Ball and Wall/Alleyway/Bricker (or whatever you want to call it) Logic

Archive: 8 posts

You know.... the one where you move the bat at the bottom of the screen and bounce the ball into the bricks at the top?

I was thinking of creating a very basic version of this for my next level. Is there anything in particular I need to know. I'm sure I saw a tutorial thread for it a while back. Can't seem to find it... perhaps I'm just going doolally, but if anyone knows of said thead, could you direct me towards it?

just check out my tutorial sticky and look through that. Try the 'game design' section first and then check out the written tutorials2012-07-09 13:44:00

There was one in the videos section - for "Breakout" (which I think is the same game) but the youtube user has removed his channel. Shame. Can't really see anything in the written tutorials, at first glance.

I think it's just getting to ball to bounce how it should do - is there anything special that I need to do?

You could simply invert the x and y vectors when it hits a corresponding wall or object.

It you want the ball to behave accurately you would need to invert the cosine of the angle relative to whatever plane it hits. Maybe you could do that using some angle sensors and a joystick rotator or something.

darn it! that's just one of the reasons I stopped updating it so often. sorry about that.

Ah, now this is where you lost me.

I made something like this a while ago, but never finished it.. My ball could change angle depending on where it hit the paddle.
I didn't organise any of my logic back then, so it looks like a big mess. (Actually, looking at this, i'm surprised it even works )

The impact sensors on the left are different stuff the ball can hit. If the ball hits the top, the Y-direction will toggle, for example.

The green, the yellow and the red impact sensors are on different parts of the paddle, and all power microchips with only a battery in them at a certain percentage. If the ball hits one of the red impact sensors, which are on the side, for example, it will have a low percentage in the Y-direction and a high percentage in the X-direction. If the ball hits the green impact sensor, both batteries give an equal percentage, making it move at 45 degrees.

Like i said, it's probably not very clear in the image. You should just play around with it, as making stuff like this is a great way to learn about logic

Thanks, I will give that a go!

I played that Pong Reloaded again last night to gain the pong arcade prize he gives away. It's the same basic principle. It's a shame he isn't around nowadays to ask about the logic for his main game.
