Changing layers

Archive: 10 posts

Okay, so in my newest level, soon to be published, there is a lot of platforms that move in and out. However, recently, they've stopped working. And it's incredibly annoying. The problems seem to be solved if i enlarge the hole that it moves into in the back wall. However this leaves it looking untidy, and it means that it's not snapped to the grid anymore.
Just to clarify, the set up I've got:
-A hole in the wall- for example, a 4x2 small grid rectangle.
-A platform- a platform that fits the hole exactly- it's 4x2 as well.
-The platform has a anti-grav on it with 100% dampening so it can't move at all. And then, on the attached microchip, it has two in/out movers. One saying move to front, one saying move to middle. When a signal is recieved, it will move in. If it doesnt get a signal, it will move to the front.

So back to the problem: they just don't seem to be able to move inwards. And even if it does, it won't come back out.
Can anyone help?

Actually, 100% dampening means ~99.99% dampening, so it might move a very tiny bit. Maybe have the platform and the hole two layers thick so the platform is always in the confines of the wall. 2012-06-08 22:34:00

Thanks for the help, that does work perfectly. The strange thing is that editing it later they all seemed to work. But after signing off and back on they stopped working? So I guess I'll have to use your 2 layer system. To be honest it does give a cleaner look. But what you said about dampening....Does that mean that levels created in the modular level design style, such as Comphermc demonstrates in his LBP2-torial, actually comes apart after a while of jumping around on it? Or would a larger force be required?2012-06-12 19:01:00

Well personally I haven't experienced anything, so I'm just hoping that one day the whole of my level doesn't start falling apart....

It shouldn't. What dampening does, is it reduces the speed of the object, times the percent activiated. For example, say your Anti-Gravity Tweaker had a dampening of 50%. If you had a block with a mover going 10 to the left, it would take the speed of the impact as 5. The Anti-Gravity Tweaker then with its Gravity setting (Or whatever the top on is) absorbs the impact and moves it a tiny bit. I hope this makes a little sense..2012-06-12 20:43:00

Yeah, I always like my levels attached to a bit of LM just incase. Incidentally, what's the difference between LM and DM?2012-06-13 17:46:00

Nothing.
Oh okay, so it's just visuals? I prefer LM, it's slightly cleaner looking, even though the player will never see it, my levels have to be neat
