Watch Dogs

Archive: 7 posts

Not too much information so far, just what I gleaned from the trailer and gameplay footage.

Watchdogs is a new IP from Ubisoft. Probably could be considered action-adventure with possible RPG elements tho the latter is completely conjecture. "Futuristic espionage thriller" based on a headline i just read.

They've been working on it for around 2 years. Easiest thing would be to watch the vid but here's a rundown.

The concept seems to be that the player is a person who basically has the ability to hack any hackable electronic device in the nearby area. This includes phones, traffic lights and security cameras. That's really bare bones on the concept though as it goes deeper, to include the fact that the entire city is controlled by a central OS, which controls power grids, traffic light schedules etc etc. And the player can hack things the ctOS has control over. It also uses the concept that all data is connected to the point that profiling people based on their networking habits is possible: likelihood to fight/run, personal information about debts etc.

Gameplay seems like a futuristic Assassin's Creed in ways. It seems to be set in current day. The icons that appear over people are a little reminiscent of the Animus. The gameplay shown showed the player in a big city, night, raining. Gained entry to a art gallery by hacking the security guy's phone. Player walked inside. There was a cut-scene with a NPC, seemed important to the story. Voice-acting and facial animations especially were impressive.

Then came profiling, the player could pinpoint anyone in the crowd and their name, DOB etc came up along with other pertinent data including HIV+ status, debts, loans, job. Security came up with chances of become violent.

Later the player took down a security guy. Kind of like Assassin's Creed. Went outside. Target was coming so he changed the traffic lights and caused a big pile-up. Next there was a firefight was a VERY good cover system and gunplay. Then he accessed the target and I'll let ya watch what happened.

After this, the camera changed to a security cam and then to a totally different player who was looking at the security cam footage in real time. He was on a roof nearby. And his job was to keep the other guy safe.

Then it panned out and showed other players all over the city.

The most impressive thing about the game was the scope and that there was no element that seemed weak from graphics to concept to gameplay.

It seems that it might be a persistent world where players directly impact on one anothers missions. It's hard to tell... but it certainly seems like this is one to watch!

Seems very interesting. Were those other "agents" also players? Is there any word on that? As for the similarities to AC, I can see how people would come to this conclusion, but it is really a very common UI set up. The protagonist seems a little clever at best, other than that it's all in his gadgets. The way he dispatched that security was about the least stealthy approach ever. 2012-06-05 01:05:00

Well the e3 camera kinda panned out when it showed the other player and there was another guy with a controller on the other side of the stage. And then the guy start running and hopped over a fence and stuff. And then it ended. So yeah, looks like they're also players.

It looks great. A great concept, and it looks like they'll be able to deliver. The graphics, voice acting, controls and... well everything. Should be one to keep an eye on. When do you reckon a likely release date would be? 2012, or 2013?2012-06-05 16:09:00

When I saw the title my initial thought was that the game wouldn't be good. Then I watched the video.
