SA reviews "The Abandoned Coal Mine"

Archive: 2 posts

Before xbriandeadx told me he wanted his levels reviewed, I wonder if he remembers way back in the day when I pointed out a glitch in his second level "'His' World" when I was critiquing the 2. This was way back, long before I had opened myself to the reviewing table, but those two levels are part of what gave me the idea to start doing this.

Without further ado, what is "The Abandoned Coal Mine"? I suppose I could tell you, but come on the name practically yells it out.

You are the unlucky sack person that fell in the abandoned coal mine, let's name you........Carl because sack person takes too long. At a first glance Carl notices that most of the mine's lights are still on, which is strange since the mine is supposed to be abandoned. After finding a rail cart, you ride it downhill into the mine, but the mine cart goes a tad out of control and you end up deep down in the mine with no escape. Feeling adventurous, Carl presses forward only to run into a demonic figure, whom we shall call...............Lenny. Lenny tells you that there is no way out and that you should abandon all hope, then he disappears. Going forward, you will have to traverse some fairly simple but also fairly fun timing jumps and platforming standards until you reach another miner who also got stuck here. Let's call him........ah screw it. Anyway drag the miner onto the newly created platform and go up. You make it a little further until you realize that the miner gets stuck and can't be carried any further, so you have to leave him behind. Take a few steps and then the miner you left behind falls into a caved in hole. Wow, good thing I didn't bother naming him. Ironically enough, you walk a bit further and the ghost of the man that just died asks you "why did you leave me behind?", to which I can only respond by saying that it's not my fault his fat **** couldn't wedge through the hole, survival of the fittest. Apparently Lenny also sees fit to insult me for leaving behind the miner, and even asks whether or not I had even bothered to get his name. Well gee golly whilakers, why didn't I think of that?!?!?!

Anyways, you go a little further only to find that unnamed miner is STILL ALIVE, but was captured by Lenny who was only trying to fool me the whole time. He also explains that there's a trap ahead, so at this point miner is now named Akbar. Apparently Akbar's been trying to get out of the mine for years with no success, claiming that it's impossible. Well, let's prove him wrong shall we?

When you encounter Lenny again stating that "The fun is really about to begin", I figured I'd play along and put on my angry face before going forward. So, you now have to fight Lenny in what is quite possibly the most complicated and elaborate boss fight I think I've ever seen in this game. So much of fighting this boss is precision jumping on an entirely new level, mostly due to finding ways to "break the game", which is required if you want to beat it. The only advice I'll give for this long section is the following: Be Creative. Take advantage of momentum and think outside the box a little and you will win. As for xBDx, I only have this advice: make it a little easier to see where you are supposed to be going next, because the battle is extremely difficult to navigate.

Finally, Carl is free and escapes via a large mine cart into the sunny overworld, and Carl lived happily ever after.

OR DID HE?!?!? :kz::kz::kz::kz::kz::kz:

Turns out, Lenny is outraged and further exclaims that it is impossible to escape from the mine, and laughs as this fake stage end dissolves, plummeting Carl to the very bottom of the mine, where he will remain trapped forever. Even Akbar sees Carl and simply responds with "looks like you're trapped here with me". Then the stage is finished with this not quite so positive cliffhanger.

So, how does it stack up? Fairly well, actually. The level is incredibly dark both with limited lighting and dark filters, so it's a little hard to see sometimes. Everything in this stage is either dark gray or dark red, and overall it feels about as gritty as Gears of War, but that's part of what makes the level neat is the dark gritty feeling it carries, which is totally appropriate for the mood. I suppose the only thing I'd complain about is the fact that there isn't a whole lot of actual "level" present until you reach the last battle, which is basically produces a difficulty spike larger than the human population growth in the last decade "ba dum tish".

Final Score:
7.5 / 10
Goes from being a walk in the park to getting raped by a dog in a matter of seconds, boss battle is harder to navigate than a rotating labyrinth, but the appearence and mood are definitely novel to this game and overall it's a good visual experience.

On a side note, 3 reviews in 1 day makes Andrew a dull boy
