How to make 3D background layers?

| Help! I'm trying to make a level with things in background. I know there was a glitched material that you could place in the foreground or background, because I got it a long time ago in LBP1, but now when I try to use it, all I can place are squares and I know other people have created very detailed backgrounds, so I don't know if there is another material or another way to do this.
