make it so that the sackperson is black silhouette instead of grey, and the background will be white. Hope this helps

I don't think Jump's actually used sillouette lighting there tbh. It looks to me like a black background with the Colour Correction slider set to black and white. If you are still after sillouette though, I think Sean's hit the nail on the head (I knew it was something like that lol).

Well, I unfortunately don't have sticker panel material, since I don't have the move pack.

I know the visual style is possible without sticker panel, since the level I posted was made before the DLC came out.

So far, the closest ive come to replicting it is stickering carboard solid white or black, and setting a black white filter... It almost looks like it, but I cant see my sackboy

Actually, i think i may have used the wrong wording in the beginning, forgive me. Silhoutte implies I want a use of that glass material, while in reality, i just want bright black and white color scheme, including sackboy, which kind of creates a "limbo" esque type of look.2012-07-14 18:17:00

With the stickering of cardboard, have you tried stickering your sackboy the opposite colour of the background? i.e. if the sky is white sticker him black and vice versa. You can always use the glowing eyes as well to help make him stand out a bit. You can then force players to do the same by placing a sackbot which they control instead dressed in that way.

Other than that, placing hologram or certain glass material (silhouette, bubbles, pixelate etc) behind sillhouette material gives you a crisp white. The closest you can get to black with silhouette though is a very dark grey as far as I know. Sackboy will always be either light or dark grey as well.

I'd say your best bet is to use neon. Set it to white and the brightness to about 35% to get rid of the glow for the white, and the brightness to 0% for the black obviously. You can use the material tweaker to change the properties to whatever you like. Put the fog colour as black (the second setting from the left) and leave foginess at 0%. You should have the makings of a decent black and white level! I've had a play around with a few ideas like this for a black and white level I'm making and this seems to be the best for what I'm trying to achieve at least.

Is this kinda what you're looking for (I just went into a workshop level of mine and changed the lighting - nothing else)?

If so, I did it by setting the lighting as such:

http://wiki.lbpcentral.com/images/thumb/2/29/Icon_sun.png/32px-Icon_sun.png Lighting: All the way left, or darkest

http://wiki.lbpcentral.com/images/thumb/7/72/Icon_cloud.png/32px-Icon_cloud.png Darkness: All the way right, or again - darkest

http://wiki.lbpcentral.com/images/thumb/2/28/Icon_fog.png/32px-Icon_fog.png Fogginess: All the way left, or 0%

http://wiki.lbpcentral.com/images/thumb/9/94/Icon_fog_color.png/32px-Icon_fog_color.png Fog Colour: All the way right, or White

Does this help? Is it what you were trying to achieve?

My apologies, but I cannot see the images above, the spoiler tags do not open on my phone, and this phone is my only access to the internet.

Is there any chance I can get you to post them as a URL?

Hey again, new problem, but same related issue i guess.

How do i get the camera to stay locked in "front view" in play mode? It works in create mode, but in play mode, it goes right back to regular view...

A movie camera set to the lowest flatness gives the same effect. 2012-07-23 19:48:00

I can confirm vortex's method. lordwarblade has made a few silhouette levels, and they all use 100% darkness with an alternative fog colour. Nothing else is needed. This makes your character and the landscape black, but there are probably workarounds (like mentioned in the other posts) that may achieve other colours.2012-07-27 01:40:00

That's exactly what he's done. Lighting, dark and fogginess set to minimum, fog colour and colour correction set to 2nd notch. I just tested it myself and the effect is identical to Jump Buttons' level.
