Children with Leashes - The Horrid Parenting Thread!

Archive: 26 posts

The first time I saw a child on a leash, I couldn't believe how stupid parents could be.

Okay, okay, I didn't actually see a real child on a leash, I saw this pic on the interwebz.

http://thefortuno.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/children_on_a_leash_15.jpg

But it still made me kinda sad to see where humanity is heading.

I thought it might be interesting to see what sorts of horrible parenting skills you have witnessed, and what you think about them.

Fire away.

Thats normal, gets them used to walking while stopping them running after the first shiny that they see.2012-07-12 09:22:00

Feel sorry for the parents wasting money on a leash when they could just hold the kid's hand.2012-07-12 14:42:00

Yeah, harnesses are normal, but like Evil Clayton said, a parent could always use a friendlier method of keeping track of a child and hold hands. IMO it's sort of irresponsible to let your kid run around on their own. You could keep them near, but don't let them wander off to find Atlantis. Especially if they're really young, because they could get themselves or others into trouble. They'll usually get in peoples' business and start touching their stuff (not knowing any better of course).

BAD parenting is doing stuff like not caring where your child is, or nearly forgetting them in the store. I've seen it happen (rarely thankfully), and it's just sad. Most of the time though it's a parent of a really uncooperative child. They sort of have to be like a team, not everything is the parent's fault completely.

...I don't think I've ever seen a child on a leash here (in the UK). I have seen little kids run off into possibly dangerous situations mind.

Of course, all good parents let their children do the cleaning with the baby mop:

Today, I was at a baseball game, and I saw what looked like a 7 year old strapped to a dad's stomach ;_;2012-07-13 03:10:00

Many times I've seen parents inviting kids to have a try of some wine at fancy restaurants... but they don't tell the kid when to stop drinking.

The kid either spits it back into the wine glass or complains about the taste.

Oh, man. I've seen PLENTY of kids on leashes. Only 1 or 2 in Utah, but there are buttloads in Disneyland.

It's kinda sad. More for the parents than the kids, imo.

Kids with leashes? I had never heard from that. People are seriously that... braindead?
I've seen no one using that in Spain. But, most of the parents around me do not care about their childs. Half of the time they are annoying me and they don't even care!

Seems a little slack on the parents' behalf.. but it's not like the child stands there, mortified, their final shred of dignity torn away, they don't know what's going on, other than... "there seems to be some sort of mechanism preventing me from running onto the road, what kind of witchcraft is this!?" It's sort of like that cone collar dogs wear so they don't bite at their wounds... it's all for the greater good...! Still, surely better parenting can compensate for the leashes...2012-07-13 12:17:00

Would you rather have your child on a leash knowing they are safe, or have to chase your child and potentially lose them at a severely crowded place like Disneyland where everything is appealing to children? I don't think the parents want to have to put their child on a leash but it is for their protection and safety. How does that make them bad parents, caring for their children?

A leash!? What a brilliant idea!

The next logical step would be a muzzle...

Well I was bitten by a kid once so I'd say that is a brilliant idea.

Would it kill a parent to hold their own child's hand?

And I never said they were bad parents. A leash is effective, but it's sad that they don't use a better strategy to keep their kids under control. (ie. holding their hand ^).

Meh, whatevs I guess. They're their kids, not mine. :L

Do you know how easy it is for a child to wiggle their hand free? So unless you have a death grip on them... it doesn't help nearly as much as a leach.

Ungreth, have I got the deal for you! Would you be interested in an Elizabethan Collar for 25% off?

Look, all I'm saying is that I wouldn't want to raise my child like that. If you're fine with that, then that's your business. Not mine.

No, it's ok thanks. I use an electric cattle prod to control my kids.

Horrid parenting I've seen is a mom first sending the son on a plane to central russia alone. and making her son drink famous daves hot sauce then take a 60 minute cold shower :/ she ended up going to prison and her child going to an orphanage.

If he was on a plane without the mother how could she make him have hotsauce.... more importantly, why don't I fly on these planes with showers. :/

I'd like to know how many of you actually have kids? I've used the leash when mine were little. It was a little animal backpack (puppy dog, monkey) where the tail extended out to maybe three feet. I keep hearing, "hold their hand." Hold their hand? Yeah this works for a little bit. Then they start wiggling and pulling and wanting to be independent and wander. You can squeeze tighter and then they yell, "Ow! You're hurting me!" Then you really get the stares. I've used the "leash" when in a busy public places like at the airport, zoo or theme park. Then they can walk on their own and you don't have to worry about some perv snatching them up. The leash bad parenting? No. These are examples of bad parenting.

I read somewhere one time that in South America, I believe it was, that they would take young kids and tie their legs together and wrap them in burlap. Then lower the kid feet first down and snake hole and when the kid started screaming they'd pull them up with a big snake trying to swallow the legs. That's bad parenting. Leashes. Sheesh.

To the picture in the first post,

Cop: Why is this kid on a leash?
Mother:*nervous look* ugh
Mother:*surprised look* What the heck? I ordered a Labrador!

Anyway, I guess I can say its a bad idea. As soon as that baby walks away, you got a choking baby

Edit: Haven't you people heard if a stroller? Picking them up wouldn't kill you would it?

I read in the news that some family in China left their baby at home tied to the sink with a wrap of toilet paper for entertainment.2012-07-16 03:36:00

I guess that's right. A bit silly that parents are stuck between a rock and a hard place with an ordeal like that, and then contradicting each other.

I've seen a child on a leash several times before in the UK, and I've always thought it was bad parenting merely by how it looks, but Bio's sold me from his view.

Speaking from a Mom's point of view:
A harness comes in very handy sometimes.
Picture this, you are a new parent. You are sleep deprived. Toddlers can be extremely quick.
You're in the store and your child is screaming because you have them in the basket seat. You take them out and hold their hand. They are trying to wiggle free of your hand. At the same time you need to get something off the shelf, you release their hand for a second. You get your item, look down and their gone. Pure panic and fear set in. You find them behind you.
Using a harness doesn't seem so bad, at least you know your child isn't gone.
Unfortunately there will always be people who misuse things.
But imho if used properly, the harness was very handy and I'd much rather be criticized or embrassed then lose my child.
