I was literally shouting at the screen when he couldn't figure out that to make the platforms come back out you had to use the back touch!

Ha ha, yeah, pretty easy to figure out, even though it's something new to the Vita. It's a cool use of the back touch pad...and the touch geometry is all blue with big finger prints on it, very intuitive. I do find the mix of touch and regular platforming to be a bit awkward...hopefully it's not used gratuitously for the story levels in the retail version.

yeah, i agree. what the community need to embrace when they finally get their grubby little paws on this is to ONLY use touch when it makes sense and not just crowbar it in because it's there

Dam! I also thought about posting a thread like this but you were first GribbleGrunger.

So now we know something more from the story. The whole planet in LBPV is called "Carnivalia". The first level's called "A Carnival On The Run" created by Colonel Flounder. BTW you're right. This guy really sucks at this game.

Here's some more media:

LBP 2 PS3 and PS Vita Cross Control gameplay demonstration (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsnt29mLdWw&feature=related)

BTW I wonder why there's no LBP Karting forum on LBPC. It's still a LBP game...

LittleBigPlanet Vita Hands-On Preview

LittleBigPlanet Vita

The Vita is off to a slow start. While the initial launch line-up was decent, with only a couple of exceptional games to really push sales, game releases for the system have come almost to a complete stop. Luckily, the system does have a few high-profile games set for release later this year, but arguably the biggest among them is LittleBigPlanet. I recently received an invitation to participate in the beta, and after putting a significant amount of time into exploring this portable craft-world, I have come to one conclusion; LittleBigPlanet is going to save the Vita.

I assume that everybody who is reading this article has already played LittleBigPlanet in one form or another, whether it be on the PS3 or PSP. In case you haven’t, however, but are intent on making the upcoming handheld title your first foray in the life of a Sack-thing, here’s a quick run-down. LittleBigPlanet is all about good old fashioned platforming and collect-a-thons, with some clever puzzles thrown into the mix, some great multiplayer to spice things up, and most importantly, creativity and customization. All of this is set in a world made of cardboard, fabric, wood, and so on.

LittleBigPlanet for the Vita is certainly no different, only this time it uses the features that are unique to the system. You’ll find all of your favorite gadgets here, including the grappling hook and the Creatinator, and platforming is handled in exactly the same way as previous titles. However, with addition of touch controls, some platforms and objects can now be moved around to set-up new pathways, or pushed front or back between layers using the front and rear touch screens respectively. During one of the levels included in the beta, you are tasked with creating a pathway through a series of blue block by pushing them into the background while jumping on others, all while running from a laser that isn’t Sackboy friendly. It makes for some very fun and exciting gameplay, and it will be interesting to see how it is utilized in more levels from the story mode.

Jumping into the game was no different than playing it on PS3, which all of the controls preforming exactly the same, and it was very precise. Thanks to the addition of the second analog stick, it has also become much easier to rotate and resize objects in create mode, but I’ll get to that in a minute. It also allows you to hold the L button and move your arms around for a little bit of fun waving or making angry movements if you’ve lost a versus level, and while it’s only a small feature, nothing beats smacking another player when they get in your way.

The beta also includes two levels created by the developers that are different from the typical platforming. One is a top-down tank battle game, the second is an artistic 2D platformer that has you controlling a round ball-creature by tapping the screen where you want him to jump. It was a lot of fun, and does a good job showing off the types of games that can be created via the Create mode.

Of course, Create mode is the main draw to LittleBigPlanet, and thankfully, the full creation tool set is available for the Vita, with the addition of some new and easier to use tools. Materials are exactly what you would expect to find, only now there are touchable materials that can be interacted with in a variety of ways. Using these materials to make switches, movable platforms, and other interactive goodies is very easy. One of the other net additions is the “effects” materials that can be place in front of, or behind, layers in order to give the level different effects, such as rain, snow, or a moving starfield.

The traditional controls are also used during Create mode, but touch controls have also been added, and they are a big help. While I still prefer using the right control stick for resizing and rotating objects, multitouch is an option. The best part of using the touch screen is that it is much easier to use materials to draw your own shapes, and then edit them with the corner editor to refine them.

You can now also create an actual menu screen for your games, including a title, a “start” or “play” button, and even a level select screen that shows which levels you’ve unlocked or can choose from. Now, creators can truly create their own games, rather than just link their levels with an end-level portal.

20120606lbp vita e3 06 LittleBigPlanet Vita Hands On Preview

It seems that a lot of people have been finding the new creation tools and controls much easier to use, because the online community is already flooding with some very well-designed levels. Once the full game is released, I’m sure we’ll be seeing a lot of veteran creators making some incredible content, and thanks to the games accessibility, it’s now easier for newcomers to join the community without feeling overwhelmed by the complicated tools.

While I was playing the beta, I did experience some strange bugs. One had me falling through the developer-created level, and others were just minor graphical issues. These issues were reported, and were quickly fixed with an update to the beta app. However, one persistent problem was slowdown, to the point where the game became completely unplayable. It wasn’t a normal frame-rate issue, because it was happening when there was barely anything on screen, and it cause the game to freeze, and then move about one frame per second. It seems to be caused by a sudden disconnection from the internet, in which the game is then constantly trying to connect. This could be forgiven if it was during a user-created level, but it was during the story mode levels in which I wouldn’t be required to connect to the internet anyway. I was able to fix the issue by pressing the home button and then opening the app again, but this only worked a couple of times. Hopefully this issues gets fixed before the game’s release.

All-in-all, LittleBigPlanet on the Vita is exactly what you would expect. It’s another fun adventure in the Sack world, once again with a heavy focus on creating your own levels. This time around, though, the Create mode is much more accessible, while maintaining the complexity that veteran creators love to see. When the game is finally released, and the bugs are fixed, LittleBigPlanet will be the must-own game of the Vita library.

I was waiting for this one. Thanks!

what i'm happy with is the fact that you can reset the Memorizer just for yourself or completely. i was wondering how you would be able to recheck a republished level and now it seems easy

Hey, wow.... Didn't realize there was actually a video for Hoppy. And it looks like my reputation stays intact. I managed to make Frogger into what looks like an extremely frustrating experience!

Hoppy the Helpless? lol

Looked like fun! Too bad you don't get points for squishing him. They would have been hitting the high scores for sure!

it looks like you can get a much clearer effect with the sticker panel and pictures on the Vita. am i mistaken?
i'm assuming you took pictures of some toy cars and cut them out to put them on the sticker panel? but if you did that, how did you get the shape of the car because you would still have the rectangle from the photo as well as the car... and as far as i know, you can't cut away part of a photo (OR CAN YOU!)

I'd also like to hear on what the quality of recording sounds is like too

Yes, all the cars and logs are ACTUAL cars and logs (not toys). The camera in the vita works great - a far better experience than I ever had with the ps eye. Basically, I sat on the sofa with my iPad, pulled up photos, took a picture, and put the picture on a sticker panel. Then, I used the cutting tool to manually cut out the shape of the car.

I used the same technique in Liberator in lbp2. I placed objects on the screen, took a picture, put the pictur on a sticker panel and cut out the shapes.

No kiddin? Wow... makes me wonder about maybe getting one now. Never cared for handhelds that much, but do like the sound of the improvements.

You do realise that you can use the touchscreen to edit pictures don't you? It was shown in a trailer for the game last year.

I'm adding this in because they are very well made, clear and do the LBPVita justice. I deleted the others but I feel these are of a high quality and deserve to be seen. please let me know if they are not acceptable and I will remove them: of special interest is the ability to tweak layers within layers!

I'm pretty sure this is different from theck and thack :S But it's still an awesome feature non-theless.

This lets you have a combined layer of thin and thick, where as theck (or was it thack) was a thick material that looked thin-ish.
But with the inclusion of layer positioning, the detailing use of theck and thack are extremely amplified

(Now, if only someone could replicate the 3d layers glitch :S )

Opinion: Why LittleBigPlanet Is Vita’s Killer App

It’s no longer reasonable to think of LittleBigPlanet as a platformer. It’s not. Having spent some time with an updated build of the beta that’s currently doing the rounds, Sackboy’s original focus – leaping around and grabbing onto sponge – might still manifest itself throughout the game but it’s a game much more focused on widening the scope on what this hugely powerful tool can deliver.

It’s a block shifting puzzle game, for example; a four player tank blaster; a shoot-em-up; a Tomytronic-style three lane racer – all of these things not only tightly integrate with the main story progression, but they’re designed by the developers themselves and they’re there day one. They’re not user creations, they’re in the game from the off, and they’re easily the equal of the further refined platforming that the series was first known for.

Further refined? Jumping is better, for starters: it’s less floaty and much easier to gauge your landings; the level design feels tighter, a no brainer given the inclusion of several key community designers from the earlier LittleBigPlanet games to the team, and it all just feels a little more snappier and exciting.

Away from the platforming, though, and one such side game – Tapling – is in the beta as part of the limited number of main levels to try.

You’ve probably played it assuming you got a code: it’s a tap-to-jump affair which ooses ridiculously high presentation and production values and wouldn’t look out of place for a couple of quid on the iPhone App Store. In fact, I’d probably buy it if it was. But here it is, part of LittleBigPlanet, and couldn’t be further away from Sackboy’s traditional mechanics (he’s not even in it) if it tried.

Like the rest of the game, Tapling is beautiful, albeit framed in familiar a LIMBO-esque aesthetic, and actually rather good fun. It’s also – like everything in the game, built with the included editor tools, and with that in mind it’s even more impressive, especially given the way it remembers your progress – it really does feel like its own distinct game. Naturally there are bigger things down the line, but as a teaser for what’s to come Tapling is brilliantly done.

And as we’ve said already, the prospect of LBP as an App Store is hugely exciting.

With Media Molecule on the sidelines advising, development duties are in the hands of Tarsier and Double Eleven, a pair of studios that not only get what LittleBigPlanet games should be, but also what portable games should be.

That’s deftly demonstrated by speedy loading, the ability to store user created content locally so an internet connection isn’t always required, and all manner of social inter-activities that build up a considerable community presence.

It’s clear that this aspect is especially important to Sony this time around.

You can see this already in the user generated sections. Users are ‘hearting’ each other’s levels, commenting on creations and promoting the stuff they like the best. Profiles show what you’ve done and when, Facebook style, and it all magically tranfers to lbp.me without you having to lift a finger. It’s flawless, deep and hugely impressive, and finding cool new levels to try is a breeze, even at this pre-release stage with plenty of time to tweak.

This Vita version of LittleBigPlanet might offer all-new levels and challenges, but it also lets users use purchases from the PS3 games on top of the fact that the Vita’s touchscreen and built-in camera mean that – with a few UI differences – the editor is now even easier to use. Tap-and-hold menus offer quicker routes to tools and goodies, sliding through the racks of options is intuitive and natural and you can – of course – use touch control in your user generated games.

Everything just feels better. Visual cues as to where you’re placing objects in the 3D space; new handlers for AI and input; gesture-based input.

And with all this, expect to see things you didn’t think possible, if the early piles of ideas gently bubbling away just now are anything to go by.

I’ve played Connect 4, front-and-back touchscreen powered ant squishing, a nifty Frogger clone, an RTS demo, underwater scrollers, even a game where you control one Sackboy with the analog stick and control another with the touchscreen, offering up all manner of Escape Plan-esque puzzles as the two work together.

It’s not hard to appreciate how deep LittleBigPlanet Vita is and how important it is to the platform. Above everything else before – and that includes WipEout and Uncharted – LBP demonstrates just how powerful the Vita is and what it can do in the hands of talented developers. It’s visually strong, plays pretty much perfectly and offers more depth (and potential longevity) than everything else on the system put together. Hyperbole, perhaps, but the potential is there.

If there is such a thing as a killer app, this is it.

LittleBigPlanet: Vita’s Answer to the AppStore?

Apple’s AppStore has changed the way we game. Bite-sized chunks of gaming have become the best way to get your gaming fix on the go. Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja and Tiny Wings, to name a few, allow for easily accessible, touch screen controls and excellent gameplay on a portable device. Many people don’t want games like Uncharted on a handheld console; a lot of people would rather just have small yet sweet playthings.

This is where LittleBigPlanet comes in; rather than paying a sum of money for each of those minigames, you’ll be able to play many touch-controlled app-style games as well as the more traditional levels available. Once the community gets their hands on the game, who knows what we’ll see. Perhaps someone will create the next Jetpack Joyride inside LittleBigPlanet. We’ve seen amazing things with the home console versions, so with these new touch tools for creations, there’s bound to be an abundance of creations.

In fact, that’s exactly what LittleBigPlanet Vita wants to be for: creating these little, inspired levels similar to apps, making the perfect handheld experience so every Vita with LittleBigPlanet will feature its own set of mini-games, perfect for when you’re on the go.

In my time with the game, I was shown a few developer-created levels. My first glimpse of LBP Vita was an air hockey style game, played with two players holding the Vita vertically rather than horizontally. This game, while just a quick example of the touch screen controls, played brilliantly; each player could control a hockey paddle with their finger and played a versus game of air hockey – it actually worked rather well. This was made with the in-game tools, too, so we’ll see many more of these brilliant two player multi-touch games after the game is released.

Another game, in the style of Plinko, involved tapping switches on the screen to change routes, in order to match balls with their colour; this worked well and showed off the Vita’s responsive touch controls as well as acting as another example of a mini-game that could be created. While another small game acted as a top-down racer, with a futuristic style similar to Tron, played with the Vita vertical and using the stick below the screen, showing that it’s not only touch controls that make the Vita unique; the screen rotation can make a big difference, too.

Yes, we’ll probably see a lot of Angry Birds clones – which isn’t entirely a bad thing – but in amongst these creations we’ll see some genuinely ingenious mini-games and levels. We’ve seen the enormity of things that can be made in the Create mode of LittleBigPlanet 2 and the Vita version will contain these tools and more (including the mapping of all of the Vita’s touch controls and even multi-touch functionality) so that those with the skills can make basically anything you’d want on your Smartphone, on your Vita.

LittleBigPlanet harnesses every feature of the Vita to its maximum potential; whether it’s in the aforementioned mini-games or the more traditional platforming levels. You see, LittleBigPlanet’s layers work wondrously with the Vita’s front and back touch controls.

Using the touch screen, you can move blocks that are too heavy for Sackboy with your finger to where you need them to be, or pull back on a catapult to fling Sackboy across the level. The rear touch panel is also used to do things such as pushing out blocks from behind to make stairways and bridges to cross.

Even the Vita’s tilt controls are harnessed in the game, allowing you to move a swinging platform within jumping distance.

There’s the usual LittleBigPlanet charm and the graphics are pretty excellent, too – Sackboy isn’t as neat as he is on PlayStation 3, but the environments are as colourful as ever, and there’s lots of customisable options from the looks of things. It plays wonderfully, too – the platforming is as good as ever, yet the game still retains those physics that define how LittleBigPlanet plays.

The Vita version of LittleBigPlanet looks to be an excellent blend of both a big platforming adventure and a wonderful, practically endless collection of mini-games to play – some of which will be incredible, going by what we’ve seen made in LittleBigPlanet before. To cement the game’s use as a marketplace for mini-games, plans are to allow players to be able to download levels at home, for use on the go. Long journeys or even short trips will be better than ever when you have a mountain of free, downloaded levels in your pocket.

TGL Interview: XDev’s Tom O’Connor talks LittleBigPlanet Vita

CommentJuly 19th, 2012 02:32

TGL recently caught up with Sony Computer Entertainment XDev and LittleBigPlanet Producer Tom O’Connor to get the lowdown on what we can expect from LittleBigPlanet Vita ahead of it’s release later this year. We ask Tom about how the greater LBP experience compliments Vita’s unique functionality, what the Vita crucially adds to the experience and why LBP Vita is the most definitive LBP game on any platform to date.

Here we go:

TGL: A lot was made of the “Play.Create.Share” philosophy that defined the original iteration of LittleBigPlanet when it was first revealed all those years back. Some four years on, does the “Play.Create.Share” paradigm still carry the same relevance and virility as it did back when it first arrived on PS3?

Tom O’Connor: Back in 2008 when the first LittleBigPlanet came out, it was essentially a platform game and the added tools allowed people to create other platform games and share them within the community. People always found new ways of creating new and varied experiences and this added to the charm of it. The Play.Create.Share idea allowed users to interact with a game that felt like it was hand made by the users interacting with it. With LBP2 we added a ton of different options that allowed players to create completely new and varied experiences, upping the ante considerably from the first game. I think now, the Play.Create.Share idea holds up stronger than ever. People are embracing the create aspect more and playing around with the in-game tools, and now with Vita, we’ve made Play.Create.Share more accessible than ever. We think that with the standard of game creation possible on LBP Vita, many experiences will be comparable to standalone games. If you look at LBP 1 and LBP Vita, you can see that there is a massive jump. We’re not just doing the same thing for a handheld. We’re pushing the whole experience forward.

TGL: Can you give us some idea of how LittleBigPlanet Vita interacts and compliments the handheld’s unique functionality?

TO’C: When we first decided to bring LBP to Vita, we managed to get our hands on an early example of the technology and immediately we were impressed, especially with the rear touch pad. What was interesting was that as soon as we started playing around with the Vita, it felt really natural and really felt like it could accommodate its own LBP experience. LBP really feels like it belongs on Vita. For all the unique tools in there, it’s almost certainly feels like it was built for Vita. There are levels on LBP Vita that just wouldn’t work on LBP PS3. The experience is unique to Vita. Now with the Vita controls you can use new controlled methods to create levels and bring your game to life in new ways not immediately possible when creating on PS3. Now for example, you can create touch base and tilt base games that you just can’t do on PS3. That’s why this experience is best suited for Vita.

TGL: How important is it to be able to bring everything we’ve come to know of LBP’s online community to Vita? How does this added mobility change or enhance the experience?

TO’C: When we first set out to make the game, we were kind of programmed into making a story based game. It’s only after you play with the tools that you realise just how much you can do on Vita. The games you can create in LBP on PS3 are awesome. But now we’re seeing these incredible handheld games on the Vita version. Nowadays, people are used to using smart phones and smart touch devices with games that offer smaller limited mobile gameplay experiences. With LBP Vita, we can now offer those same smaller handheld experiences, as well as the bigger levels and games that you’ve already touched on with LBP on PS3. With 3G and WiFi now too, LBP Vita allows you to pretty much do anything you want and keeps the LBP community with you everywhere you go. LBP Vita is a really complex piece of software. To be able to bring this to Vita and a handheld device is a real triumph for everyone and it’s a great credit to everyone on the development team responsible for making the game.

Another thing about the Vita that’s worth mentioning is, that as much as people love LBP and Sackboy and everything the universe represents, we’ve learned and accepted from LBP on PS3 that people like to create games that kind of distance themselves from LBP’s unique identity. We’re completely cool with this. People can and will do whatever they want because LBP allows them to do that. Now that you can create these new small byte size game experiences, LBP feels like it fits more on a handheld than it ever did on a console. People play these small games every day on their smart phones. Now you can create your own small games on LBP Vita. You don’t need any programming knowledge to build these games, you can just jump in and start building – such is the game’s accessibility.

TGL: Is the create element on Vita the game changer for LBP?

TO’C: It’s great because all of our developers, programmers and key community people, some of whom we’ve gone on to employ, have really embraced the mobile create possibilities. Before you’d go home, load up your PS3, create for a while and then it might be another 24 hours or a few days before you go back to complete your creation or create something completely new. Now with the Vita in your pocket or in your bag, you can just jump in for a few minutes at a time when you’re free and create and build something new or interact with the online community to see something or play something new that you hadn’t seen before. If you weren’t into creating on PS3, we think you might be more inclined to do so on the PlayStation Vita.

TGL: What are the main differences between LBP on Vita and PS3 besides the unique Vita controls?

TO’C: There’s a massive list of creative differences. We’ve tried to make things easier to build for one. There are things you could build on LBP on PS3 that were really difficult, but now on the Vita version, we’re giving you new tools to make those once difficult items much easier to build. Then there’s the memoriser tool. That’s a game changer. It allows you to save anywhere you want in whatever game you build. If you wanted to create a 50 hour RPG in LBP Vita, you can. There’s nothing stopping you now. On top of that, you have all the new Vita functionality, like front and rear touch, the cameras and tilt. They all seem like obvious things but you couldn’t do these on PS3. We’ve brought over the best bits of LBP on PS3, some tools from the PSP version and now with all the unique options on Vita, we think LBP Vita is the most definitive version of LBP yet.

TGL: LBP strikes me as the kind of game that is difficult to plan for post release. You kind of have to see what the community is doing with the game and with the tools and then you guys can react accordingly with new content or new features or whatever…..

TO’C: You’re right. Our approach to post release content and features is quite structured but can be organic too. We have an incredible community and we always reach out to them for feedback. We have some idea of what they will do with the game before it gets released but sometimes you can’t prepare. We can’t and don’t stop developing the game once it comes out. We will always listen and react to the community and if, for example, they say they want new tools to do “X,Y,Z”, we’ll certainly consider it.

TGL: Vita and PS3 versions of LittleBigPlanet aside for a moment, what do you think we can expect from LittleBigPlanet in the future? There’s lots of talk now of the next-generation at the moment. Where can LittleBigPlanet go from here?

TO’C: A lot of different games have tried to emulate and recreate what we have done with LBP, and they just haven’t come close to what we have done. The brand is extremely strong, now more than ever before. It’s been four years since the first game and no one has caught up to us. You have to look at the strength of the brand. LBP Karting is a good example. That will certainly draw people into the brand who may never have played a LBP game before because they love racing and karting games. Our focus for LBP right now is getting the Vita version finished and out there and continuing to support LBP2 on PS3.

Tarsier Studios: LittleBigPlanet Vita interview

It’s a LittleBigPlanet after all as we found the Swedish developer Tarsier Studios – the people behind LittleBigPlanet Vita – right in our own backyard. We took the opportunity to ask them a few questions about the game.

PSM: Tell us about the planet Carnivalia and the story in the campaign of LittleBigPlanet Vita.

Tarsier Studios: Carnivalia is a travelling fairground planet. It wanders around the universe spreading joy and laughter, but the story in LBP Vita picks up at a point in Carnivalia’s history when things have gone bad. At the beginning of the story, all we know is that a mysterious character called The Puppeteer is responsible for Carnivalia’s ills, and it is up to Sackboy to stop him.

PSM: With touch controls you get a completely new dimension in both gameplay and creation mode. What does the camera and microphone add to the mix?

Tarsier Studios: Having a microphone built into the system can be very useful for players. There is no longer any need to go out and buy a headset, you can just start talking to your friends. It is still possible to communicate by waving your little Sackboy’s arms around, but it is definitely easier just to talk to your friends directly. And you can of course still record sound and play it back in game using the Magic Mouth players are familiar with from the previous LBP titles.

Making custom stickers is a lot easier thanks to the camera. Whenever you come across something that you think might work well in your level, you just need to point your Vita at it, take a picture of it using the in-game snapshot tool, and just like that it’s in your game and you can apply to any surface or even your Sackboy.

PSM: How will the game utilize the NEAR app?

Tarsier Studios: You will be able to challenge friends and other people close to you to beat your highscores or beat their challenges. You can also discover players close to you and check out their levels and highscores using the in-game NEAR search feature.

PSM: The Memorizer tool is an exciting new addition to the create part of LittleBigPlanet, can you tell us a bit about it?

Tarsier Studios: The Memoriser really is a powerful tool. It’s hard to come up with a good analogy for the Memoriser and how it works, but you could compare it to cookies in web browsers. Essentially what it does is save and recall data fed into it. This is very useful to creators because it remembers all inputs even when you leave the level. That means that you can use it to create save points that allow players to return to the level and start where they left off. But that’s not all! If you give multiple Memorisers the same label they will share data among themselves even if they are in different levels. Allowing you to build a system where actions in the first level can have an effect in a later level.

PSM: Will you be able to share costumes and other content between PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 3?

Tarsier Studios: Yes, any DLC you buy for LBP PS Vita will be compatible with LBP2 and vice versa. You won’t have to buy a costume twice, if you own on one system you can use it on the other system as well.

PSM: The franchise strives to be a “platform for games”, what are some of the different genres you’ll be able to create?

Tarsier Studios: If you set your mind to it you can create almost anything you want. In the beta alone the variety ranged from classic platformers, to iOS style games, real-time strategy games and completely unique experiences. Thanks to the Memoriser, creators will also be able to create longer, more story driven games or mini-games with multiple levels that only unlock after you completed the previous level.

PSM: Will you support asynchronous play, offline and online?

Tarsier Studios: The ethos of play, create, and share is obviously core to the LittleBigPlanet experience, and much of the functionality in this game dovetails perfectly with the concept of asynchronous play. For one, players will be able download community levels to their system and play them wherever they are and whenever they feel like it, even if they can’t connect to the Internet. Players can of course always try to beat highscores on any story and community levels, as well as beat score challenges they received over NEAR.

PSM: You recently won The Gazelle, an award for the fastest growing company in Sweden. How has this impacted Tarsier Studios and what kind of challenges have you faced so far?

Tarsier Studios: Haha, it hurts me to correct the facts slightly here as The Gazelle we received was for the fastest growing company in the state/region, which in itself however is an awesome achievement.

Growing a company like Tarsier Studios from scratch with only non-professionals without previous industry experience in such an incredibly demanding and tough industry has been an enormous challenge and if it wasn’t for the great talent and “never-give-up”- attitude within the team it would never have been possible.

A lot of people and organizations outside the company have also been contributing to the success of the company and The Gazelle was a great thing to in a sense be able to “give back” to them. The Gazelle not being a game industry award only appreciated by developers and gamers but rather a prestigious business award recognized by everyone in the business/financial sector gave many of our local financial backers and sponsors some great articles to slam on boardroom tables going “You remember those guys I made us bet on a few years back? How about them apples!”. Our story will hopefully be of help for other start-ups in the gaming industry as well as in others when it comes to getting financial aid and other forms of support until they too have had a chance to prove themselves.

To our dedicated staff the best recognition came earlier this year with the “Studio of the Year” award from the Swedish Games Industry that came with the motivation “Through hard work and high quality productions, they have grown from a small and unknown Studio to a large and proven one, all by themselves.”

PSM: You started out by doing costumes, DLC and the home space for PlayStation 3. How did the collaboration start and how did it lead up to you developing LittleBigPlanet Vita?

Tarsier Studios: As we were working on Rag Doll Kung Fu™: Fists of Plastic taking Mark Healey’s much appreciated PC game to PlayStation™Network in a completely new re-vamped version for the PlayStation audience we got in contact with him and the rest of Media Molecule.

As he liked what we were doing with Rag Doll and everyone appreciated the art style and quality of the visuals in the game we soon got an invitation to help out with art assets for LittleBigPlanet.

A few years later after getting more and more involved in the franchise a late evening call came through from SCEE XDev with the news that Mm wanted to pursue new ventures and that they as well as SCEE wanted the ones with the best understanding of the LBP Universe and brand to take over the reins. And as it were, it turned out to be us.

PSM: Was there anything from the development of ‘Rag Doll Kung Fu: Fists of Plastic‘ that had any impact on LittleBigPlanet Vita in terms of things you have learned?

Tarsier Studios: As RagDoll was our first game we shipped as a studio the knowledge of the different aspects of game development, the different phases during the production cycle, risks etc. were all things many of us brought with us into the development. But, the scopes of the games were extremely different, the platforms were different, many of the staff were new and had to learn some of the hard-earned first -timer lessons for themselves and even though I’d like to say that the rest of us had learnt from our lessons of RagDoll, we did still fall into a couple of familiar traps this time as well due to stress, pressure and ambition. All our previous work with the LittleBigPlanet franchise as well as that of our partners, subcontractors and last but not least the work of the community would however prove tremendous assets in the development of LittleBigPlanet™ PS VITA™.

PSM: How is the development divided between you and the UK studio Double Eleven Limited?

Tarsier Studios: We are responsible for the whole experience. Everything you see, hear and play in the game is designed and created by Tarsier. Double 11 are in charge of developing the technology to make all of this run on the PlayStation? Vita, which they have done masterfully!

PSM: LittleBigPlanet is a huge franchise, with huge expectations from the community. In what ways do you interact with the community and what have you learnt so far from the Beta?

Tarsier Studios: You are right, the community is one of the most important aspects of any LBP game. So we try to make it as easy as possible for them to reach us. Fans can always get in touch with us through e-mail or via Twitter (@TarsierStudios) and we will respond as soon as we can. Our Community Coordinator is visiting all major LBP fansites daily to check if there are any issues we need to take care of and to see what the community would like to see in LBP Vita in the future.

From our perspective, the Beta was a great success. We got a lot of valuable feedback and it was just amazing to see all the unique creations made by the community, mere days after the Beta started! It took less than four weeks for the community to create over 1000 levels! We really can’t wait to see what they will build once they have the full game in their hands.

PSM: Third party developers were having a difficult time getting to know the PlayStation 3 technology. Having experience on both platforms, how is the PlayStation Vita to work with?

Tarsier Studios: Most of the technical side of the game was handled by our co-developer, Double 11. The fact they have managed to squeeze the whole PS3 experience plus a whole lot more onto the PS Vita is a massive achievement and shows how powerful and flexible the platform is. From a design and art point of view, designing for a handheld definitely is different. With the smaller screen you have to pay more attention to details like shapes, camera zoom in levels, as well as the average play time and suchlike. We use the same tools to create levels as the ones that are available in the game, so that of course is also a difference from creating on the PlayStation? 3.

LittleBigPlanet Vita will see the light of day in Europe on September 19th and in North America on September 25th and we can’t wait to put our grubby hands on it!

Just wanted to share this with you all. I just find it kinda cute. ESRB rating comments for LBPVita:

LittleBigPlanet Vita (PS Vita) – E (Mild Cartoon Violence)

Summary: This is a side-scrolling platformer game in which players help a small doll (Sackboy) save his world from an evil puppeteer. Players run and jump through whimsical environments, avoid obstacles (e.g., spike traps, electrified platforms), and use various contraptions (e.g., Grabinator gloves, a grappling hook) to defeat “cartoony” creatures and larger bosses; enemies generally break apart and/or disappear amid puffs of smoke. In one boxing mini-game (viewed from overhead), players control small robots that punch each other;“dizzy star” effects indicate damage.

I wasn't thinking of him in particular but I couldn't help thinking of how beautifully naive that description is in light of what the community has done

I want to know how he/she got the train to follow the tracks. Anyone got any ideas? My guess is that he had invisible tracks that invisible wheels (bolted to the back of the train carts) are stuck between. Then when the tracks switched so did the invisible ones. Combine with some 'local space' mover magic and you got yourself a fine-looking choochoo train : )2012-09-07 11:11:00

I want to know how he/she got the train to follow the tracks. Anyone got any ideas? I think he fixed a follower that follow the tags. But what is interessing is, how did he make the train turn? I guess maybe he used a tag sensor to activate a gyroscope, so that it will turn.2012-09-07 11:15:00

Hallm3 has the answer above. I've been working on a similar effect with LBP2 using the very same answer Hallm3 offered, but I was rather hoping there was an alternative. I forgot about the dephysicalizer though, so that should help reduce the amount of layers you need to pull this off. The only thing that's throwing me off is the tight turns. Given that it's probably a four wheeled vehicle with a mover set to local space, I find that there is an optimum available turn angle. Any steeper and the wheels can't cope with the strain... That's why I was wondering if it used a different technique

This is a clear playthough of the the first 5 minutes. You might want to turn the sound off or take your shoes off because wearing shoes could break your screen when you kick it.

I play all demo levels and there are no story spoilers except first level with story introduction. All others levels is just the control tutorials very similar to LBP2, two mini games and one game in arcade section. There are no any others story spoilers in demo. So I think this demo is perfect - it shows graphics quality and nice decorations, demonstrate many cool controls methods and almost don't open any story secrets 2012-09-09 17:45:00

If I remember correctly there were 3 ways of moving your head in this game: The Sixaxis tilt, back touch pad or front touch pad (Which are all useful at different times, really).

I seem to remember the Sixaxis tilt feeling a bit odd at times, but I think the head's "default" position would calibrate itself to however you're holding your PS Vita. I played a few times while lying in bed and it felt fine.

I'd need someone with the demo to be able to confirm though, since it's been a while since the beta.

This always happened to me in the beta! I used to just seat on my chair,With my vita tilted kinda back while I'm holding it on the table,And sackboy would get stuck with his head down,And then i wouldent be able to move his head any more(A bug) I'm not sure if the whole thing was a bug,Because i don't think i used the vita in a way that would make his head go like that,But i do hope they made some improvements in that area...

Yes, sackboy head position depends on PS vita tilt, so if you will lay back and play, than sackboy will look down constantly.

In Demo Sackboy moves his head with front touch screen. So when you move some objects with touch he follow his head for its movoment.

BTW in demo there are no any using of rear touch pad at all. So maybe it is just off for all demo levels.

I'm no longer going to be updating the first post because it seems pointless now it's been released. I'm just going to be posting the youtube videos here if they are of any worth. Feel free to do the same . If you are still not convinced that this is a free App store, watch this!

Yes, I know, but I'm not posting that up or watching it!

Best quality first playthough video yet, but get ready to shout at the fool playing it:

There's nothing in these videos that I haven't seen before. I'm avoiding a LOT of videos that are up. They show levels beyond the tutorial section.

It looks as if LBPVita makes good use of the Live area too:

Sony don't know how to advertise to save their lives. Have a word with Nintendo please and remember, kids play it too.

And the big draw for this game is?:

This is a Vita advert, not a LBPVita Advert

How slick is this though:

Dear lord. I hope the quality I've seen so far from the community doesn't represent what's going to be there when I finally get the game.2012-09-18 19:19:00

Lol, I just like the little skydiver costume, sorry. Thought I'd throw that out there.
But yeah, I've been hearing a lot about the advertising. I have an idea though:
I think we should take all of the billboards in the world...
and put BUY VITA on every one of them.
Genius.

Its already going up to three hundred levels published, and alot are just random crap as always. There's some good platformers, the expected Fruit Ninja , and a few wasteful Hi LBpVita community levels and Bubble Trophy fodder. I'm sure there's some gems in there too, but who knows. You see, being early is not all its cracked up to be.

Sweet! Some beta levels were transferred to the full game. I'm gonna have to play through my Constructination Trouble again... I kinda missed it, despite how rushed it was. Although it is kinda embarrassing to look at. <3

Anyone know how they decided which ones were kept? Mine wasn't Team Picked, so that wasn't it. I'm thinking maybe it was the ones that were most played or something like that. I know not all the beta levels were transferred.
