40gb PS3 problem

Archive: 12 posts

Well I have a 40gb PS3 which I got a few years back. A while ago I had this same problem, only this time its worse.
In the system settings area of the PS3, it says I have 18gb out of 37gb free(its bad enough I paid for 40 and got 37). All I have is netflix, and one save file(2 for a few) for about 14 games. Then theres a bunch of DLC in its respective section. And I did delete PS home. I also have one game downloaded, borderlands, which is just above 3300mbs. I deleted all my other games, along with most of my save files, to make way for a 12 gb game that I am trying to download. Despite that I had 14bg free, this game said I didnt have enough space. So I freed up another 4, and it still wont let me. So Im wondering, I have the 3gb borderlands, and lets pretend 10gb of DLC, which is way over its actual number, obviously. Or is it, because 13("DLC" and borderlands) plus 18 is 31. That leaves 6gb unaccounted for. Where the crap is all this data? What huge thing am I missing?

How would that free up gigabytes though? The saves are like a few hundred kbs.

The obvious problem is due to PS3 software updates that are REQUIRED.Your PS3 did have 40 gb at first, but it had to install software to make it useable so you lost memory on your PS3 before even buying it.Technicaly your PS3 won't be able to last much longer, you should consider external hard drive.2012-07-02 04:14:00

60 is 55, 250 is 232 see http://kipre.wordpress.com/2009/04/08/disk-space-myths/

Based on what they said when Uncharted 1 & 2 went up about them needing exactly double the space of the file size i think you'll need 24 gb free. 12gb for the downloaded file and 12gb to install it to. Once installationn is complete the downloaded file is deleted leaving just the installed version.

So youre saying that once I free up 24gb and install it, itll go back up to 12gb again? And where is all this missing data anyway, I searched and have no clue...2012-07-02 14:08:00

Yeah it only needs the extra space while installing. I've had the odd download thats corrupted which will get a certain percentage installed before stopping leaving you with the full downloaded file plus a seperate partial installed file.

Are you sure DLC is the only thing you have left? Theres nothing in the game data utility like patches or data installed when starting Blu-ray games?

First off, I assure you that you did receive what you payed for. Sony correctly advertises 40GB because that is the size of the HDD. 1 GB = 109 bytes, but before 2000, it used to refer the the binary amount of 10243 which is now called a GiB (gibibyte). Software still refers to a GiB as a GB like it used to be and HDD manufactures adopted the current meaning of GB. That is why the first 3 GB are missing.

The next 6 GB are missing because every PS3 reserves roughly 12 - 15% of the installed HDD for system use. The rest is used up by your data and possibly game caches (nobody is sure where they are stored). If you were to delete all of your data you should find that you have roughly 31 GB of available space.

What I suggest you do is backup all of your data, both using the system backup tool and individually, and then reformat your HDD. After this install the downloadable game, which as Rabid said, will delete the download data after it installs, then finally restore your backed up saves, photos, etc.

I hope this clears any confusion!

If you're going for a fresh start with a format you should take the oportunity to upgrade to a larger HDD if it is something you can afford to do.2012-07-02 21:05:00

Isnt that what I said basically?

Also, ATM, did you ever play Burnout Paradise? If so, did you ever do the invincible glitch? Because I heard a rumor (that I never got around to testing) where doing that glitch would create "ghost" space on your HDD. Basically space that you couldn't use because the game was using it when it wasn't. Not sure if that is true, though.

I believe that constantly moving data around the disc (downloading/changing/saving/deleting) will cause it to slightly lose some megabytes over time...2012-07-04 18:06:00
