Animated Level Badges?

Archive: 21 posts

Do you think it would be cool to have a short looping clip for a level badge instead of just a picture?

I think it might be a better way to attract players to your levels.

For those tech savy folks, how hard do you think this would be able to achieve on LBP, if at all possible?

Don't think it's possible at all, unless someone edited the games files to put a .gif file as a replacement for the level badge. Even then, the game code probably wouldn't recognize the .gif file format and reject it.

If the .gif thing works...then you'd probably get in trouble for tampering with game files, so don't do that either. :kz:

I'm not exactly a code monkey...but why can't MM just make .gifs compatible with the game?

how you want gifs if you can't even use your own static images files? ;p and they don't need to use gif, they can just animate sequence of images whatever format.

I don't really see technical issue to animate badges, real issue is how to make user able to create such animation and how this really be useful outside badges, if its really worth it implementing. and even bigger issue is that to see such features like that you need to wait for LBP3 or soemthing ;p

It could be limited to the game the same way the photo and music feature is. The game creates it's own jpegs when you take a picture, so why not its own gifs?

That's what I was thinking! I was thinking it could be similar to how they capture sackbot movements...but with frames and things. Again...I'm not an expert on this kinda stuff! Just making empty comparisons....

They COULD have a camera similar to the movie and game camera that can record a small video of whatever you want. MM are geniuses when it comes to making things simple and user friendly. ^^ I have faith if they DO decide to implement something like this, they would make it very simple and easy to use. I dunno how it would work for outside of badges though...

Imagine you spent months on an epic shooter, and you really wanna show the community what's in store if they visit your level!

Imagine having life footage of you voraciously mowing down zombies/monsters/random henchman!

Imagine getting tons of plays solely from the epicness of your badge!

We need this!

Or...you could have a little video of your level where you put in your info about your level.2012-05-23 06:46:00

That would be awesome if they could do that. I think it may be a bit difficult, but man would it make LBP so much more fun. It could be like a "demo" or quick trailer for levels

That's what I was thinking. When you turn to the info page, there's a little short video showing some gameplay that loops. That'd probably be an excellent way of judging a level's quality before playing it.

*Goes off to record Super Bunnio for level info*

So you're ok with static level badges?

It'd certainly be interesting having animated level badges, but I think it should be optional just in case you want to keep things simple.2012-05-25 15:55:00

Couldn't we just make our own animation instead of a video?2012-05-25 17:18:00

Problem with it is animations require a lot of frames, which would mean even an animation that lasted seconds would need a lot of pictures taking. And considering it's only for a level badge, where images are made all small and horrible quality anyway, I wouldn't think many people would consider it 'worth it'.

Perhaps you could record something with the PS Eye, but that'd be even worse quality, and there's more concerns with unsafe material etc.

They could change the level badges you know . Make them square or rectangular and maybe a tad bit bigger than they are now. And since it's small, the video quality wouldn't need to be high quality to be visible. It would be like a small gif.

Depends on how long the video is. If they can allow a ten second video at 20-24 frames per second then it be something like 240 frames.

It sounds like from your other post that you just want video in general, which would be tricky. Level badges are smaller, which means the video wouldn't have to be too high quality and would render quicker downloads. But if you wanted to have a video of gameplay in the info pane, the video quality would have to be higher, which would mean more stress on the server, your harddrive, and more time waiting for it to download. The video file would have to be bigger than the level itself in most cases.

This seems like a cool idea, but I would rather just have like a short gameplay video in the description/info area of the level before you play a level.2012-05-26 03:01:00

I don't really know about how much reward the short animation would bring, considering the game's already lackluster inability to load simple photos of the level. It may take a lot more time to load (which LBP2 does a good job at already), but then again, I'm not an expert so I could be terribly wrong.2012-05-26 03:28:00

I think you just answered the question of why this wouldn't be practicable with the current servers.
