Spinning Cogs

Archive: 14 posts

Hello folks!

Today I've published one of my old levels, I ran trough all my levels on My Moon and i popped into this level. It's called "Spinning Cogs" and it's a relaxing level with a very artistic visual design, so I'll hope you'll enjoy it. The level is quite short due to the thermometer but I've made part 2 which will be out soon! (Hopefully)

Those screenshots look good, very nice visuals. I've queued it up, so hopefully I'll give it a quick review.2012-06-10 21:20:00

Very nice looking visuals. Reminds me of Luos's Reh-tahl series. Q'd 2012-06-11 03:00:00

Alright, I have played this level, and here's my review of it. (Just wanna tell you that I review this level while I play it, so I can write down a bunch of things that cross my mind, and if I put a lot of criticisms, it doesn't mean I don't like your level, it's just that my main goal is to seek out which imo, could be tweaked, removed, or replaced....now, onto the review.)

So far, it's really beautiful, really, great job on setting up the environment. The use of cogs and nature works real well, and the decorating doesn't seem overdone one bit. It all looks beautiful, and point bubbles are organized, also good. The inclusion of eggs is nice, even though you can basically trip over them, instead of having to dig deep looking for them like in some levels with those kind of secrets, but that's fine, nobody said secrets had to be hard to find, so nothing wrong with that either. Although, it did feel a tad bit weird with the yellow eggs included, I mean, maybe it was just me, but I did try lurking around those to see if I got any points from those as well. I'm not saying you have to remove them, but perhaps a little subtitle message could be put in clarifying? It's probably a very minimal nitpick, so don't worry too much about that.

Music works nice, I love the little moving parts, the wood towers, oh and the chain bringing you up. Man, really good work. the white arrows pointing you in your direction tie in good too. I do really like those green cactus-y things appearing like spikes, and the transition through the tube into the cavern works well. I also thought it was neat how in the beginning, if you moved to the right, you could see a bit of the cavern. Little previews like that are good, oh, and the use of moving through the same environment but with different challenges in different layers was well presented.

The lighting stays strong, as does the foliage, as you enter the cavern, and the sounds added to the moving platforms fits well. I do like the bounce pads added too, but perhaps you could try fitting in green holo onto the bounce pads? I'm sure the bounce pads are fine being white, but I think it might be neat for you to try. If you don't know what I mean by "putting green holo on it", it's a trick a friend of mine uses to change a bounce pad's color. In the end though, the level design, and the use of materials, sticker,s lighting and decoration makes for a truely polished level. My one, true complaint in the end, is about the end. Maybe put a little more foliage around the scoreboard, plus I'd extend the rock floor around the scoreboard a little, because as you're falling, you could see part of the background stick out in the bottom-right corner. But that's pretty much it. This was a marvelous level, well done.

Now, while this level did excel in design and gameplay, I was able to find four different glitches while playing. Three of them are 'escape' glitches, while one of them is a 'stuck' glitch. Here they are.

THE GLITCHES.
---------------------------------------
(If it's hard for you to understand what I mean by some glitches, I try to give instructions on how to re-enact those glitches, so free to follow those instructions incase you're confused or want to be sure of something)

1. In the beginning, when you reach the back layer and move left, you arrive on a platform, where you're meant to grab onto the chained circle above. But if you don't and instead just walk left, you'll drop off the platform, and will fall out of the level. I guess there wasn't any plasma put back in there, so if I were you, I'd add some. Here's a picture you should look at while reading to make things clearer.

2. Back at the beginning, around the same area. Let's say you did grab onto the chained circle, but as it goes up in the back layer, you can drop off, and you'll land here. But instead of escaping, you're stuck in what is like a little monkey prison. due to the invisible wall, you can't drop back off into the front layer. So either remove the invisible wall in front of the monkey prison while keeping the rest, or make sure you can't land into the booby trap. Here's a picture to look at while reading.

3. Again, at the beginning, another escape glitch. Although this time, it doesn't have to do with monkey prisons or invisible walls. After grabbing the egg in the middle of the brown fence, I went left, and jumped into the back layer. Just what I'm supposed to do, only, instead of walking left, I started walking right. Keep walking right in this area, and you fall out of the level. Either put a floor beneath the grassy decos there, or put some plasma below. I think people will like some hidden floor better though. Picture for reference....

4. Final glitch, and this time it's not at the beginning, but further in. Might as well be looking at the picture, as just like the other pictures, you'll be familiar with the area. Instead of moving on right, you'll want to jump from that safe little checkpoint area, but jump left Instead of landing on the spikes, there's a good chance you'll land on part of the rock wall in the back layer. This will slide you down that layer, outside of the level. Either put an invisible wall there so you land on the spikes, or hide some plasma incase you fall down and slide. Obviously, I'm sure invisible wall would be preferred. Here's the image.

I hope these glitches found help make the level more polished in the long run. ^^

Thank you so much for the feedback, that is one fine job done

I'll make an update to the level with the new bug/glitches you've found. You're real reviewer/bug-blaster! Again, thanks!

You're welcome, it was a lot of fun to play. Breaking levels is a fun habit of mine, good to see you're one of those people who enjoy it, I've actually gone through some creators' levels with them, finding bugs left and right, making them quite peeved

I like how you've gone back and fixed a few minor details that make the level something completely different! Makes me want to go back and fix all the rubbish I have on my Earth, which I will do someday...2013-11-10 06:48:00
