Cool Projects

Archive: 25 posts

In the Meet The Staff thread, the discussion turned to things that rhyme with ARR PEE- I mean, Cool Projects that people here could work on. Things like the Contest Crew, which was started by normal users like YOU in order to do stuff. Anyway, I thought I could make a thread where people could say any Cool Projects that come to mind that they think could be officially supported for the Good of our glorious empire of LBPC. All hail warlord Evil! ... ****, I hate this brainwashing...

Anyway, the only idea for a "Cool Project" I had is an Arr Pee Gee. However, I fail to see how that benefits this forum in any way. So, uh, yeah. Anyone have any ideas on how to galvanize the collective might of this mighty forum in order to build up out empire and rain destruction upon our enemies?

As far as I 100% admire this thread and love what you're trying to do...
You remember when we started the Contest Crew: "What's being said in Vegas, stays in Vegas"

I really fear the effects of expectations and overhype in the LBP community.
I have ideas, I already passed one of it to a notable member to think about it...

At the same point I'm a strong believer that lts of people here have lots of talents and skills, they want to show what they can do and be active in the community spreading love and sharing what they can.

More people doing things means less bitterness.

We, as a whole community have strong legs and we must not wait MM to do nice things for us, because we can amaze them more than they can amaze us.

Anyway, it sucks to see that other forums are way more active with ideas.

I have a cool idea. We need more staff. At any point in time when I log on, there should be at least one blue name down below. Like right now, there are 275 people on the site and zero mods. Now the mods we have do a great job, so I'm not complaining on anything there. We just need a few more "NEW" faces as staff members. Someone like Omega for one. He's been here a long time, knows what he's doing and usually has a cool head in solving situations that I have seen. So I vote Omegaslayer for Mod. I think I'll make a promotional signature. Hmm.
I agree that we need to do something in order to reinvigorate this site. It's growing stagnate, I can feel it. We shouldn't be sitting on our hands going, "oh well you see, LBPV will be releasing soon and so will LBPKarting, so that will liven up the place." I say why wait? Let's do something now! Let's get this place to jumping. We need something new and fresh. We need contest in between major crown contest, whether they are costume contest, or pod contest or even a Play contest where the winners can receive site pins rather than crowns. We need something.

More staff as in more moderators? Maybe, but I don't think more mods is the way to get people active in the forums again. Something people here have to do.

I don't think me since I haven't played LBP in over a year now... I just am too entrenched to leave now :/ But for people who do still play LBP, well, you can't just rely on the staff methinks, which was a major part of the Contest Crew. Something here has got to change. I dunno what, since I just live in the sewers around here now, but more involvement from everyone would be cool. Maybe. I don't really know to be honest haha. Kinda wish there was a PS3Central... /cough Nah, I know, I know

Staff is responsible for keeping a place running. How do you get people active in the forums if you don't do anything? As a customer visiting a retail establishment, it's not my duty to get more people in the door and actively buying product. It's the owners and staff duty to bring people in, to keep the place lively. What's the incentive for people to stay active here? Running more contest is something done by staff, not regular members. That's why I mentioned it. Right now we only have the Crown contest and have to space those out. We can still run Site Pin contest in between those big contest. It doesn't have to be site pins either. It could be PSN card vouchers or Plushy dolls or something.2012-07-07 23:26:00

Guests should not be factored in to that.

Another pondering ponderance of mine. I just noticed that LBPC has a twitter account. It hasn't been used since Jul of '09 https://twitter.com/LBPCentral What a waste of a valuable tool. Can use it to promote the site, contests, thread discussions, LBP news or just join in on community conversations. This would be a cool "project" to do. Bring the twitter back to life. Give me the password, I'll keep it up.2012-07-08 03:41:00

hm...I can tell you this...
In the last year I helped run the Contest Crew, I tried to gap the bridge with the Japanese Community helping with some logistic stuff the LiBitsmate project and I can tell you that doing it as a member is HELL.
Because it's not only the amount of work you do, but also going through the write the mod/admin, wait reply, stupid problem arises (like lack of a logo), write again, wait reply, mod is out for week-end, stuff releases almost a week later than expected.
In the meanwhile, "YOU", as a "representative" of the project have to do somersault backflips with the users to keep them calm, since they have been waiting.
Factor in that I have an incredibly good relation with Aya, and CC trust so things were a loooooooooot easier for me than for the average "sackjoe"
One of the easiest things to do, in my opinion is starting a private area for some kind of a elder council, made up of people that helped Central over time, like old spotlighters.
People that gave sweat for Central.

The projects...I believe every new project needs a good mixture of old and new blood...

Guests should not be factored in to that.

Yes and no.
There's an incredible amount of users that log in invisible and are counted as guests.
Jwwphotos for example...

That would be really nice, Hubbie account works beast, and all the other fansites have a twitter account to keep people updated.
As the Contest Crew account worked.
It's incredible that we had to make 2 other accounts while an official one already existed.

IF the users wants I accept to be a mod.
I'm here a lot of time, so it's ok for me.
People PMs me to solve problems already anyway

Some very excellent ideas so far!

@Rock...since you started this thread, could you please edit your 1st post with a numbered list of all the ideas so far. That will keep things organized here...and will feed a part of the RPG passion that flows through your veins.

1. We are only as good as our foundation. That is to say we need to nurture the Community. We can do this by making every member feel special. One way to do this is replying to new member's Intro threads. I have not been the best at this, due to career constraints on my time, but I will commit to at least 5 replies per week. I remember how welcomed I felt when I first Joined, and I could not wait to take part. Maybe some of us responding in this thread could rededicate ourselves to this cause. A welcoming committee would also help keep the fire lit.

2. We could also have a weekly community member roast, where each week a member who has been here for more than 6 months will be picked at random. The member would be told they had been selected, and asked if they approve. If yes, we have them create the thread in a new Community Roast Forum, so they can receive all the thanks.

I will add more later.

Yeah, I would love to have a member roasted every week.
Ungreth is a cannibal, he would so approve it

Well I don't know if I speak for everyone, but I'm willing to sweat for LBPC. I speak as a member, you see normal members don't have much they can do around the site, we need something to do during the down time of contest. We need something that makes members want to come back everyday for something new and exciting.2012-07-09 22:37:00

LittleBigNetwork seems to be getting a lot more traffic, they all seem to say the same thing, that Network is better. Why is this? What exactly is it that LBN has that LBPC doesn't? LBPC should look into that if they want to increase traffic and get this site back ontop.

Oh...wait you wanted me to give you all ideas? Yeah I gots nothing. Maybe another community meetup? Preferably on the east coast?

Oh another thing we could try is requiring players to leave reviews for at least 2 levels before posting their creations in the level showcase. LittleBigNetwork does this which helps to minimize people from just spamming the site with their levels for plays and bumping people down who are looking for useful feedback.

I haven't heard anyone say LBN is better, and besides they are all equally amazing. However, I use LBPC because I personally like it better.

Thanks for posting this thread RockSauron - I think this will spark a lot of great ideas (and hopefully projects).

I very much agree with many of the other thoughts in this thread as well - more special contests/events/activities/etc are always a good idea, and this site would certainly benefit from that. Let's get out there and make something happen!

I am always happy to help you guys in any way that I can, so please contact me anytime. Please do consider me a resource that is at your disposal - that's what I'm here for.

My one piece of advice in all this (and most of you seem quite aware of this point already) is that only the community knows what the community wants. Don't rely on the site staff to come up with all the ideas. The best way to handle this sort of thing is just to take the initiative, get things organized, and ask for site staff involvement/endorsement along the way. Don't forget you can also create your own groups for discussions and brainstorming - they're great as makeshift private forums. The Planetarium is a great example of a site with a fun and active community that is constantly coming up with new things for people to do. The site staff drives some things, but it's the community at large that starts most of it. No reason that can't happen here as well.

At any point in time when I log on, there should be at least one blue name down below. Like right now, there are 275 people on the site and zero mods. Now the mods we have do a great job, so I'm not complaining on anything there.Hey bio! This is a great point and something I always used to wonder about as well. It's definitely good to have a mod around at all times, which is part of the reason I'm so happy to officially be on the staff.

I pretty much live on LBPC 24/7 - I am pretty much always around. I have a dedicated email address (and have for a few years now) that does nothing but handle forum and thread subscriptions, so even when my name doesn't show up on the bottom of the screen I am still probably reading stuff via email on my iPhone. Also, my work computer is set up to automatically clear website credentials whenever my browser window is closed, so I do spend quite a bit of time browsing the forums as a guest.

I want you guys (and gals) to know that I am available for you anytime you need. Shoot me a PM and I will get an email notification, so that's always a good way to get in touch. If you need me here immediately your best bet is Twitter - shoot me a mention or a DM @tross13 and I will come running.

So let's serious about this and put some plans in motion guys. It's not enough to just talk about it, we have to actually do it. 2012-07-10 00:08:00

We did exactly this in the PSP community back in 2010. We wanted contests, level picks, creator spotlights, community projects... so we got out there and did it ourselves. We received the backing of the site staff and they were hugely helpful, and we made a lot of great things happen. Let's do that again.

Thanks for starting this thread up Rock. There's a lot of good ideas being tossed around here. I might not be completely an expert on LBPC, but it seems like motivation can definitely come through events. Contests like the official LBPC ones are great ways to spark up competition, although I know it hasn't been able to follow the same consistent monthly pattern as it used to. (I believe this has something to do with shortage of crown codes, correct me if I'm wrong on that though)

Nonetheless, I believe that having other forms of competition would totally work. Over a year ago I actually held a contest of sorts called "The Project Poster Contest", which was basically what it sounded like, create a poster for a project you're working on in LBP. It got way more entries than I expected, despite the prizes being nothing but bunches of worthless XP. Not that this approach would always work, I guess people were really just digging the idea. That could've been because, well, you didn't see many "poster contests". I think it'd be great to see what else could be done, alongside level competitions.

A thread to toss around ideas or an actual contest thread? Because I'll need help if I'm going to be starting a contest.

Hehe well I won't name names, but I have heard it said a few times. I agree though, I personally go to LBPC a lot more. LittleBigNetwork seems way to...elite for my type. I get this wierd feeling that only the BEST of the BEST are allowed to go there. lol
