Dr Spongehead's How to make Magic Mouths work in different ways

Archive: 4 posts

I've finally finished off the 3rd in my "How to" series. This one deals with the topic of magic mouths, and some of the many different and interesting ways you can use them. There might even be some methods you have not even thought of!

As always, this level features Dr. Spongehead giving helpful advice on the topic, going in great detail about the ins and outs of the subject matter. There is also some slap stick and witty banter in there as well to make things interesting.

I did use Marazs Talking Tool by Maraz_Matari at one point, to demonstrate cut scenes. It's mentioned in the level, but here is another reference as well.

In general though I find that tool sometimes bugs out on me. I still haven't got all the kinks out of the time I am using it in this level, but it does show what it needs to show. I hope to get those final kinks out soon. I've also shown how I normally set up magic mouths without the tool, I call it the 8 mouth system and it's demonstrated on the level.

If the tool keeps bugging out on me I might scrap it and just use the 8 mouth system instead. I'll have to see.

This level is part of a larger series, which I call the "How to" series. The aim of the series is to show some of the advanced tricks that level designers use to do some fancy stuff. I don't just show it quickly though and then throw in a poor hand out, and I try and pull apart the ideas of why a thing does what it does so people can not only see the concept but the theory behind it as well, so it can be applied in a broader sense.

Although there is no set order to the series, this one does expand from ideas presented in the previous 2, How to make a monster give out more points, and how to make a permanent switch.

The link for the project thread is here (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=5934).

If you have any feedback or comments for this level, feel free to let me know! And don't be afraid to check out the others in this "How to" series as well!

For any new creators, or people who want to learn some of the finer tricks in the game, I recommend you check out Elbee's How To series. He explains things extremely well. I've personally gained a lot from his previous work and the knowledge that you gain from his levels expands into new ideas of your own.

I personally haven't checked this out yet Elbee, but will do so asap! Loved your previous two

Great level Elbee. Certainly very informative for new creators. Curious why you didn't show anyone how they can be used to cut to areas that are completely off screen or very far away?2009-01-08 03:50:00

Hmmmm... well, you can indeed make magic mouths shift the camera significantly. There are a few reasons why I haven't done this though...

Firstly, if I keep with the build of the level set up I have, there is not a lot of room to move the camera a long distance. I guess I could make some secret bonus area... hmmmm... maybe I could move the Miraz tool sequence to a different room, that's one of the strengths of the system he has...

Secondly, there is a physical limit to how far you can move the camera. If you go too far, either it won't fire at all or else will cut out early. It's not the most reliable of things to do, and people might think it can do more than is practicle...

The other problem is that it did not occur to me. I tried to kind of show this in the "cut scene" room, but the effect is not obvious as the mouths that are being fired are invisible.

I'm seriously considering scrapping the whole Miraz tool toom and just use an 8 mouth system to do the same effect but in a far more reliable fashion. It will just take a bit more time to write and tweak to do that.

But I could add with the switch room a remote mouth thing... I'll have to think though how to best incorporate it. Thank you though for the suggestion!
