Scorch the Cardboard

Archive: 23 posts

Here is my latest platformer, Scorch the Cardboard. It's an original platformer, no powerups or such. The style is kindof like a factory, alot of moving obstacles. I'd really appreciate if you go and play it, and I hope you'll find it entertaining. Enjoy! :>

queued. just a tip. when putting a level in the level showcase area, it's always a good idea to whet the reader's appetite. convince the reader to queue the level. You can do that by giving a good description of the level, adding pictures etc.2012-06-30 07:09:00

First of all, the level looks beautiful. The music fits really well. Gameplay is unique, I reallyuliked that part at the beginning, where you had to press 4 buttons to get the elevator working, and actually had to press a few of them again or else it would go down. It might not look like much, but I've never seen anything alike before. Kudos for originality. I also liked the rotating score bubbles, it gave a nice touch to the level. I also liked how you had to use the blocks that previously hindered you! Same for those stomping things, I liked how you used their movement right at the section after that. The forward-and-backward moving block is also a very nice idea. One tiny little thing though. At the very beginning of the level, you might want to pan the camera slightly to the left, just to show where you had to go. And maybe a few extra checkpoints.

Altogether, I give this a solid 9/10. Very unique gameplay.

Looks like a real treat yoghurt, well, here's my review for the level. (In case you're curious, the way I review levels is that I review it while playing, this way I get as many details as I can, but also, for some levels, I'll actually talk about certain moments in particular, depending on the elvel.)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'd have to agree with Stuffie3 about the beginning with the camera angle. It's not as much of a problem how it gets to looking, but how fast it pans to the left. Might just be a real minor nitpick, but if you could have the camera at the beginning that moved over to the left move of a bit quicker, that would really help reckless players like me. xD The theme of this level is quite intriguing, giving a wacky, yet fancy feel to the level with the purple mixed in and white splats, yet also using hotel carpets, and that red fancy stuff you walk across. Pellemannen's funky music, switching between all kinds of musical instruments really fits with this curious yet appealing level design, so props to both of you for finding that solid combination in both music and visuals.

The four-button elevator ride is a real cool and interesting challenge, having to manage all switches as the ride makes it's way upward, otherwise it will go back down. The challenge right after, with the layer switching platforms, is also good. You've taken a sort of, learn-it-as-you-go approach, without exactly instructing what the player is supposed to do, but let him instead find out. I have to say, it actually fits pretty well in the case of this level.

Right after that, I had to get on some moving platforms, moving around, up and down sorta. It's interesting how lit cardboard in the back layer appears as a challenge when you fall off these moving platforms, but I'm not too fond of the second area where flamed cardboard appears. I'll explain why. The link below will link to a picture showing what area I'm referring to. Basically, on the left of me is one of the platforms that go up and down. A lot of my player's (myself included) when in that section, is to jump up so they're pushed into the front layer. But by jumping up, they die by hitting the fire. I think that lit cardboard should be separated by a holo wall of sorts, but maybe that's just me. It just felt kidna like a cheap death as it didn't seem like it was meant to be an obstacle. If it is meant to be an obstacle though, having a sign not to jump, but to jump down instead would really be appreciated. Here's that link.

More weirdly-colored splats are spread around the level, continuing this abstract theme. The brick design later is also cool, sharing some similarities to LBP1's "Metropolis" theme at some points. While the wacky music stays strong through and through, when I listened closer, I felt that there was a bit of a lack of sounds. I think a few moving parts could use a bit more audio thrown in, here's a link to one below, showing the factory crushers, which could use something as they move up and down.

TL;DR..

Pros
-------
1. Great, wacky theme
2. Nice mechanics and gameplay
3. Awesome, instrumental theme to go along with the level's craziness

Cons
---------
1. Just one little cheap death, that, if I were you, I might remove, or create some sort of warning sign for.
2. I'd add a little more sounds to some parts, but it's not like it's completely lacking it or anything, just could use a bit more.

No glitches were found while I played this level.

Great job, this was a blast to play, and I hope this review has helped.

Dragonvarsity, I really appreciate you taking some time to write a review. I did check those cons you wrote, and fixed them; the cam at the beginning, the burning cardboard on the pic, and I did increase the volume on the sounds. The level should now be bug-free (more or less ^^) Thanks alot for your feedback 2012-06-30 15:22:00

Hey, only asking because you support F2F, would you mind reviewing my level too: http://lbp.me/v/cffp5-
Thanks. Anyways, like always, I'm writing the review live as I play your level so it can be optimal as possible.

Review:
Opening off, I liked the theme of the level. I also liked how you had to go to the left of the level to begin rather than right. I know its a tiny thing. And the music was really good and reminded me of crash bandicoot straight away.
The lift looked kind off weird and random. I would consider changing it's design. At the start I thought pressing 4 buttons to turn a lift on was stupid but then when I realized it powers down if 4 buttons are not active, than I thought that it was an excellent idea.
I REALLY liked the obstacle right after the lift, the block pushing out flat escalator thing. I loved the idea of using it twice, and the second use was really creative.
I think there should be a checkpint right after the 2nd ascend and right before the burning blocks are falling down on you as you jump.
Right after that, nothing else I can say, everything else was fun and very original. It felt like I was playing a LPB1 level, in a good idea! of course.
Good design and filled with many diverse and fun obstacles. Liked this level

Qued in the meantime as i noticed this is a feedback for feedback forum could play and write me some feedback for my Atlantis The Platformer level i am currently away from the ps3 at the moment but i promise to play the level and give feedback as long as i get feedback back. Can you get that or am i too confusing if so check this link.
https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=77053-Atlantis-The-Platformer

EDIT:

ok thanks for the feedback on Atlantis. Umm pretty much a nice simple level lacks some detail due to the materials it looks bland to me. Umm music tied in really well. I'd like a reason to why the cardboard is burning or a boss that is burning it or maybe even the player burns it by getting near. Yep sorry the feedback is short i also replied to you on my Atlantis forum.

Qued! People saying good things so I'll have a look and edit this post this weekend, please f4f my level here:
https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=76272-Aztec-Jungle-Gold-Hunters
thankyou!
EDIT This is a fine gad indeed, all the obstacles were creative and had nice context, like the in and out shunters dropping the cardboard on the conveyers. The funky elevator at the start set up the level well and the music fitted just right. I found no glitches or problems here at all, just good fun

Update: The sequel is cancelled but I merged what I started on in the sequel with the original level, which made it even longer. So if you've already played it, it's like a couple of minutes more of gameplay now, so try it again if you like. Thanks!2013-01-05 18:36:00

Played thru this level several times. It's a very competently crafted level...everything worked with no glitches, but not a whole lot really stood out from the other platformers. The theme was interesting, but other than being explained by the title...why is the cardboard burning? Perhaps a story to go with it would help.2013-01-07 01:39:00

That's kinda the idea, that there shouldn't be a story. I wanted it to be a kinda random theme with music that normally wouldn't fit and no story. Anyway, thanks for your feedback!
