New rating system

Archive: 11 posts

People who dont finish your level shouldn't be able to rate it. Tag it, yes. I make some pretty hardcore levels, not designed for ease and they are flawless. I spend ages de-bugging everything so it's just right. (Take a look for yourselves if you wish). I somehow end up with low ratings, yet when I check my scoreboards I find that only 6 people out of 70 finish my level and I have 6 hearts - do the math. If someone hearts/finishes an airtight level, they aren't going to rate it low. Rant over lol, I hope you undersand.

I disagree with the option of not allowing people to rate a level who have not finished it.

My platforming skills are not the best - I just killed the collector yesterday for the first time, and have had the game since launch. I do know a good level from a bad one, however, even if I am unable to finish it at the time.

Creators who take the time to polish a level, have a great story, art, lighting, polish, challenges being challenging but not cheap, impossible or superhuman... I'll generally have an idea of whether it's worth coming back a level or not by the time I leave, and that is not always when I finish it. So I think I have a fair idea of a decent "rating score".

To deny someone a chance to rate (or tag for that matter) a level they have not reached the scoreboard of is in my opinion not a good move. If people make an awful level with cheap death everywhere, full of bugs, poor design and no polish, I think I should have the right to give it a low score reguardless of whether I have finished it or not.

Sometimes as well, people don't finish levels not because they are too hard. Maybe there is a bug which prevents them from finishing. Maybe they got bored. Maybe they just plain old ran out of time. It's not just difficulty that makes a person not finish, and that does not mean that their opinion is not important.

I have the same problem. I have 4 published levels with4 or 5 stars, 3 of which are posted on this site, but If I want those continued high ratings, I usually have to dumb down my levels, or deal with folks giving 1 star and a "rubbish" tag just because they wouldn't put a little effort in figuring out that you have to jump a certain way to land it right, lol. My newest level is far better than my last 5 star one, and it got an average of 3 in 10 minutes after publishing it.
I think though, rather than not allowing peeps to rate these levels, there should be a 2 or 3 tiered rating system. Perhaps categories, including: difficulty, 1 to 5 stars, asthetics, 1 to 5 stars, etc. This way, a great level that was too hard for some would not necessarily fall to the "nobody ever plays my level because some jerk-face couldn't play it and rated it one star" category.

I would write more, but I have to go dumb down my latest level!

Difficulty isn't the only reason a player may be unable to appreciate a given level. Non-linear levels, or levels where by design a player only sees a fraction of it one play through, are also disadvantaged under the current system. As are levels that require a little bit of patience for the player to figure out where to go or what to do next. As are levels where the speech bubbles are important. You're gonna have impatient players who skip through all the text and miss critical information. You're also gonna have players who can't read the text in the first place because it's not in their native language. They can't give a fair rating even if they wanted to.

There's any number of reasons why quality levels can get a raw deal when players who couldn't appreciate them are forced to rate them. From what I've heard (someone correct me if I'm wrong), you can even get stuck with having to give a rating for a level you barely even got to see because you jumped into it near the end and became group leader after everyone left. What a terrible system.

Solution: Rating a level, just like giving a tag or posting a comment, should be optional. Such an easy change to implement yet MM won't do it. Why??

Wow, this one was brought back from the dead!

You guys have some nice discussion, but let's try to take a close look at when the last post was made before responding. Nobody has responding since January! I'm sure there has been a thread like this that was more recent. How did you happen across this one anyways?

Locked.
