How far have you come?

Archive: 14 posts

Nothing like grabbin' a friend, jumping on LBP1 and nostalging on the good times you had!

When I look back on my levels, I feel ashamed of them! Just awful! Uneven lines, terrible color scheme, barely functional, buggy...

But when I think about it, I remember how difficult it was to make something even half good on lbp1. Hell, even just making it functional at all took some effort. And it's not like I had 2 years of LBP experience when I started playing. This was like nothing I'd ever seen! Completely new, unexplored.

It got me thinking...it took some real skill and dedication to make something that would take nada in LBP2. The people who made something "bad" by LBP2 standard were gods!

Now that it's so easy...I wonder if I've gotten better as a creator...or I've just been spoiled with new tools...

So...

Topic Question: Do you think you've gotten "better" as a creator throughout your LBP journey?

Have you put more effort and time into your LBP2 levels than your LBP1?

1) Undoubtedly. I've learned to use logic better and more efficiently, as well as putting more effort into presentation etc. I've improved with each level I've made. My first one being a bit of a mess, looks like it has been made by a child. Should my next level go to plan, I think it'll better than my last one, so hopefully I'll keep improving.

2) Errrm... yes..... a LOT. I didn't do any proper creating in LBP1. LBP2 is just so much more accessible for a noob like me.

I've come pretty far I guess. Back when I started, my ego was HUGE, I thought my levels actually looked decent. But now that I look back...they're garbage. At least they were kinda fun, but that's only because I looked at tutorials before I even had the game. The only super old levels I have now (I think) are my second one, "Little Big Mission", and my third one, "Haunted House Search", which is actually still up. Although, I don't feel ashamed really. I feel like I've gotten a bit better and that I can still improve. How I am now is definitely not the best I can get.

About how much time and effort I spend, I have a problem with that. I tend to rush sometimes. I keep telling myself to take it slow to make it good and to keep rearranging, but I just can't sometimes. There are those levels where I had pushed myself to complete, and actually have turned out really nice, but not recently. Maybe it's just one of those things that will improve with me in time.

I remember being so amazed by that god of war "demon Skull" level but could not achieve anything close at the time. I still have my first level from the beta of lbp1, problems abound. With every level I have released through the years I feel that I have improved greatly since the beginning.

I could not have dreamed that I would be creating what I'm creating now. I still have a lot to learn. Now it feels like I can create anything I choose to, it is a strange feeling to have the world of lbp at your finger tips in terms of creating.

I feel that I am putting far more effort now in creating than I used too though, probably becuase I do not get discouraged as easily as before. The only thing that bothers me now is the lbp2 glitches that are not my job to fix "rendering bug"

Back then, I was about party levels (like most noobs are), but the later I build, the smarter I get, also the more serious. I made a level in LBP2 called "Adventure Caverns", and it's some level a noob can make. I didn't know how to work out on most logic, but now I do. I'm now about platformers and games.2012-07-02 15:34:00

The very best LBP1 levels look like trash compared to almost anything in LBP2. It is a lot easier to create in LBP2 than LBP1, in my opinion. Not only does LBP2 have infinite more possibilities than LBP1, but it also has a bunch of new features that really help you with creating. An example is the hide feature. When I was creating in LBP1, I had to take apart entire parts of my level to work on a small thing and put the whole thing back together again. The hide feature probably would have saved me days of work.
I was actually a bit of a noob in LBP1, to be honest. My best LBP1 level was "LBP Shooting Gallery", a level where you controlled a spaceship and shot lasers at evil aliens (actually, it was a bit of material shooting bits of material onto other bits of material, but you used your IMAGINATION). All my other levels were noob levels or joke levels. It wasn't until LBP2 where I found my niche-movies. Sure, you can make them in LBP1, but the sequencer and the movie cameras (as well as sackbots) revolutionized everything. I mostly create movies now; I may dabble in something else (like SackDroid) but I will make mostly movies.

As someone working on both a LBP1 and a couple of LBP2 levels, I'd say the effort I put in is pretty even, but my LBP2 levels are definitely shaping up to be the better ones.

My old stuff is terrible, but I remember how proud I was of them at the time. Since then I remade them and like to think I've built up to being a solid-midrange creator, depending on the scale you use.
We'll see if I still think that six months after I finish my LBP2 debut, depending on whether or not it holds up.

I never really got to make something in LBP1.. when I first started to actually enjoy creating, there were only a few days until LBP2 release, so I got LBP2 on release and then started to create, so I'd say that 99% of my experience is from LBP2
But I've defiantly got waay better since I started, my first level ''Suicide Solution'' is pretty buggy and have a horrible design / material combinations xD
Now, my newest level ''...And down it Goes'' is Mm Picked
I would say that my experience is 40% Logic and 60% Design.. I've never made a actual Story, character or mini game, only platformers with 50/50 focus on Gameplay and Design

I'm still as I started out at as. I'm a man of costumes. I've gotten moderate notice, I started out on LBP1 as publishing a Metal Sonic level that wound up getting 1000 plays. I look at everything I have on my earth and wonder; what was I thinking? This logic should be better... this object should be shaded.... So on and so forth.

Basic summary: I've come a long way for an amateur creator.

My levels have gotten "worse" over time in terms of what the player sees, and more cluttered and logic-intense on the back end! Uh oh!2012-07-03 09:39:00
