http://lbp.me/v/cpmx0s Laser Chess is now for 2-4 players! Grab your friends for an all out battle on a 12 x 12 laser chess arena. Many improvements have been made over the original. If it's your first time playing, do yourself a favor and watch the instructional video at the beginning. Thank you to my fellow Ghost Creators for input and help with playtesting. Music by Velvet-Audio and myself. Please report any bugs here. I will post pics ASAP. http://lbp.me/v/cpmx0s | 2012-07-08 03:33:00 Author: Brannayen Posts: 438 |
What a great concept buddy. Had the priveledge to play this the other day with my 3 other counterparts(you know who you are) and I have to say that was a blast. Even though I suck, I'll have my day: revenge is sweet. Enough of my ranting, the gameplay was smooth with variable ways to play. I've never encountered a chess where you can kill them with lasers before, so this was obviously new and exciting at the same time. I can't imagine the logic that went into this. Great job | 2012-07-08 17:40:00 Author: tripple_sss Posts: 250 |
Hey Brannayen! Thanks for the review of my level. I have this all queued up and ready to go. I am just waiting for my brother to come over so we can play this together. Feedback coming soon, I promise! | 2012-07-09 01:31:00 Author: VelcroJonze Posts: 1305 |
This was very fun level to play with 4 players, loved it alot. Makes you have to think alot when playing with alot of people cause one wrong move can hurt you lol. Definitely recommend this to everyone to play it really fun. | 2012-07-09 03:45:00 Author: Sabre_ Posts: 653 |
Brannayen.. This. Level. Is. So. Awesome! .. And I was one of the 3 players that played with tripple_sss .. (3 comments up) .. And I am SO happy to say, I KICKED THEIR LITTLE SACK BOTTOMS > OHH YAAA ... Okay, back to the level.. This level is SO much fun to play. I think this is the very first level in LBP history that allows you to shoot a laser, bounce it off of 10 mirrors, and kill your opponent behind you. IT'S INSANE. If I do recall correctly, I pulled something like this off during my match with tripple_sss and others. Here is how it went. I was the last one to have a laser, because everyone else lost theirs by either it being destroyed by another laser, or it being captured. What I did was line my laser up so that it bounced off of my 2 mirrors, ACROSS the board and off of tripple_sss' mirrors, BACK to my mirror, off my mirror, and off to the right where it bounced off someone elses mirrors, and across the board AGAIN, destroying someones mirror ... I'm impressed if you followed that.. If you don't understand, grab 3 friends and go play this level, then you will understand. | 2012-07-09 03:50:00 Author: Wolffy123 Posts: 406 |
Hi Brannayen.. First off, thank you for your kind words on my 'tank commander (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=72239-Tank-commander-A-top-down-shooter-(1-4-players))' level This was a real nice level, GREAT music, yours? Very nice idea, is this an original idea? I certainly havent seen anything like this b4, a real nice twist to chess I few ideas: I wonder if others had the same trouble as me, pressing r1 to fire? I would have liked to have seen a little more 'passaz' when the lazers bounce off the mirrors, perhaps sticker material with the lense flare sticker? And the exploding pieces was, well, a little bit of a let down....your show piece is the lazers, its all about the lazers, i'd realy like to see a little more effort in making them look like lazers GREAT idea, all worked well, sound logic, nice simple tutorial, just needs a bit of 'flare' to make them lazers lazer ! Great job | 2012-07-09 22:20:00 Author: Shade_seeker Posts: 328 |
Alright, I will give this a go. ...To be clear, I don't dislike you. I'd criticize my friend the same way if he made something of laser chess' original caliber. In any event, looking forward to what changes you've made. | 2012-07-09 23:02:00 Author: SLS10 Posts: 1129 |
Ok how in the world can you play chess with 4 people? I will try that out . | 2012-07-09 23:07:00 Author: dutch Posts: 54 |
I have considered, and am in the process of making better looking lasers. It occurred to me, watching my kids play it, that it can be difficult to tell which way it's pointing. Look for this to update soon. This is not an original idea, I played this game a long time ago, on a computer much more antiquated than what's available today (Apple IIe). It's also available as a board game. R2 is to fire, not R1. @SLS10 ....ah, we meet again. I updated the cursor movement logic, as well as the laser logic, greatly reducing thermo and lag. I've played the current publish online with 3 other people, nobody noticed any undue lag. I reduced the size of the entrance room to a functional size. It does the job, without the long run to the other side. Yes, you will notice many aspects from the original (music, and such). I did retrofit the new cursor movement logic to the original laser chess level. It also detects when someone leaves in the middle of a game, removing their pieces so the remaining players can keep on playing. And, just so we're clear, I don't dislike you either. Yes, I do like positive encouragement, but constructive criticism leads to improvements. I've looked into that "move preview" feature you suggested, but as good as I am at logic, I've struggled to come up with a way to make it work smoothly. | 2012-07-09 23:40:00 Author: Brannayen Posts: 438 |
Okay, just played it with two friends. I think the gameplay would benefit greatly if you reduced the size of the board, reduced the number of pieces one has, and increase how far the pieces themselves can move. The concept is still great, and I've liked the changes I've seen since I've played the original. Well done. | 2012-07-10 01:17:00 Author: SLS10 Posts: 1129 |
It has now been updated with new laser pieces. They're a bit more stylish, and it's easier to tell which way they're facing. More updates to follow, but going to bed for now | 2012-07-10 03:59:00 Author: Brannayen Posts: 438 |
Very original twist on a classic game. This was a great game you made. I finally got to play this with my brother and we both had a good time battling it out. Sorry I don't have alot to say about it, I don't understand the logic that would go into making something like this. I am into platforming levels, and I don't normally play these type, but I am glad I did. It's good to expand my horizons every so often. Great job! | 2012-07-12 21:44:00 Author: VelcroJonze Posts: 1305 |
You are very good at logic. Just thinking about the microchips, gates, and wires that went into this hurts my head. Took a little bit to figure out how to play even when I watched the instructions. I first thought that all the pieces shot lasers, but figured out that each piece plays a different role. Once I got the hang of it, I had really fun. I only played 2 players, but I can imagine 4 player would be very chaotic and fun. | 2012-07-16 05:49:00 Author: Greensmurfy Posts: 300 |
Yes, a good 4 player game can be quite chaotic, but is loads of fun. It can also sometime last 45 min to an hour, depending on the skill level of all the layers. A few bugs have been found recently, and fixed. One was found by a random "dive in" player. Somehow, he managed to get on top of the part that you grab to choose your color, and the controllinator didn't grab him to put him in his seat. I'm still looking at a few things for improvements. One suggestion, which I'm going to try out (as soon as I have the ambition to update almost EVERY single piece) is lens flare where the lasers bounce off the mirrors. | 2012-07-17 00:05:00 Author: Brannayen Posts: 438 |
I loved the game, especially after I kicked some... as i was saying, I loved it. It was fun to sit there and think about my next move to get to my opponents king. It was original and I can only imagine how many wires are running through your screen in creative mode. My only small complaint was the tutorial. To me it wasn't clear enough and sometimes the text bubbles would disappear before I finished reading them, I had to go through the tutorial several times before I got it but in the end I finally understood it. Great work. | 2012-07-18 19:16:00 Author: Unknown User |
To all those that think there are 2387482374923874 wires in his create mode level, there is none in sight.. It's kind of amazing. Almost the entire logic of the level is wireless... That's when all of the microchips are closed, of course. When you open them up then you have a massive headache that lasts for days.. I slept cuddling a bottle of tylonol | 2012-07-19 03:43:00 Author: Wolffy123 Posts: 406 |
The only wire headache I had is when I first designed the cursor movement logic for the first version of the level. It used 2 8 port selector switches, 64 AND gates, and 64 followers, with a unique tag on each square. When I tried using that for the 12 x 12 board, I decided I needed to try something else. Once I got it working on that board, I retro-fitted the logic into the original level. The original level uses a permanent "laser grid" that lights up each segment as needed. Again, I tried to use the same logic for the 4 player version, but it quickly filled the thermo, making it useless. I had to redesign it to emit laser segments as needed, that go away when the shot is done. | 2012-07-19 04:19:00 Author: Brannayen Posts: 438 |
Just got done playing your Laser Chess. I like it alot. Very solid gameplay and I really liked the twist you put on the game of chess. Very smart and the visuals looked very nice as well. Keep up the great work. Can't wait to see what's next. Very nice work! | 2012-07-19 23:34:00 Author: Unknown User |
I played this level with a friend and it is a really inventive chess game. The laser reflections worked well, and the rules are much easier to understand during the tutorial. I easily beat my friend by destroying a king with a laser. Very clever game. VISUALS: 4.5/5 SOUND: 5/5 GAMEPLAY: 5/5 OVERALL: A yay and heart | 2012-07-20 02:22:00 Author: JustinArt Posts: 1314 |
Sorry it took so long for me to get back at ya. The idea of this is awesome. The perks with the mirrors and beam splitters is unheard of in chess, it gives more of a challenge. It would be awesome if you could figure out an AI system lone people can enjoy it as well. The level is awesome, Keep it up! | 2012-07-20 15:25:00 Author: curtislarkin Posts: 157 |
Thank you everyone for the feedback so far. I'm still looking for ways to improve this level (without affecting gameplay) Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated. | 2012-07-22 22:36:00 Author: Brannayen Posts: 438 |
Awesome level. However, the mirrors that reflect the laser directly back seem to always destroy the laser gun that shot at it. That's probably what should normally happen, but when the beam is split and then hits one of those without being redirected to the gun, the gun shouldn't be destroyed (at least I would think...). Not sure if it was a random bug, but seemed like this always happened. Definitely great level though. | 2012-07-27 14:23:00 Author: Unknown User |
Actually, that's the way it's supposed to work. That particular feature was modeled after the laser chess I used to play. The pieces with straight mirrors are defensive pieces; if your laser hits it, it's destroyed. | 2012-07-28 00:22:00 Author: Brannayen Posts: 438 |
