Water Physics (Videos) New Test level out With Added Video!

Archive: 48 posts

EDIT: New water test 3 out

<object width="480" height="295"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Ty6RGLvVZgg&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Ty6RGLvVZgg&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="295"></embed></object>

Back in the beta I created simple water physics by having an emitter create lots of small blue coloured sponges. The outcome was fairly good the water can be push and can make spashes. Another cool thing is the water sort of merges together so it can fill up bucket type containers.

Video 1:
Water being pushed around on a hill

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/-IfKr9IzrWw&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/-IfKr9IzrWw&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Video 2:
In this video the water actually spins the wheel back and fourth, there are no wobble bolts just a bolt. I did this test to see if the water had an actual weight which it does to some degree.

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/M8FtC8K4fio&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/M8FtC8K4fio&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Both levels are published so if you have time I would say to check them out

Hmmm this is interesting. So are the blue globs one sponge or many together?2009-01-06 15:30:00

Yup I did this randomly with friends, we kind of made guns that spewed sponges and um...

Shot each other with them D:

I have an entire level of completely random crap called "the lab", it's thermometer is about capped out via 2 billion rockets...

Did you know you can make a rocket as big as you want?

Wow.
My brother tried this just now. It works surprisingly well and looks really nice visually.
The scary thing is, it actually sounded like water... imagine a few dripping fairly quickly in a quiet, echoey room...

After reading this i thought heck im going to make a big pool of this, the only problem is there is massive slowdown with around 8 emmiters pumping globules at a rate of 0.1 it looks cool, but unfortunatley at this stage it is probably limited to smaller scale......2009-01-06 22:57:00

I saw this posted on the workshop forums... it's pretty cool, and water is something all our creations could do with more of. We're thirsty

I wish we could utilize effects like this without killing the thermometer or overloading an area's framerate with complexity so that we could have water running everywhere.

I've been messing with large paintball streams, angled at slow velocity with no linear velocity to make palpable water with lots of resistance and forward inertia - if I jack your technique I bet it would make it perfect.

Another awesome way to simulate the feeling of being in water? Hidden complexity. If you can overload the camera with unseen complexity only in certain zones - the player will move as if he were in water, only when you want him to. Some glass floors, and some splash sound effects, and it happens seamlessly and just "feels" right.

This is pretty cool. The only problem I see here is that they weren't completely stickered blue. XD2009-01-07 01:37:00

It's nice, but it'd be nicer if the sticker actually covered the whole piece of sponge! lol.2009-01-07 02:08:00

That's pretty effective. You should probably paint the entire sponge though or it looks kind of lame. This is the only instance of water I've seen that isn't lag-tacular, nice job.2009-01-07 05:34:00

yeah just tried to make a speed boat in this type of water and let me tell you it looks great but the thermo fills insanely fast(the entire run was only a few sackboy feet) and the frame rate drops right off, to bad because you came up with a cool idea too.2009-01-07 20:55:00

Well use it in small amounts. It works better, Maybe to create a small waterfall or something, but it sounded cool what you did.

Whoa. I love this effect, but theres a problem. You can see the yellow of the sponge. I've noticed that big stickers cover the whole object so you can't see any of the original.

Still, it's truly ingenius.

That was cool and interesting.

I could see that that was glass of some sort, it seemed to work pretty well.

My only query is that can the player interact with it? if so I might start doing some tests, using glass

You can test it out for yourself. lbp's PSN is Skulpt, so search that and you should find it

That is cool.. I played a jet ski level before, it was pretty good but really laggy. You could dive below the water and it'd push you up.. geez. It was by someone called EVOLUTION74 or something..2009-01-11 04:49:00

Maybe not...

Actually you'd be surprised, I've seen it in a level and the sound the paint balls make when they hit the ground is not unlike rain, it was pretty convincing... Of course in this case, the fog was brought way up so you couldn't see much, but I think there is promise in this idea (for some occasions, not all).

Whoa... You can emit paintballs? I had no idea of that, and how on earth would you manage to capture it in time? I guess you would need two players.

You wouldn't need 2 players just equip the paintainator, pause the game by pressing the up arrow and fire. The paintball should remain in the air for you to capture it.
