Why do you create?/creators block exposed?

Archive: 27 posts

Okay, so recently whenever I go into create mode to make a level or an idea I had in the back of my mind all day, well , Strangely though nothing happens. I just can't create anymore. I check my friends list to see if anyone wants to create with me,maybe they can help me out.No looks like they can, they are busy with other games. Lately alot of people on my friend list haven't been playing LBP,that gets me thinking . I know I can create 2X as fast if someone else is there creating with me and helping/talking. So the problem must be I can't create alone...The next day someone who I create with alot/play comes to my moon and we start creating. About 10 mins in am not really having too much fun....Thats weird I thought I couldn't create because I had been alone....I try for 10 more mins....Still not really having fun....I do create well with music...I browse the web for a moment to say pocketmoon podcast 19 has been released. I play that eager to hear it.I enjoy it awhile (Am back at my moon by now and alone ) and start creating slowly.(I should tell you I create rather slowly when am trying to add detail to a level) So I have a good bit done now though I feel tired.... I enter in playmode and a nice part of the podcast comes up....xkappax,she then talks about how no one creates with friends just to have fun ,that they were just taking it to seriously and not enjoying their creations, that they aren't making what they make for themselves, but for others to enjoy. I think to my self but isn't that the point of UGC? To create for others? This gets me thinking deep...Well why do I create? At first I created for fun and enjoyment ,getting on LBP when I could,But now...Now its just to show people what I can do?Is that wrong? So I ask you this question why do you create ? And is this the reason for creators block? You create because you feel obliged ,which I think can actually cause creators block.2012-05-27 17:35:00

I create because I like to.
I find LBP has limitless possiblities, and if I think up a day dream I'd like others to experience, rather than me saying "Oh, I just thought the most epic thing..."
I create fo' fun.
I create, because I want to.
I have no idea why create. It just feels, right? Y'know?

Thanks for sharing your experience btw. IT made an interesting read

I create for myself and then once i'm done i decide to share it with others.

I have dreams and ideas for games, stories, characters. art concepts... I am a dreamer and I enjoy trying to make some of my dreams real in some form. while i do enjoy when others say they enjoy my work. but in the end what really matters to me is to just create what i feel like creating. *mew

Some people do both.

LBP is a pretty powerful and addictive drug. Anymore, I'd overdose.

I create for the sake of creative outlet.
I've always been a fan of reading and like playing games with interesting stories. With lbp, I get to create those. Even if it is just a platformer, its a type of story.

I love creating because I can look at what I made and say yes, that was me who made this.

Of course there's definitely an influence from oher players, if they don't like it affects what I feel about it quality wise, I definitely don't want to give people a piece of junk.

Plus what I consider high quality for what I'm capable of keeps changing.

I'm not going to be a moral Melvin here-I create for others AND myself. I do enjoy creating a lot, and I actually create by myself most of the time. Many of my creations I knew weren't going to get much recognition (my calculator, for example) and I made them anyway. I must admit, though, that it's quite nice to be noticed. Being on the cool pages; no honor there, and yet you get a lot of recognition. My drive to create was biggest during the short time I was on the cool pages. There was something about seeing "NAruoa1239 hearted Kalawishis", "Caregiver00099 hearted Kalawishis", "Psishark354 hearted Kalawishis" in your recent activity that makes me happy. Not to mention the bump in plays, yays, and positive reviews, as well as sudden attention from bigger creators (movie makers in my case). I would, during that time and now, read all the reviews on my levels (all 400 of them) and feel all warm and cuddly inside. I know it's sad, but having smiling people say that my levels were awesome, funny. etc. felt great. Hell, even someone just typing in "lol" brightened up my day. So anyways, I had most enthusiasm for creating during that time period, and in it, I created my very best film, THE DEATHINATOR (well, best in my opinion). It didn't get on the cool pages, and admittedly, I was disappointed. I still create, and I doubt I will stop anytime soon, but I didn't have that blazing enthusiasm since. If you're thinking I'm a sad little attention w***e, well just think about that time you got spotlighted, or MM picked, or just had a positive review on your level. Didn't it feel good? Or did you just think, "Oh, this sack hearted my level, what a materialist and superficial world we live in. Freakin' jerk."

I apologize in advance if I am not as "pure" as the rest of you.

I do it for fun! Nothings better than watching a movie and then getting a ton of ideas for a level based on it. Granted I don't usually finish these ideas, it's still fun to have these ideas stored for when I want to come back to them.

I still have a few Kung fu panda 2 level ideas from almost a year ago at the back of my head

I create because I must create.

Just like eating, sleeping and breathing, it's a bare necessity of life. If I didn't make stuff in LBP then I would simply spend more time sketching pictures, writing stories and composing music, but in one way or another I will always feel the burning need to create something...anything...

It's like drawing. When I feel like expressing myself on some sort of canvas, I go to create mode and start creating. Of course, I also create to try and add something new to LBP, not just the same recycled concept. When I create for FUN, it's not something most of the community would...understand.
Because this:

...Is what happens.

I love creating because its sort of like a form of art to me. Im pretty terrible at drawing, painting, ect. So spending some time and seeing something that was in my head come out and onto the screen is pretty gratifying. I don't have many levels, and I'm not the best at coming up with storys for my levels. But I love to make things like houses or just cool little detailed places for people to explore. Currently I'm making a Fallout 3 vault level and I think it looks pretty amazing to be honest .2012-05-28 21:36:00

I just create for the fun of it. I have ideas constantly generating in my head, and when I finally get to create it, there isn't anything that can stop me from finshing. Well, excluding friends, new Mm Picks, DLC, my queued levels, diving in and LBPC. Other then that, I am unstopable when it comes to creating.2012-05-28 21:41:00

I'd create if I could create. It's not that I'm incapable, I just don't have any drive to do so anymore. I'd love to create with my pals, but it never seems like I can. LBP isn't the same anymore. (Also the cool pages suck again)

This might be bad luck, but I was about to join a friend, but by the time I booted up LBP, he literally just logged off. Cue screams to the heavens.

(vez you and me should make stuff again sorry for not being on psn that much)

I (try) to make levels for recognition. I want people to know who I am, too bad I am too lazy to actually create a level.

I also try to create to please the community. I want people to have fun in my levels.

I have no problem saying that I have an idea for a level I've been messing with for a while but it's not going anywhere and all the new tools in LBP2 felt off-putting if you will. So I haven't created any levels in LBP2, just polished the old ones.2012-05-29 16:04:00

Personally I create for the community now really. I want to get hearts and plays and spotlights and picks and all that good stuff. Let's face it, who wouldn't? To have everyone know how good a creator you are would just be epic. But now I am starting to lose my creating drive. I have a nice idea for a level: a cute, ice creamy, attract-o-gel-ish level with lots of characters popping up from here and there. Nothing serious really, just a bit of fun. I really want to make it, and I imagine what i could do, but when it actually gets down to me sitting at my PS3, I just seem to lack the drive to create, despite the fact that I just bought the Muppets DLC. I think it's just because I get virtually 0 recognition, (I'm not saying I should get tons, but it would be nice to have more than 44 plays for a level thats been out for over 3 months) so there seems like no point in creating. Maybe I need someone to create with. Someone with an ability to make creating fun, who makes good level sections.... Hmmm maybe I should head over to the Happy Gadders section...?2012-06-12 18:36:00

i only create out of boredom. I have completly drained myself out of the energy to create things. i usually start, then quit it a few minutes later. i have no motivation to create, besides helping my friend shade4040 create his levels, and making funny stuff with him

Creators plea, bring us motivation or competition please!

The main reason I create is to attempt to create stuff no one has ever created. Of course, if it doesn't interest me, I won't venture into it. (This isn't accurately respresented in my only published level, Code Red, with the exception of the spawn system used and the experimental visual style.) Sometimes, I'll be playing a level and notice some key elements absent in that level that would improve it, such as all the boxhead levels lacking the multiplier system used in the flash game, or a HUD completely missing in the Zombie Island and Call of Doody series. Other times, I'll notice certain types of levels are completely absent, or I'll notice a genre of levels lacking a key feature, such as the fact that no MGS1 style levels have appeared yet, or how almost all levels sacrifice score to use it as a currency system. Whenever I see stuff like that, I think, "Since no one else has created it, why don't I create it?"

It also feels great creating levels more complex than the unfinished garbage that appears on the cool levels, although it sucks knowing that mindless kids are still liking top-down shooters with shoddy hit detection, guns that all kill in one hit, backwards health bars, spelling errors, and rushed, unbalanced gameplay or bad game mechanics. (It's hard to explain the last two, but this level (http://lbp.me/v/xjqw8f) is a good indicator of what I'm attempting to point out.)

I create because I enjoy making levels that make people enjoy the game a lil more and because it's something that could always be different. Coming up with new ideas and figuring out how to make it work in the way that you want it is what makes it so great. It's just so personalized.

With all of those reasons there is also the fact that it puts your mind onto something. It's just sucha great feeling to me when everything I create comes together in the way that I imagine them. I could go on and on about this but... I'm sure you get the idea

I'm not that into creating, actually.
There's really no point in creating if you're just gonna like die anyway.
