Stars and Stripes Forever*

Last year, when LBPC3 was underway, I seriously considered using John Philip Sousa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Philip_Sousa)'s greatest work (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Stars_and_Stripes_Forever) as the basis for a level. Being as it was August, however, I rejected it as being slightly out of season. Going on about "Stars and Stripes" after July is like singing "Frosty the Snowman" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frosty_the_Snowman) in January. It may work on a technical level--snowmen abound in January, to be sure--but everyone's sick of it by that point.

Since the season's come around again, I figured it was now or never: a level that combines everybody's favorite late 19th century (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/19th_century) march by a bearded chap from the District of Columbia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington,_D.C.) with the simple pleasure of piloting a jetpack (http://wiki.lbpcentral.com/Jetpack) through a particularly unsafe environment.

As the level description suggests, this survival challenge contains five minutes of choreographed obstacles with which to occupy courageous sackpeople. Each section of the music has its own particular style of hazard and repeated portions of the song will have similar survival solutions. Beyond five minutes, the level enters a final loop that will eventually put an end to anyone amazing enough to witness it!

Thanks to everyone that makes an attempt at this musical challenge! And for those of you attending barbecues this weekend... or next weekend... or in the middle of next week... or... all of these... have fun.

The music is well composed and it is a novel survival challenge. I didn't see that the stars were deadly at first it was a bit of a surprise when I first died. But the patterns to avoid were interesting and did provide a challenge. The actual stripes help you line up where to position yourself to. Pretty Fun stuff.

Thanks for the feedback, you've brought up a really important point. I made the stars electric hazards because I wanted them to display a special effect that was more subtle than fire or plasma, but the result is too subtle. It's difficult to actually see the electrical arcs most of the time. I've spent so much time building and testing these obstacles that it never occurred to me that they might not even look dangerous.

Based on your comment, I've added an optional ring at the start of the level that displays a few basic tips if players choose to fly over to it. Hopefully this quickly and accurately conveys the sentiment that stars are electric and best avoided!

Thanks again.

Originally I decided not to post images because I feel that the motion of the obstacles is what makes it fun. A still picture doesn't do it justice.

But since you asked!
