This was a fun episode to listen to with leklack and the reliable Razpacho. This is obviously a longer-than-normal podcast though it didn?t feel overlong though I did listen to it in pieces over the course of a day. I think there were less tangential rat-holes in this one than in #19 and that helps keep things rolling along.

PMP: It's no good, I can't maneuver!
Trindall: Stay on topic.
PMP: *We're too close!*
Trindall: Stay on topic!
PMP: [shouts] Loosen up!

I think that you?ve done a good job so far with the Trindall-meter in terms of judging just how far off the intended path to go before the listener?s irritation flares up or attention span dies down. Mr. krispy kreme has the right idea that the parts where you get off track can often be some of the most interesting parts.

It is better to have an off-topic discussion that all of you are interested in, passionate about or amused by then to plod through a planned segment that no one is involved in or care about. The caveat to all this is that the off-topic should also be generally relevant or interesting in some way to the listening demographic rather than merely a disconnected, stream-of-consciousness discussion.

If you can lay the foundation or build the bridge from here to there then you can do quite a lot.

-----

leklack was fun to listen to and provide feedback on the news and LBP bits. I?m glad to be able to get the human elements behind the screen names and her recounting her origin story to LBP was interesting and very relate-able.

I?d add her to the long list of great guests you?ve had so far and I?d be happy to hear from her more in the future. Too many good people out there and not enough time.

-----

One of the items in discussion was about judging competitions. I've done judging on at least two LBN competitions though thankfully I was always a one of many second round judges. A group of dedicated judges would pass on the top 10/15/X levels to be judged to the second round judges whose results would determine the end rankings.

When I did the work I?d play through all of the final contest levels once to just play them, get the reaction as a pure gamer. Then I?d replay them again noting and scoring different weighted elements such as set/art design, pacing/flow, challenge, relevance to competition theme, fun factor and so on.

I?d replay levels a few more times as needed to make sure that my ratings felt right and then I?d come up with a score that was a composite of the different ratings and would be able to provide my picks for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and so on.

I used to run a level review service in the LBP days for a little over 50 reviews so I basically applied the same criteria on competition levels and took the output in a numerical format to make the final judgments.

-----

About the Sorcery game for the Move. Yes it looked like fun when it was shown at E3, two?, years ago and since I got a Move just to play the LBP Move pack it?d be nice to use it for something else. I?m not even sure if the final product matches anything to what was shown at E3. The lack of press buzz on this game for the last 1-2 years is normally a red flag that it may not actually be the game I?m hoping it could be.

-----

I?m glad the Mnniska fiasco got dressed up nicely. I?m actually only invested in making sure that he gets the nods in each podcast because after him I've managed to get some type of mention in nearly every episode since #7 minus 2 ? 3 along the way. As long as I can keep the focus on Mnniska I can quietly attempt to overtake him at some future point in overall PMP mentions. Is there a pin for that or something? Maybe something in the PMP merchandise section?

-----

Whose idea was the Swedish Chef bit by leklack at the end? I?m guessing there was a bit of arm twisting and explanations to set that little gem up. It was so close to the end and so short I had to listen to it again to make sure that I heard what I thought I heard. Funny.

-----

I think that LBP wouldn?t have gotten to where it is today if it had been an Indie PC release for a lot of the reasons that AFP brought up. The market for family friendly gaming is a lot more saturated on the PC that it?d be harder to stand out like it did on the PS3. Being an indie release would also make the initial funding for large scale advertising likely impossible and it would have to grow in the beginning through word of mouth and game reviews.

This would slow down the adoption rate by gamers quite a bit and while it could end up being successful I imagine it?d be much more niche than it is on PS3. Add to all that the human interface device would have to be primarily the keyboard/mouse which isn?t as easy for younger players to master like the game controllers can be which can limit the youngest demographic adoption rate.

I agree that needing to make the PS3 controller work as you primary HID that MM streamlined the UI to a point that makes it even more accessible to young players and other people not normally into gaming. If this was a PC release there wouldn?t need to be the same optimizations initially and this would further segment the game with a steeper learning curve.

-----

You parting awkward question is a lot better than the last few but still has a clear answer in my book. For me the deciding factor is the time rather than the money. Having the time to do things in the present is much more valuable than money and the chance to use it in an undefined future.

The time to spend with your family, your friends and your own interests is by far a more valuable currency than money in the bank earning compound interest.

As I think about it there isn?t anything in your question that says that my wife can?t work and add that income to the pot. I?d love to be a stay home dad and also get paid to do it. Sign me up!

It is true that sacrificing a few years of your life in exchange for having lots of money may be a good choice for many. If the option was a 40 hour job scrubbing toilets I?d definitely go that route as with a little preparation and the right mindset most bad jobs can be managed and enjoyable.

Sorry for the late feedback! I listened to this the other day, but I've had things going on...

This was definatly a long podcast! A whole 2 hours long! A little bit too long I think.
Anyway, do I even need to submit a question to be mentioned anymore?
I wouldn't say I'm a gaming machine, but when I get into a game, I really get into it.

@Taffey, I don't think that app with achievements you have is going to help you catch up with me and Poo.

@AmazingFlyingPo, I've got a ton of time to gain achievements on weekends.

@Trindall: Good to hear that you didn't mind the podcast length. Perhaps the reason I like long podcasts is that I listen to them in chunks rather than all at once. For ep.20 I tried to focus on getting back on topic after only a few minutes of off-topic goodness You will hear me say things like "I've got bad news guys", or maybe just outright saying we've been off topic too long. Perhaps that helped and I will try to keep doing that unless Tom says it gets annoying for him :-)

leklack was a great guest and I agree with you 100% that it is (!) awesome (!) to hear from these integral members of the community and Tom and I are thrilled that they put up with recording for 2 to 3 hours

Your methodology for judging a competition seems a bit better than mine. I try to wait until it's time to judge before I ever even play the submissions, and then I will try to play them through and rate them on the first play because I want to get a sense of how good the level is when it is fresh, and I worry that if I play it a few times in advance it will feel more stale. I always end up playing all the levels over again anyway, though, and then re-ranking them, so I guess for future competitions that I may be involved in I would follow something more like your method.

LOL, you were the first one to catch the great-Mnniska-fiasco-of-episode-19. Later I heard from WeirdyBeardy, Mnniska, and I believe Valeview about the issue as well.

I'm not sure who's idea it was for leklack to do the Swedish Chef, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't ours. When we were closing out the podcast, Tom said something like "Oh, and you wanted to do something, right Sanna (who is leklack)" and then she went on to do the impression. I'm guessing it was just something that people had requested that she do.

The LBP on PC discussion was a very good one. It seems that you and I are on the same page. That was actually a discussion where you got to see us with different viewpoints on the podcast. I wouldn't say that we argued, but some certainly thought that it would be more successful that I did.

You make some excellent points about the parting questions. While I think that it is a very good question, I agree with you that the money-for-nothing option is the better one for sure. My way of using that option would be to take the income and stream it to me in China because if I could live off of it in the US, then I would be doing pretty well in China, and my Mrs.Poo and I could go help out at schools over there without needing to worry about where our money is coming from :-D

Thanks as always for all of the feedback Trindall!

@Cory: I just saw this morning that you have gone about 1,500 points ahead of me Bummer. Poor Tom though is about 7,000 points behind me

Sorry to hear that you thought the podcast was too long. The good news is that by episode 21 or 22 they will have to be shorter because Tom will have restrictions on how long he can record in the mornings.

Finally caught up with this thread! Loved this episode, and I love the fact that the podcast seems to have settled into a format where people know what they're doing, know what to expect, but there's still enough going on that's fresh and unpredictable that keeps each podcast unique and gives it a flavour of its own. I have no idea if what I've just typed makes any sense, but, eh.

Oh, and RazPacho's MK outtake is definitely one of my favourite PMP outtakes so far.

Another great show guys, and gal. I have to agree with Trindall that while you guys did meander in the topics it was always entertaining. The guests were interesting to listen to and it was fun to hear how a non gamer got sucked into the LBP world.

The one subject I wanted to comment on was LBP for the PC. While it may have done OK, I don't think it would have had the same impact as it did on a console. The main reason being LBP was one of the first true outlets for console gamers to release some pent up creativity. PC gamers have already built levels and even worlds. I don't think LBP would have had the same spark. That fact that it was built around platforming, which is traditionally a console genre, was perfect. Having played them for years, I had a laundry list of things I thought would be cool and ideas to try. Also there is a certain innocence on consoles compared to the PC. I think it's because many of the people playing are not net veterans like their PC brethren. Most of my favorite online experiences came from consoles, with games like Phatasy Star Online, Rainbow 6:3(xbox) and of course LBP.

My question for you guys is what game that is considered bad by most do you champion? Now I'm not talking games that are so crappy that you find them entertaining. The question is more about a game that has been panned by critics and the gaming community as a whole that you would argue is actually good or even great.

For me it would be Too Human on the 360. While it is filled with problems like an identity crisis, disjointed story telling, and a criminally poor instruction on how to actually play the game, it is one of my favorite experiences this gen. As mentioned above I loved PSO and this game was an evolution of the concept of a technique based dungeon crawl.

The second I wanted to mention is, Fatal Inertia(THE EX VERSION IS FREE FOR PS PLUS USERS). Other than the graphic issues of being a beta tester for the Unreal Engine 3, the main complaint lobbied against it is that it's not Wipeout. I guess I was one of the few people who thought that was a plus... It does take some pay to truly get a handle on the controls but I found it very rewarding once I did. Racing through narrow openings just slightly larger than your ship is freaking amazing! Sure you crash and burn 40-50 times first, but once things click it's wondrous!

I finally got to give it a listen last night. Very enjoyable show. Loved hearing Sanna and Raz on. The show was good. I don't really have any comments or questions ATM because I was playing LBP at the time and couldn't fully concentrate on the show. I do remember a conversation about crickets and have to fully agree, I strongly dislike the buggers myself. And yes, they smell horribly. A couple of times a year, they get really bad here and are so thick that you literally have to get a push broom out and sweep off porches and sidewalks. I recall once when I was in JR high, we had to dissect different creatures. I loved dissecting the frog, giant worm, rat, and grasshopper but then we had the cricket. Now these aren't your everyday garden variety crickets. These are special farm bred, nuclear crickets that are friggin' huge. I said "nope." My football coach was the science teacher and he was like you HAVE to do this or take a zero. "I'm takin' the zero coach." and had to go to the library while they dissected the cricket. Trust me, I caught a lot of flak for that one. I was going to post a picture of one of these beast but it's early morning and "googling" these images nearly made me nauseous.
Great show fellas. Hey! I dinnit hear ma name atoll! No questions from ol Biorogue in this episode. That's cool, just thought I was becoming like Sebastian. Better be careful I guess. Before your whole show consist of giving "shout outs" to the LBPverse.

First of all, I'm actually NOT waiting until the very last second to let everyone know we will be recording episode 21 on Friday at 10AM EDT. Our repeating guest is Mnniska and we are keeping the new guest a secret for now :-)

You can catch me in the LittleBigPlanetarium Chat while we are recording if you want to take part in the discussion!

@WeidyBeardy: It's good to hear that you enjoyed the episode! Tom and I can't wait to get you song into the podcast, and it is looking like we will be assisted in the matter so happy times may commence.

As for Raz's Mortal Kombat outtake, it was even better live

@Valeview: Glad to hear that you enjoyed the podcast, but you better have seeing as you made Tom rip into one of my rants so that your name could be said

@Xenon: Woo-hoo! It's good to hear that we didn't get side tracked so badly that it got boring for you. I tried to watch out for us going off track so I could keep it from going on for too long. Not sure how well I did seeing as I had my share of times that I took it off track.

It sounds like we agree on how LBP would do on PC. Thanks for the thoughts!

I'm excited to answer your questions! They are some of the best questions we have gotten

@biorogue: That's a bummer that we didn't say your name. I know that I brought up the redbox thing on ep.19, but I guess we failed on 20

So there is someone else in the world that despises crickets like I do? It sounds like I should never live anywhere near Texas with the way you describe things! And these nuclear crickets sounds like they might be the absolute worst thing in the entire world

So, Q For next episode.
What's in a name?
Do you judge a level's quality before you've played it, depending on the level or creator's name?

I've got a few questions that were sparked by the re-addition of pins to lbp.me and some subsequent chatter on twitter.

It is now much easier to see just how much people have been playing, creating or just sitting around in LBP. Hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of hours for some and some really focused people reaching up into the high triple digits and low four digits of hours.

lbp.me doesn't take into account LBP PSP and the hours on the pins only really show LBP2 which means adding in LBP1 hours just makes it a much larger amount of time spent in either one game or in a game series.

Questions in no particular order of importance;

Are you one of these 100 hour players? 300? 500? Have you spent as much time in a game other than LBP? Which ones? (A few come to mind, World of Warcraft, Minecraft et cetera.)

As a series there are people who may have spent 1000s+ of hours with LBP, have you put as much time into other series? (A few come to mind, Mario, Final Fantasy, Monster Hunter et cetera.)

just one question from me this week: are people underestimating the potential of this?:

Sony has an answer to the asymmetrical multiplayer showcased by the Wii U and Microsoft's SmartGlass technology — whether they realize it or not.

LittleBigPlanet 2's upcoming Vita Cross-Play DLC pack made its appearance in Sony's E3 press conference, but it didn't have the impact that the update may deserve. The presentation made it sound like any other Remote Play title on the console — in all actuality, it's much, much more than that.

With the Cross-Play DLC, you'll be able to use the Vita as a controller for Media Molecule's PS3 platformer, but that's the least interesting of its functions. As you build a level in the PS3 version of the game, you'll also be able to build a corresponding level on your Vita using touch controls reminiscent of Tarsier's upcoming, Vita-based LBP. Using a surprisingly simple catalog of tools, you can connect switches and prompts between the two to create ... well, just about anything you want.

For instance, one level saw three PS3 players wondering around a circular maze inside a spaceship. As they navigated the treacherous room, the Vita player flew the ship through a side-scrolling shooter level on his own screen. Events between the two were linked: As the Vita player moved the ship side-to-side, the PS3 players' maze rotated. As the Vita player wrecked into obstacles, gravity was temporarily suspended for the other players. As the PS3 players found power-ups on the ship, the Vita player's ship was bolstered with missile and laser upgrades.

In a single-player demo, I navigated a level on the PS3 using the Vita as a controller. As I traversed the level, I unlocked "Apps" for the Vita, which I could activate with a touch and change the game: A radar app let me see hidden items, a tractor beam app allowed me to drag and drop objects around the environment, a telecommunications app let me to talk to a helpful guide.

At one point in a level, I jumped in a pipe, and popped out on my Vita's screen. I navigated the traps therein and found a bounce pad which launched me upwards - and back onto the television. It was reminiscent of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures, where every dungeon and cave would kick you onto your GBA's screen. It was also similar to the gameplay experiences that the Wii U and Microsoft SmartGlass are going for.

It's worth noting: Both levels were made entirely in-game using the same tools afforded to players.

This is the second substantial DLC update LittleBigPlanet has received, and it looks just as substantial as the last. The Move Update added some neat functionality that was put to good use by the community, but the Cross-Play update might just make a bigger impact than that. It wasn't just something I've never seen in LittleBigPlanet before — it was something I've never done on a PS3 before, and arguably the coolest use of the Vita to date.
