Making Working tanks treads! (No pictures, sorry)

Archive: 4 posts

Hey there, sack-chums! Woffit66 here, creator who has yet to publish anything, and LBP's infamous drag queen. Today, I'm going to teach you how to make tank treads. I'm afraid there won't be any pictures, as I'm not very good with screenshots and media sharing and whatnot.

First, turn your Small Grid on. Make a long, thin layer bar of Cardboard to the length of your choice. This will act as the mounting for your wheels. Next, make 2 large single-layer Metal wheels, and 4 smaller wheels, also made of metal, and 1 layer thick. Position the wheels so that when the track unit is on the ground, the larger wheels and the bottom 2 smaller wheels touch the ground. Turn the track unit over, so that the bottom wheels are now at the top, and make sure that the top (now bottom) wheels touch the ground without stopping the larger wheels from doing so in the same manner as the bottom (now top) wheels. Attach all wheels with motor bolts, set to around 200 speed, and set input action to Speed Scale. Also, in the middle of the track unit, put a metal rectangle, 1 layer thick, and attach it to the mounting, making sure it does not get attached to the wheels. This is primarily cosmetic addition, but it does look good. On the metal rectangle, attach a Microchip, entitled Track Input or something similar. on it, put an inverted NOT gate. Link the output of this NOT gate to all the motor bolts. Now, if you put a switch or Controlinator on your vehicle, you only need to link the output of the switch to one input.

Now the tricky part: the treads. Make sure that Small Grid is enabled. Using the Circle tool, make a rounded metal track segment that is 2 grid squares long and 1 tall, 1 layer thick. Copy this, and make it thin. The thin bit will form the link. Now turn off the Grid and make a very thin plate of rubber, 1 layer thick. Glue this onto the bottom of the metal track segment. Now put 2 bolts on the track link, 1 for each side. To avoid lag in play mode, make them invisible. Finally, add a Material Tweaker to all the components of the track, with "Indestructable" set to Yes. This is crucial.

Now, turn the Small Grid back on, and copy the track segment. Make a line of segments, making sure that they don't fuse (this is why the Small Grid is important). Now copy the track link, and connect all the segments together. Make sure you have a spare link to hand. The track belt should be almost long enough to wrap around the wheels of the tread unit.

Now for the really tricky bit. Attach an Anti Gravity Tweaker with Dampening set to 100% to the track unit, and suspend it in the air. Now turn the grid off. Pause the level, and take the tread belt and hold it against the wheels. Now make 2 blocks of Dark Matter (or Light Matter, whichever tickles your fancy) and attach the left end of the tread belt to the right Dark/Light Matter block with String. Then attach the right end of the tread belt to the left Dark/Light Matter block, also with String. The Strings should cross over. Now unpause. Copy the Anti Gravity Tweaker onto one end of the tread belt. Now select the String attached to the other end of the belt, and shorten it until the belt is pulled as tightly around the treads as possible. Now copy the Anti Gravity Tweaker oton this end, and delete the String. Now remove the Anti Gravity Tweaker from the other end, and repeat the string shortening process on that end. Make sure it is pulled as tight as possible, so the 2 ends of the track almost touch. Now take the spare track link, and use it to connect the 2 ends of the tread belt. Delete the String and Anti Gravity Tweaker from the ends of the tread belt, and gently place the unit on the ground before removing the Anti Gravity Tweaker from the main wheel assembly. Now decorate as you see fit.

Notes:

If the treads are attached to a large vehicle, make sure it is as light as possible, or the treads may not work.

Whilst it is obviously OK to use different types of the materials listed (Gekko Skin for the tread segments, Tyre Tread for the rubber plates, Gekko Armour Plating for the wheels, etc.) do NOT use different materials (such as wood for the treads). It may cause the treads to break.

As tempting as it may be, don't skip the bit with the rubber plates on the metal treads. Bare metal has very little traction, and just making the treads out of rubber causes them to glitch up, bounce around, and break. Also, don't try making the tread links out of Hologram, as they will just snap.

This is a very difficult object to construct, so don't get upset if the first time you try it doesn't work. Make sure the treads are as tight a fit as possible, so they don't bunch up or flop.

Good luck!

Yeah, you really need pictures, I got lost at the middle. You know, you just have to take pictures in-game and press square on them to send them to LBP.me and you can place the picture here. Pictures stay online for a very long time, over a year, so you don't have to worry.2012-05-18 19:18:00

Actually, they stay quite a lot longer. I have a picture on my profile from 3 years ago

I agree. I've been trying to get treads to work for ages, and I'd really love some visual assistance in this, since it's quite vague and confusing exactly what to do.
