Little Big Everest

Archive: 15 posts

Level name: Little Big Everest
Creator: MoonSap (PSN)/Sack-Andreas
Difficulty: Moderate/tricky
(Probably best to search by PSN id)
Completion time: Around 10 minutes

Development

Little Big Everest started around 11/11/08 and took around 40hrs from start to finish. The biggest challenge in the creation of the level was balance, and took quite a lot of tweaking to stop everything collapsing.

The level was made as a complete standalone mountain, and was not built as a huge pyramid & cut into. The mountain is actually a huge framework with around 50 support beams, then front & back filled in. Doing it this way took a long time but also helped me see exactly what was going on due to the blue background.

Features

Complete mountain: As mentioned above, it is not a series of platforms & shaped progressing upwards. It is a complete mountain that fills the entire height of the workspace & around 75% of space across.

Story: There is a bit of a story in LBE, which opens up the possibility of continuation (I hope for 4 levels in total). That's all I'll say

Boss: LBE contains a boss battle which i'm proud of. It's done in a good ole original LBP way. Don't expect a fancy paintinator challenge. I could have changed it before publishing, but would have had to completely redo the boss. That & it doesn't fit the original design

Helpful characters: There are two helpful characters in the level that help you up the mountain. Just a little bit though

Prize bubbles: There are 5 prize bubbles in LBE. Don't worry though, they are very easily avoidable for those of you who tend to avoid prize bubbles.

----------

This is my first level and helped me learn the creation process a lot. I loved every moment, from original pencil concepts to creation to finish. Please play my level & let me know what you think. It isn't the prettiest of levels, but hey, it's a mountain!

Pics tomorrow hopefully

Thank you.

Hey, just finished playing your level and heres my thoughts.

First off, nice work for your first level. Could tell you put the 40+ hours into it. I enjoyed it throughout.

PROS

-Really liked how you go inside and outside... makes it feel more like you are climbing the mountain and how you had that all set up. Very nice!

-The platforming was done well. Moderately tricky just as you said, had no problems with any of it.

-Liked the small storyline tied into it... was interesting.

-Didnt get a chance to try the 2x part... but its always nice to see one added.

-Good job at hiding those prize bubbles heh.... with the profile bug the way it is I appreciate that.

-Boss fight was very fitting for the difficulty and play of the level.

CONS

-The inside of the mountain looked a little bland sometimes... looked like the inside of a mountain though I suppose heh...

-Some emitters / switches were visable... not sure if it was intended.

-There was one part right after you run into the fiery ceiling coming down and you need to jump on some platforms in between that one and another fiery moving wall/ceiling that I had problems seeing them. ( know that probably sounds confusing... best way I could explain it though lol )

-On the second rolling fire obstacle...the camera angle was kindve bad... might have been what you wanted... not sure... but it gave me a couple troubles.. even though I noticed the warning it still caught me off guard.

Suggestions

-Maybe add some ropes, lanterns, etc... stuff like that... some fallen stalagmites or something.

-Add lights to those platforms or something... didnt take me long to find them... but they sure dont stick out at all.

-The camera angle, if its not what you wanted, I'd suggest maybe angle one so youre looking forward and see it coming at you.

All in all it was a great job for your first level as I said before. I gave it 5 stars and a heart, and look forward to your future work.

Try my The Stone Temple level if you get the time and let me know what you think. Probably a few pages back now, but I have it posted here. Thanks!

I got stuck at the boss, I think. I didn't know what to do with the red buttons or the white L-shaped sponges.

I really enjoyed the design of the platforming elements. There was enough challenge without being overly frustrating. I really enjoyed the part with the shifting diagonal platforms within that shaft of electricity. Your narrative was interesting, too, and kept the level flowing. I like to collect the prize bubbles to see how creative people are at placing them. You did rather well.

I liked the level. Now how do I beat it? lol

To doc; thanks for your reply & advice. I'm glad you liked it. About the lighting, i prob should have had some in there. Soon i will be adding a 'by night' version with plenty of bright & colourful lighting. My gf is going to sort that out. About the camera angle on fireball part, I didn't think to add one .

'superphilip' ; Thanks for your post too. You beat Mr Zimm by pushing the sponge into holes where buttons are. Don't forget the button at top without sponge.

I'll play both your levels today & get back to you. Thanks

I really liked your level, mostly because it was fun and hard. There are a couple things I think you should change though:

-Visible switches
-Impossible to see platforms in two sections. The first is where the explosive is falling in the middle. The second if in between the two large fiery pieces. These both need some lights.
-Add more points, make players work for multipliers. This adds the replay value when players can compete with themselves to see how high a score they can get.
-Some of the checkpoints in the harder areas could be changed to double checkpoints, I don't think there is anything wrong with being generous with double checkpoints.

I actually didn't get past the giant moving fiery things, I kept screwing up the jump from the checkpoint to the third moving fiery thing. That would be a good place for a double checkpoint.

Yeah just publish your new version on top of your old one. It will ask if you want to over-right, and choose yes. I think the only way to lose hearts/plays is if you choose one of your published levels and delete it.

I'll try this out on the weekends, but I am pretty sure you didn't create this in 10 minutes... Unless your a robot, then I apologize.

EDIT: Lmao, nevermind I must be retarded today... 10 Minutes to complete the level! Duh! Disregard this whole post lmao.

Well I played your level with my little bro and.... well it's kinda empty...
The platforming outside the mountain is OK. It would be cool if you could give more details to the whole stage. Would be a nice touch.

At the end, the guy that throws fireballs at you, I didn't really know what to do when you push all the three switches.

The level was good. I gave it a 3 star rating

I'm kinda short for words^^ My english is really bad

Hi I'm currently playing your level as I type. I seemed to have the same thoughts as everybody else.

+ OK design
+ Solidly built, no glitches or game breaking events.

- Its looks plain. It needs more details here and there.
- It needs lighting added.
- Switches are visible
- Got stuck on the boss to. I kept getting killed by the fire logs

Its a solid enough level, although it needs work in parts, mainly on the look of it. The platforming and everything else are solid enough

Hey! Some comments after playing your level.

+ Cool idea for a level.
+ Plateforming is well done.
+ Like Dr. Ramatool mentionned, I like how you go in and out the mountains.

- Like the others said, the level feels empty. You should really add some elements that make it feel more like it's the Everest. More falling rocks, more snow, rope bridges, snowstorm, tents, etc...
- Adjust the boss, I died with the fire logs too.

The level will be much better if you take some time to make it a bit more detailled. Hope it helps!

I need comments too on a level I made if you have some time. The link is in my signature. Thanks!

just tried it, it was pretty good i'd have 2 say, at most times i did feel like i was climbing a mountain, i aslo would have 2 say that i enjoyed ur secret spot involving the bomb floor, so good job on that

there were only 2 things i kinda didn't like, 1 was that the inside of the mountain kinda reminded me more of a cave then a mountain(but i'm not all the way sure what insides of mountains look like ) and the other thing was the part right after the bomb floor secret with the three things u jump on, i thought it was pretty hard cuz i was constently falling to my death, and when i did make it on you'd feel like u were gonna fall which would make u jump and slid off for real, so unless u want that part hard u should see if u can make it a little easier, but overall it was good, 4/5

for feedback i think u should do my Holan Wars part 1, my 1st level was really crappy compared to it lol, here's a link https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=p=115458&posted=1#post115458

Thanks for playing the level guys & your comments.

The overall look of the mountain was intentional, like I said originally it's a mountain. I didn't want too much that didn't fit the general feel of a mountain (yes I know there's a talking/farting goat lol.)

I agree that some parts may be a little empty, though the level is quite hard already & I could only add things like rocks. I plan to add things tomorrow in another update. Thanks for advice.

Unfortunately the mountains structure is very complex so adding/changing certain things makes the entire thing collapse . Like the single ring checkpoint before boss, so i'm going to add double ring one just after & hope it doesn't look stupid. Along with more mini obsticles

The 'by night' version will be up next week with plenty of mood setting & ambient lighting.

Thaks again for plays/comments, I shall play your levels tomorrow.

EDIT:

Could those who said switches are visable tell me which ones, cos in edit mode I can't see any.

@Whale; All is forgiven lol after reading that I scrolled up & yeah I see how you made the mistake. & yes, to be a robot is a dream of mine, lazer eyes & running on windows XP would do me nicely lol
