Should I stay up all night?

Archive: 47 posts

Ok, my internal clock is reallymessed up at the moment..

My body thinks it's 12am at 5am, and I'm waking up at 4pm lol.

So, should I stayup all night, and get a very good sleeptomorrow night to get everything back on track?

I'm just worried it'll make it worse.. Oh yeah, I have until wednesday :/

Yep, that's what I do. Go straight through into the next day, then if you get really tired in the next day then take a 2 hour nap, then you can sleep at a normal time. ^_^2009-01-05 03:52:00

For me it's kinda weird. Once I reach a certain time, my internal timer resets and I'm no longer tired. ^_^2009-01-05 03:54:00

Yeah, I've gotten that before. Problem is, you crash like a bandicoot on the next day and fall asleep for 17 hours. Maybe just me.

I'm such a rousing jest, aren't I?

It's also pretty dangerous if you have work, college, school etc. If you don't have the option of sleeping, your body will not be best of pals with you.

Less my body, more my mind. The first time I pulled an all-nighter, which was at a birthday party, I wasn't even sure what I was doing. I was so confused. lol XD

I generally don't have trouble with this sort of thing I seem to automatically readjust (but that could be from constant traveling when I was very young and still today) but my sister does... so she just stays up all night... which generally means I have to stay up as well... haha but it's ok I just hook up the playstation and play whatever... 2009-01-05 05:05:00

You'll hit the phase where you'll be awake enough not to want to sleep, but too tired to actually do much.2009-01-05 07:02:00

Umm... I have schoool... And I know I'm going to be up all night, I have to hit the sheets at like 12... Then I'll be awake watching TV till like 3. Finally get to sleep, wake up at 6. And to be honest, I feel better when I get less sleep. The more sleep I get, the slower it is for me to start the day. It's really weird...

I also have no problem staying up all night, I usually re adjust perfectly.

I have an alternative suggestion to just staying up a long time, and that's to adjust gradually. I've put the details here, but it's a long read, so I've gone and put it in spoilers. Be aware that you have been warned.

I have this problem quite often, but it's different to most people.

I have an old injury which causes my muscles to cramp uncontrollably. It's very painful when it gets bad, and it's hard to use, say, my right arm sometimes due to pain and spasms.

Surprisingly enough, this can make it hard to sleep at will, especially when the pain is so bad I can't sleep. I tend to just wait until I am exhausted and then go to sleep then, even if I still have pain. It just gets to a point where exhaustion overwhelms the pain which is over-riding the sleep.

So I've found two ways to deal with it for myself, as the real world tends to do stuff when the sun is up, and it's important to interact with the read world.

The quick solution is to do what is polled, stay up a really long time, say 30 hours or so. This is one way to deal with stuff like jetlag. You get so tired that you want to sleep.

But this is not the best of solutions for myself in the long run. The body is still kind of use to going to sleep at the wrong time, and I still sometimes have pain keeping me up.

The slower solution is to intentionally stay up a bit later at a time. Say going to sleep 2 hours later every day.

I'm pushing the time I get tired back a bit further each day. By the end of the week I'm quite tired indeed, and at the right times. It tends to be a longer term fix to sleeping at the wrong time as the internal clock is more re-inforced into the correct position rather than having one big whack to try and fix it.

It's not the easiest of solutions to do, however. You need at least around one week to do it, and you may loose a few social engagements in the process.

Say you have something at 6pm. That's fine when you get up in the middle of the day. It's not so fine if you are trying to slowly adjust your body clock and that's the time you want to sleep.

I find if I just jump ahead and keep commitments and skip the plan, it often makes the whole long term shifting thing harder.

Three final points to note:

The most I find I can adjust my clock is 3 hours a day. The slower I take though the better the adjustment, but it can give me a little bit of space to plan in advanced for something things, slowing down or speeding up the adjustments to try and get some commitments in.

It's important to try and keep "normal" meal commitments when you are adjusting. If you are awake till midday, have your normal breakfast. The more your body can adjust to a routine, the more it can stick to it.

Finally, and this is the most important point. Wake up when you alarm goes, and know how much sleep you normally need. The average sleep span for an adult is 8.5 hours. Teenagers need more than that from a physiological development point of view, about 10.5 hours. They often don't get this. Some people need less, however. A friend of mine only sleeps 3 hours a night. If he sleeps more, he just does a lot less. So a few rare people need less. But know what you normally need, 6 hours, 8, 10... and try and set your alarm clock to this and STICK TO IT.

It's usually staying up too late too often that gets you into a whacked out sleep time in the first place, that is if it's not because of work or illness. Getting up when your alarm goes and keeping active throughout the day will help you keep a normal sleep routine, and try and get to sleep at an appropriate time. Don't have "one more try". Set a sleep alarm if you have to, just like waking up, and be willing to turn off the machine and move on. There is always another day.

So to summarise, consider adjusting slowly, consider having a sleep alarm, and be willing to stop things at an appropriate time so you don't get your sleep cycle out of whack in the first place.

That pretty much explains me, the less I have the more active I am... Any explanation of this? Seems to me you know a lot about this kind of stuck, or I'll just ask my pyschology teacher tomorrow.

NOOOOOOO!!! Don't do it man! It sucked And it'll put you to sleep loll

Personally I just went through this. I'm currently jobless (just finished school and the economy is making it real hard to find a good job in my field /off topic) and so I have no schedule to speak of. However I hate going to bet super late and I couldn't kick the habit. So I started going to bed later and later to try and exhaust myself. I was going to bed anywhere between 7AM and 10AM. Finally 2 nights ago I just naturally fell asleep around 9PM and woke up feeling refreshed around 3AM, no alarm clock nothing. Same thing last night, woke up around 4AM. Feels great and it seems to be a good system.

Here's the problem, everybody's system works differently. In your case Bob, it doesn't work to stay up and Miff if you're like him you're going to be a zombie for a while! If so, then you'll know this isn't the solution for you and you'll have to try something else.

BAD idea! You'll fall asleep the second those drinks wear off, and that happens alot faster when you're exhausted.

Lol, darn. If I may suggest, don't take a nap if you try this again. Tough it out as long as you possibly can and then go to bed, regardless of whether it's too early or not. The exaustion might just reset you without you even noticing or expecting it too. That's what worked for me. One day I was going to bed at 7AM getting up at 3PM, withing the same day I go to bed at 9PM and get up at 3AM... totally random! But it seems to be working so far!

I'm actually a Registered Nurse, I just have not worked as a nurse for a few years. I don't really understand why some people need less sleep than normal. It's a very rare thing for it to happen. Winston Churchill, the Prime Minister of England during World War II, was famous not only for winning WWII but he was also a person who had very, very little sleep.

Most people do NOT have this situation though. But some do. My friend who only sleeps for 3 hours a night I don't think was too worried about things. He was leading a conference once and being a responsible person went to sleep at a sensible hour and tried to get the full 8 hours sleep most people do. After a few days he was just terrible though, his concentration was all shot and his performance was awful. When he went back to his normal 3 hours sleep, he picked right back up again.

Psychology is more about mental disorders. I'd think a physiology lecturer might be able to help more in this matter as to explaining why.

This was basically the solution I suggested in my spoiler quotes, just with less words. Remember that while doing this, it's important to try and build into a routine when you get near the end and start sleeping normal hours.

Stay active during the day, have a routine to get to sleep, and be willing to turn away from whatever is keeping you up late. There is always tomorrow, and almost everything can wait then. Especially if it's LBP or posting on these forums.

Actually it's TV that gets the better of me lol. I don't like to leave a program halfway through xD

And then, another one starts that I like, so I roll over, try and face the wall, but then something funny happens, so I roll over again to find out, and it just goes on like that for the next 3 hours :/
