HELP boss creation

Archive: 9 posts

Heey everyone.
Have been away for quite some time now but I'm back with a question.

I'm still working on my first level but I think it's comming together quite nice. In the current state I think it deserves about a 4 star rating.

I just have one problem and that is the ending. I wan't to create an awesome boss. The problem is I have no clue how to start. I have only had one idea and that is to make a trolly with a set of magnetic keys ride through a specific path setting of some specific magnetic key switches. In this way I could have my monster or whatever (have not decided what to fight yet) do a lot of different things.

Does anyone else have some good ideas they would like to share because I find it really hard to start.

EDIT:
It would also be really helpfull if someone would tell me a few things about how they made their boss fight. so more the technique behind it then the the layout and what the player sees.

It was orriginally a graveyard theme. So dark and skeletons and stuff, but in the end I putt in some funny skelletons with funny ears and mustaches and stuff like that but I could still change that.2009-01-08 06:52:00

Have a Reaper at the end, and his weapon a scythe. Or a Mummy.2009-01-08 14:49:00

Well, I'm thinking a skeleton, with gas (deadly) surrounding him. Make it green so it looks like a poisonous aura.

First start off drawing it out. You should seperate the body parts and then at the end attatch them together. That's when you should add a thin layer of material onto it and change it into gas. You may want to move it about with pistons and such so that they have to get onto his head and hit the brain.

You could always change some of my ideas to fit your level but I think that this is an okayish idea.

thanks everyone but I still don't really know how to start. Maybe I'l just first build it so that it looks nice and later implement gameplay features. Maybe I'll get some good ideas then. Because it is in the doing that the idea comes.2009-01-08 16:22:00

Make a sketch of it and draw the moveable parts ( pistons , wobble bolts etc ) on it.

Make a list of actions you want him to make. Then separate the actions in movements needed to perform this action.

For example

stabbing the ground with a knife
Action needed , activate wobble bolt then activate piston.

then make an automation mechanical device that will set the actions needed in the order needed ( i often use a piston with magnetic switches on it. put that out of view ) so the automation mechanical device can start moving and activate the wobble bolt then the piston .

if you really want to have a very complicated boss i recomend you use the " grafcet " system google that.
HMmm i just realised the grafcet system is the french term... go to youtbe and search grafcet you will see what its about. Its a way of simplifyiing complex automation sequences so its very visual and easy to organise.

I've never designed anything overly complicated like a boss as of yet, but I guess a way to do it would be to just jot down a flow chart. Since the switchs are all mainly binary (minus the 3 way) it shouldn't be to hard to do it this way.
Also to time certain things I suppose you could create a hidden piston with a magnetic key on the end that takes as much time to reach the end of its length as there is boss "abilities". As the piston moves one direction it triggers all the the abilities in sequence (could be a move arm, emitting a bomb etc...) I guess the only flaw with this design is that on the pistons way back you would have a mirroring of the abilities.
Just thought of another idea while typing to stop the mirroing. Make a wheel with keys round the edge that turns as fast as you like. That way the boss abilities will cycle. If you want to get a little more complex i guess you could attach the keys to dissolve material and then on the wheel, so as the fight progress they fall off and the boss no longer has that ability?
Again none of this is tested, I'm just throwing a few ideas around as in the level I'm making now I hope to have some pretty epic boss fights.

Thanks everyone for the help. I know this reaction comes a bit late but I just wanted to say, IT'S FINALLY FINISHED! I just need to get it through some final playtests and once that's done I'll publish it for everyone to play. The level is called "R.I.P. again" so search for that in a week or so or add me as a friend now and I'll give you the key so you can playtest.

Thanks
