A suggestion after the BANNED fiasco

Archive: 5 posts

I've got the hump with Rabid Coot

I just sat there and read through "5+ pages" (as I always read every post in a thread before I post a reply) of SP's Ban thread and was about to post what I thought.
AND CC CLOSED IT

JOKES RC & CC
Love ya really

Though I do think a thread like that shouldn't happen ever again, due to obviously everyone getting into heated discussion

But I also get very annoyed when I see a newly banned member and have no reason given. Maybe just a short reason would be acceptable.

Like for example SuperPhillip's Situation:
1)Was warned for double posting
2)Proceeded to argue with staff over decision
3)Was silenced for 19 days (<-- is that right 5+14 I think)
4)Became very abusive towards staff and requested to be banned
5)So was therefore BANNED

This way no dialogue of the situation is divulged but it gives an overview of the reason.

To say that it isn't any members business why a member is banned is in my opinion rubbish.
We are a community after all and some members regard other members as friends. So if someone just appears on the forum as banned and we have no explanation, then I think this is wrong.
I was sent quite a few PM's asking why Marino was banned and I just informed people that asked me what I saw people talking about on SPAM CAN and said I had no idea if what was said had any truth.

So for Marino's Situation (from what I saw people talking about) it would be:
1) He started putting up links to Inappropriate Material
2) He was warned by a member of staff not to do it any more
3) He continued to post further links
4) He was Silenced for 2 weeks
5) He then sent a member of staff a PM requesting to banned
6) His request was granted and he was Banned

Though I do not think any of us have reason to judge the staffs decisions (as I believe "TOO many Chiefs and not enough Indians" is a bad situation to be in).
I do think keeping us completely in the dark is as bad as The Full Blown Coverage we just witnessed.

These are merely my thoughts on the situation on Banned members and I just thought I'd put my thoughts across and see what others thought

Locked thread with info of bans would stop everyone asking "omgz why did eh get banned unfair i tellz u!" and making threads, so it's a good idea. Yep.

imho, of course

I was just going to say that. A locked, stickied thread with maybe a list?

Though this would seem unfair to the people banned to have their names permanently stickied on the forums.

No, we're not going to keep a list of banned members. Sorry, but it's asking for people to dissect our decisions and challenge the staff, and while criticism is useful, once a member is banned, it shouldn't be up for debate. I made the mistake of allowing everyone to see what lead up to SP's ban, and in the process I made a valued mod look bad because some people decided to call it an "abuse of power"(which it was not in any way, but that's another discussion). It's simply not going to happen.2009-01-05 21:28:00
