PSVita Price May Be Cut!

By Brandon Sinclair of GameSpot:

The PlayStation Vita has barely been on shelves for a single day, but there's already talk of a price cut for the system. Research firm Strategy Analytics released a note today projecting that the PS Vita will sell 12.4 million units worldwide in 2012, "assuming a price cut sometime this year."

The Vita could be big at $250, but how much bigger would it be at $180? (http://www.gamespot.com/pages/image_viewer/index.php?single=1&path=2011%2F290%2Fpsvitabox_01169_screen.jpg&caption=The%2BVita%2Bcould%2Bbe%2Bbig%2Bat%2B%2524 250%252C%2Bbut%2Bhow%2Bmuch%2Bbigger%2Bwould%2Bit% 2Bbe%2Bat%2B%2524180%253F&blog=1&cvr=C2I%2F)
If Sony can get the average retail price of a PS Vita down to $180, the firm expects the system's hardware sales to reach $2.2 billion. Currently, the Wi-Fi model of the PS Vita sells for $250, while the 3G-enabled hardware goes for $300. The handheld's closest competitor, the 3DS, launched last year at a $250 price point, but Nintendo slashed that to $170 after initial sales proved disappointing.
Strategy Analytics pointed out that when the PS Vita launched in Japan in December, initial sales were strong. The system topped 300,000 units sold in its first week but has since dropped to as few as 12,000 units sold on a weekly basis. The firm believes that the system's North American and European sales totals will follow that pattern as well, the same strong start and quick decline experienced by the 3DS last year.
"Despite the solid design and strong processing power, it is challenging to convince consumers to buy a dedicated game console above the $200 price range in today's economic environment as Nintendo has learnt," the firm said. "Sales of 3G models will be a particular challenge as it demands a $50 premium and additional data plan charges and in the long run is likely to represent only a small portion of total PlayStation Vita sales."

I'm planning on buying one soon. But I'm thinking it may get cut around the release of LBPV, so should I wait?2012-06-06 18:51:00

i'd maybe would think about getting one if they drop it down to 180$ as said above. but i don't wanna pay 250$ for one. so i'll wait until it's below 200$ regardless how long that may or may not be. *mew2012-06-06 18:52:00

Nope. (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-06-06-sony-says-no-to-ps-vita-price-cut)

Unless they're saying that so that the people who are about to buy the console don't wait until the price cut.

Darn! I just picked mine up Wed. Oh well, after my LBP2, move accessories, and PS3 in-store trade-in credit reached a whopping $230, I decided to get one!! Bold, I know, but what can I say... It's a nice console! Plus when you're old and married like me, having the television freed up in the living room is a good thing! 2012-06-08 15:44:00

Dont be darning yourself yet, you should read the thread first. Anyway, Considering the awful sales of the thing, Im very surprised they havent lowered the price... It is rather outrageous, considering you have to buy an overpriced memory card and a game along with it.

you know what's funny? ps vita wifi model and ps3 = the same cost of the ps3 when first launched. considering that lbp2 going to have cross controller dlc, that's expensive dlc for playing lbp2 dlc. same with the move except like 150$ for the whole set + 3 more controllers to have full 4 players local.2012-06-09 17:09:00

Got mine used, plus Amazon was having a sale on Memory cards!

So my Vita + a 4gb card came out to about $210. Not bad!

Also, guys, Motorstorm R/C is free on the store for a limited time, so you might wanna grab that if you have no game. I'm not entirely sure if the offer is available in Europe, however.

I'm buying one Wednesday from GameStop! I also reserved a $15 doller memory card. I have $30 dollar gift card. And like 20 trade ins. Including ps2 controllers and Guitar Hero guitars with the game. And many other games.2012-06-11 04:32:00

Bought mine last week for ?200 + free 4 gig memory card. I had to pretty much stay inside, do nothing and go without food for a month just to save enough money to buy a console which, once I had it, I realised there were no games I even wanted to play on it. I rushed to buy one because I was hoping to get in the lbp beta but that didn't happen, so if they drop the price by the time lbp hits retail then I'll be extremely peed off since I might as well have waited a couple of months, saved money and avoided the financial hardship I just put myself through.

I have no doubt that lbp alone will be worth the Vita's price, but it's quite annoying that I have a new console with nothing to play on it in the mean time. The launch titles look like absolute **** IMO, and I suspect that the Vita is doomed to fail from the start, but as long as the lbp vita community is strong then I don't really care whether they release any other good titles for it or not in the future, since lbp is the only reason I bought one anyway.

i would recommend Golden Abyss and the up and coming Gravity Rush. Persona 4: The Golden and Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention are FANTASTIC and well worth the investment (if you like RPGs)2012-06-11 13:14:00

that is true, but Golden Abyss is just so darn good you won't want to stop playing it. there are more secrets to find and the graphics will blow you away. it's up to you of course, but if you like Uncharted as a series you just can't pass on it

you might want to try Resistance as well then. regardless of some of the reviews, it's excellent. the problem with reviewers at the moment is that they seem to be comparing Vita games to PS3 games and not other handhelds. everyone i've spoken to tells me that the bad reviews of Resistance are ridiculous.

and by the way, Golden Abyss is as much a shooter as any other Uncharted game... perhaps more so

I'll have to think about it. I can't buy Resistance by myself because it is rated M. I'm only 14. I would need my parents to buy it.

Does Golden Abyss have a lot of shooting? Or does Unit 13 gave more?

resistance definitely has more. try out the demo. but GA had stacks of shooting too, it was just broken up occasional with platforming and puzzle solving. finding all the hidden stuff is a game in itself!

Unit 13 has more shooting. It's a shooter and Uncharted is more like action-adventure-shooter. I still prefer Uncharted. I'm a great fan of the series.

in that case you simply MUST buy uncharted 1. you can get it for next to nothing second hand and you'll be blown away. then when you play two, you'll be picking your jaw off the ground. these games are a must for any PS3 owner!!
