My First Creation

Archive: 4 posts

This is the first level I've ever made. As a budding new creator. I could certainly use any feedback in order to improve my knowledge of level creation. Also note, if you view my Moon, there's a second level as well. It would be great to see some feedback for that level as well.

If any of you expert creators out there have a few ideas you'd like to share with me (or even show me). Feel free to add me on PSN and we'll get together to see what more I can learn. I'd eventually like to build a level that I'd feel confident to submit to the Community Spotlight contest here at LBPCentral, so with that goal in mind, learning is the best tool in my repretoire at the moment and I intend to make every use of that.

Thanks in advance for giving my level a try (Or both! =D) and I hope to build better levels for the community in the future.

I will give both a try, and leave a short review here!

Edit:
Temple Swings
This was pretty good for a first level.
Some things you could do to improve your level:
- Add some decoration! I know the level is huge, but maybe you could make it look more like a temple. A level is so much better if you have nice stuff to look at.
- Away with the rectangular shapes! Make some nice shapes out of it. You can use the cutting tool and decorations to make shapes look nicer. The extra layers can also be useful.
- Check if every checkpoint has the necessary upgrades. You don't want to die and end up at a checkpoint, only to find out that you can't progress any further because the checkpoint is missing a grappling hook.
- Give hard spots an infinite lives checkpoint.

Jungle Steps
Large portions of the level are skippable by just jumping down in some places. Also, one of the bounce pads catapulted me into the far right corner of the level, so i got stuck there. This level really needs some work Make sure every area is reachable only when the player is supposed to reach it!

Good luck creating more levels, and improving these!

I'm aware of the fact some parts of the level can be reached by simply jumping down. I deliberately designed the level in this way. However I believe that players only discover this fact after one or two plays. I might be wrong but the parts where you can jump down aren't noticeable until you actually get there. As for the bounce pad, that was also a deliberate 'mistake'. You should have wound up in a small area I built and labeled it a secret area. If you continue left, you'll come across some fire blocks under some stairs. You can walk behind them from the third layer as I knew that people might get flung behind the wall I built to stop players from going too far.

But I do thank you for the feedback. Definetly something to be looking at and thinking of how I can improve. I'll take a look at the two levels and see what I can do to fix some of the problems players are having. I'll drop you a line when I get the chance to apply the changes and see if there's anything more I can do.
