Neon Fallout

Archive: 4 posts

May latest 'full level' is now online. In the past, Ive learned many lessons about my other full levels, from Warzone I learned how to increase the levels and difficulty, from the unreleased Rockpool difficulty, and City Of Gods atmosphere. I've combined these lessons and infact level concepts to create what I hope you find to be a satisfying level.

The situation is that you find yourself coming out of a 'Bunker' to awake in a city swarming in Neon radiation, which means there is neon everywhere. You venture from the bottom of a large crack in the earth through a quarry, railway and eventually a town, complete with dangerously derelict houses.

Theres prizes to be won (if you can find them!) ranging from the easily-obvious to the more hidden. You can win a mine-cart lift that works both ways, a Train station that serves its purpose if you put rails there, House ruins with a shootable brain (requires a jump of some sort and a paintinator powerup) and a mansion where parts break before your eyes (also requires paintinator) ; it was supposed to all collapse but due to technical conundrums parts just do. It must be noted that the MGS pack must be bought to use these items, im sorry about this but I wanted to use the paintinator. Ill try to work on a MGS-stuff-free version but for now heres your lot.

Note: Ill try and respond on the F4F thing but I have mocks coming up so dont expect a reply too soon. I may some spare time, but you all know how insistant teachers are on revision.

So thats my level! I'll try and add screens sometime but due to the problem listed above I may not for sometime. I hope you can check it out, and most importantly, give constructive feedback. This way I can improve my next level further!

I tried your level, but I was not able to jump to the second checkpoint. You should make that jump a bit easier because I lost all my 4 lives right at the start. I will retry it later if you fix this.

It is possible. A tip would be to jump to the front plane and time it.2009-01-08 16:35:00

*Ok, you have good ideas and a solid premise, but you really need to work on the execution. The scenery looks good and, if everything works properly, the obstacles are very nice. I tried several times but I kept getting stuck.

*The biggest problem I had was that I would often move something so that it was impossible to progress. It was most obvious in the cart section, where you moved a cart too far and then die, it would be impossible to move forward. You need to find a way to do what I call, "idiot proofing." This isn't to imply that the people who get into these situations are idiots, just that they might not do what you intended for the level. That is, make sure that there is always a way to move forward. For moving vehicle sections, I find that it is easiest to do this with emitters that emit new vehicles near the respawns while destroying the old ones (by setting a max emitted at one time limit). Now, it's better if you can emit the vehicle in a place where it can't be seen "appearing from nowhere" (like in a covered housing) and then having it roll to the desired position. This might be difficult to pull off in your level now, having been mostly finished, but keep it in mind for future levels. This "idiot proofing" goes for non-vehicle sections too; just make sure that it's not possible to get stuck. Play test the level a great deal to look for these situations (I certainly did on mine) and ask others to help if you need a second opinion. It seems like there are plenty of friendly and helpful people on these forums who wouldn't mind lending a hand.

*I found the carts to be very tipsy; they would constantly fall over and get stuck. You basically have to stand square in the middle to keep them from tipping. I would recommend making a lower, wider cart that is harder to tip (or just widen the wheel base on the existing ones).

*I think some of your platforms fell over (which is why I couldn't finish). The highest one after the mansion ruins fell away from the mansion. Did you bolt it? Try using dark matter behind the scenes (not visible) to keep things from falling out of place.

*For the part where you "make a bridge" with the quarry rocks, I would take out most of the smaller rocks and put more big ones in. I feel like the little ones don't do any thing and just get in the way.

Solid concepts, and I think that if you make some of the changes above, it could be a very nice level . I'll try it again after you make some changes, so let me know when it's ready. I'm eager to see the end!
