Tank commander: A top down shooter (1-4 players)

Archive: 10 posts

Hey all, t'as been a long while since I visited the forum.....I'm back because I'd like to hear your views on my latest level
http://lbp.me/v/cn8hww

A tank top down shooter, as the name suggests: Battle your way through the map, fighting varied and numerous enemies, blowing up barrels for added damage, destroying buildings, collecting various and vareid power ups, and in general, creating carnage!

This level requires a bit of thought and tactics, it IS NOT just a button mashing fest There are no respawns (though health can be found) it is a wise tactic to think before you go driving in

I'm looking for any constructive criticisms and of course praise, and am willing to F4F anyone that takes the time to write more than a few bland sentences

Have fun all, I hope you enjoy, and looking forward to your feed back, Shade_seeker
(NOTE: With the risk of sounding an old miserable bugger...please PLEASE PLEASE, don't write 'looks good, got it qued' or 'Adding to que now'.....just que it, play it, and if you feel like reviewing it, review it....rant over!

This level is very beautifully crafted. A lot of effort must have gone into the details. The only issue I had with it is the controls. It's kind of difficult with the forward/backwards controls mapped to l2/r2, and trying to fire with l1 and r1, as well as steer and aim using both sticks. Pressing L3 to lock on helps alot though. An absolutely incredible level, worthy of anybody's attention.

If you haven't already, please check out my F4F level here: https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=72181-Laser-Chess-Deluxe-2-4-players ... If you don't have anybody to play with, just turn on a second controller and play against yourself to get a feel for it. I'm on frequently, and always up for a game.

Thanks brannayen for your play through and thoughts
The controls ARE a bit weird at first if you arent use to using two fingers for the L1 and L2 and the same on the right side...it's something you get use to, I did try other configurations, but both i and MANY testing buddies decided this was the best way. It's not a car, so it needs to handle more like a tank rather than a normal car racing game, i hope you go back to replay it to see if you can complete it

Thanks for adding it to the picks guys shame nobody has offered to return the f4fs I have done, but I very much appreciate the fact that it has been played by the people that matter on this site ....
Level two is getting there now...... Dead nation style, heaps and HEAPS of zombies in a city, just taking a while to work out how NOT to get all the exclamation marks on screen wen there are forty of them all coming at you at once !! Have given the tank self heal logic so no hunting around for spaners, and working in a story line, will post a new thread here when it's done

Thanks agin for the pick, it's a shame so many aren't actually playing the main level, or indeed giving it a smile, but I guess it's not everyone's cup of tea

Alright Shade!

Sorry, man. I've been on an LBP break. My levels take months to do so i get kind of sick of it lol.

Ok, loved the old school concept. It feels like a PS1 game to a degree, so it did offer some nostalgia which i enjoyed.

The voiced intro is a nice touch and lets us know how much effort was put into it. This was followed by a nice and easy playable tutorial that got me to grips with the level no problem.
Tank design is pretty good and functions well. HUD design is brilliant and easy to understand. Scenic design was also great to look at and old school in it's aesthetic.

Tank controls are a mixed bag. I find the movement of the tank to be clumsy. It feels too light (acceleration) and at the same time too heavy (deceleration). It comes to a sudden halt when letting go of the acceleration button. I think it should be slower and have a longer deceleration time. Also, controls can become fiddly and it can be tough to manoeuvre around the scenery.

I also didn't understand some of my power ups until after some time experimenting. As much as i liked the voiced pick-up indication, it can be hard to understand unless the TV is on loud.

The enemy design is great and i at times completely forgot this is LBP2, but i think some enemies and destructable scenery can take too long to kill. Humans can take multiple hits of rockets to kill lol and the same with simple boxes when attempting to destroy them. It's time consuming when there ought not be any, in my opinion.

The Armour repair pick ups is a great invention, much better than a simple pick-up. It allowed me to strategies.

I failed my mission after around 25mins of play and it was completely uncleer as to why, but the time i had playing was enjoyable. It reminded me of old classics and i had an idea when playing; You made other vehicles so well, why not have a moment controlling them? I know it goes against the title, but a helicopter game akin to this would be great! It would be like the classic Desert/Jungle/Urban Strike games.

A pretty good old school inspired level here. It's nothing serious, just a pick up and play level in the name of fun.

Well made Shade.

Very well done! I totally loved the on-screen commander! You did some very clever things here, I really like how the world rotates and not the tank, it really adds to the open-world feel of it all. Your vehicles are very well made, especially the helicopter. I felt it was a little over-powered, but cool nonetheless. The tutorial taught me everything I needed to know, so ya, I have no complaints at all lol. I will be showing this one to my friends for sure! I hope to see a second mission in the future (that I'm sure I'll fail at lol)

Please check out Geometry Wars Galaxies and let me know what you think!

I have a suggestion for the controlls: Make the gun turn with an analogue rotator instead of an advanced rotator.2012-07-29 18:54:00

Hi mate, thanks for the 'late' F4F, you managed to bump the thread and finally get some interest from people

Thanks for your positive thoughts, glad you liked it, and I have taken on board your suggestion about the 'deceleration' and 'lightness' I'm not sure how it will work, but I'll try it out next time I'm on

Thanks elliotnester steveni played it and gave it a smile, but no mm pick I'm afraid

Hey there turkyntz so glad you liked it..... Mission two is very much on its way..... But with a few twists: two tanks rather than one (obviously for the second player) set in an open world city scape......and the mission? Well, imagine dead nation but in a tank!! Got the logic and most o the playing area sorted now...40+ zombies on screen at once runs fine, less tactics, LOTS more gun ho shooting, tons more destructable scenery, and of course loads of runni g zombies over .... Add me if you Wana see more

Erm....
Analogue rotator? As in the more you move the stick over, the faster it rotates? I did that already, did you mean something else mate?

Thanks to all that posted here, sorry it took me a while to notice you had done so, the post has been dead since I posted it, so stopped checking it
