Half Life/The Orange Box!

Archive: 29 posts

For those of you who don't know about the Half Life series (very few I'd imagine), you play as Gordon Freeman, a scientist, who has to stop an alien invasion when an experiment goes extremely wrong. That is basically the intro and story to the first game. (yes, it gets much deeper and tons more interesting than that, but i'm not going to go into that yet). It's an FPS game, but it's far from any other FPS out there you've ever played.

Now, if you haven't already played HL2 and onwards, then I cannot stress enough just how much you should go out and buy The Orange Box. Seriously. In short, HL2 is the best FPS game out there. The story is just fantastic, and you always want to push on and find out what happens next. It includes epic battles, great vehicle sections, puzzles which don't murder the brain - but make you think, and let's not forget Boss fights! If you're going to pick it up, you don't have to know much about HL1. But here is everything to the story there is in HL1 if you want it. So - SPOILER:
You are Gordon Freeman, and when you are conducting an experiment you rip open a gateway to another universe (I think!), and from then you go through the base (named Black Mesa) to finally attempt to stop these aliens pouring through. You end up going to the Alien world, which is brilliant in itself and a great twist, and you succeed in destroying the main creature (i believe, something along those lines. I havn't played it in ages). Earth is partly saved. You are then confronted by a man (who you can see in the game many times, but can't hurt him) who wants to hire you. You accept, or otherwise get killed. And that's it.
In HL2, you are woken up by this man, and are set to do another job. You are at some point in the future, but some humans and some aliens work together, while others still go against humans. There is a very strict military basis in place, and from there on you uncover what's going on, and how to save the human race basically. If anyone thinks I'm wrong, go ahead and corrext me on anything I say.

If I was to rate The Orange Box, it would be 9.9/10. There's a ton of gameplay in it due to having 3 HL games, and the inclusion of the unmissable Portal game and a very fun unique online game, Team Fortress 2.

So who here has this? Or has gone through it on PC? Most I'd imagine, but I just want to talk about the brilliance of it, and just general talk of it too.

I completed (but not played) HL2 first, then Ep 1 (both on PC), then went back and did HL1. The other day I finally bought The Orange Box and i just completed HL2 Ep 2. Once again, amazing game. Anyone who doesn't have this should go out and buy it now! It's cheap too! These games are far better than Resistance/CoD/Halo etc. The replay value is high too.

So, do you guys like it? How high would you rate it? (or low...? )

EDIT: Oh and one other thing guys - have you heard of this Black Mesa PC mod for HL1?

One word for it: EpiclyawesomelyamazinglyWOOOOOOOOOOOOT!

First game I got for my PS3 a few months ago. I finished Half-life 2 on the PC but this time I got to play it without mind-numbingly bad lag, yey!

I still haven't even got to Episode One yet, too many games have gotten in the way. Is it any good?

EDIT: How high would I rate it? 9/10 easily. It's one of my favourite FPS's. I love how it's set up as one long trek instead of "mission one", "mission two" sort of thing. It may be linear but somehow it still feels really adventurous.

Well, the rest of HL2 is awesome. Ep 1 is pretty good, but is all based in the city. And Ep 2 is excellent, with some real good action and puzzle parts! My fave FPS experiences

The Orange Box is pretty **** near the best value in gaming right now - I see both the Xbox and PS3 versions of it for $20 in retail stores and on Amazon. Half Life 2 is good, but Portal is of course the real star of the package.2009-01-05 04:38:00

Agreed. The following sums up my feelings on the Orange Box:

1. At full retail price, the Orange Box was amazing value. On any kind of sale or offer, it is even better.

2. Half life 2, the extra episodes and Team Fortess 2 are great games.

3. Portal is my 3rd favorite game of all time. I would reccomend Portal at full retail price to anyone, so throw in 4 other games and you're golden.

4. The 360 version of the Orange box is superior. I'm sorry to say it on a fan site for a PS3 game, but it's just flat out true, it performs better.

5. Buy it.

I bought it, it wasn't my type of game. I LOVED Portal though. Seriously, the best out of all the 5 included in The Orange Box. GlaDOs for the win 2009-01-05 13:47:00

I have it for PS3 and got about half-way through HL2. I beat Portal (about 4/5 times) and thought the gameplay was amazing but didn't find it as funny as many others did. I really liked the last section though.

HL2 is good, I just don't like FPS much. It is one of the better FPSs I've played though. I usually play them for 20 minutes and stop.

I almost beat HL1 on the PC but stopped playing during the last boss... not sure why exactly.

i have to go buy this. I hate to sound like an advertisement but, GO BUY THE GAME IT'S $15 THIS WEEK AT CIRCUIT CITY! Do you understand how awesome that 15 bucks becomes. You get 5 different experiences from the price of like a three year old PC game. GO,GO,GO! (I'll be joining you). I have rented this game so many times, now that it's 15$ it's time that i bought it and enjoy it over and over and over. (I've already beaten HL1 11 times)2009-01-05 21:08:00

yeah i liked Portal most likely the best (my favorite part is at the end when the computer sings that song, funniest thing ever and CAAAAKE lol), i can not seem to get a handle on the game TF2, and i got stuck on a puzzle in HL1 (so HAAARD and the puzzles are confusing, well atleast for me and i am a really smart guy) and gave up, and did not want to continue to the next part of the story, i wanted to do it in chronological order if you know what i mean

Cheers!

Edit: i wonder what would happen if they combined free running, with portal, with a large open world... Mt. Everest, HERE I COME lol (shoot part of your portal up there and then run your way down or use a snowboard or skiis or something, now that would be awesome)

...I just realized that I have $20 in GameStop gift card. Man. That is very tempting, right now.

I've beat...the majority of Half-Life on the PS2. Borrowed it for a while, and eventually just gave it up. It was not a good shooter, as far as I was concerned. It's...something different. But the core shooting-killing of it was very much messed up. And so, being reduced to largely an action puzzle game, I finally got tired of it.

Then again, I've also heard that the PS2 port was unspectacular, so I'm not sure if that had anything to do with it.

I've also heard that Half-Life 2, as a shooter, is much superior. I rather like my iron sights, myself.

PC versions are definitely superior, i mean it was made for the pc and pc games are what valve do best.
I've been playing Half-Life games since the very first, simply the best shooter ever made imo. Cant wait for the Black Mesa mod, its gonna be sweet.

I got HL2 when it came out and it's probably one of the most atmospheric games I've ever played, right from the start with your whole intro to city 17, everything from the monitors and oppressed citizens, to having that combine soldier knock the can on the floor and tell you to pick it up. You really started to hate the enemy right then and there.

Even I don't know how many years later, the game still looks awesome.

Yeah good points, PC is a good version, you can also create mods and Valve is great for Mod teams, they have really helped out game designers who have created games using there engine.

Honestly Mark, you won't regret it. If i was to compare HL1 and HL2, they would be nothing alike. HL2 took it to such new levels; the gameplay is so much better, the graphics are top notch (for its time - but it holds up well as of now too), the story and script is fantastic, and it's one of the most enjoyable gaming experiences i've ever had. And the best thing is is that there is more to look forward to I just doubt it will come on PS3

lol! Glad you enjoyed it, but you didn't really need to make a new thread about it. That's what this thread is for Share the love here

Hmm, well most of the puzzles in HL are to do with the physics, so take that in mind. None of the puzzles are too hard in the game, but they do make you think. Which one is it? Maybe i could give you a hand.

The Orange Box is the best value in gaming. You can pick it up for around $20. Don't get me started on how many hours of my life were spent playing TF2.2009-01-07 19:56:00
