1-1 Central City (SuperPhillip The Game)

Archive: 18 posts

Central City is the first story level of SuperPhillip: The Game! It's actually a two part level which I wasn't really planning, but I ran out of space-- not thermometer-wise but room-wise. There was nowhere left to build to the east. That was a blessing though because it allowed me to add so much detail to make the city come to life. Now this definitely filled the thermometer.

As with 0-1: The Warehouse, there are five hidden prize bubbles to collect. This earns you the sticker needed to reach the key. If you're just rushing through the level, you're not really doing it right. I've built my levels (excluding challenge levels) to encourage exploration. I hope you will look around.

Part 1 is a stroll through Central City setting things up.

Part 2 is much shorter and much more switch-intense. It was very complex to make. A pain in the butt to tweak. tjapan ran through it and reported no problems after his second attempt (I promptly fixed the level-ender in his first run)

I don't want to give away too much eye-candy to ruin the experiencing of seeing everything for yourselves. It's like first stepping onto Hyrule Field in Ocarina of Time, y'know? It's not the same if you expected it.

Please heart me and my levels if you enjoy them. If not, please provide happy feedback!

I play tested this while you were still fixing up the level and really enjoyed the experience. I look forward to going back and seeing how it's improved. I must say I love your art sytle, it's very unique. 2009-01-04 05:43:00

I had a chance to run through part one the other day and I really enjoyed it. There is a tremendous amount of polish that I wish more creators took the time to achieve. I love all the custom creations and I would particularly like to point out all the custom lettering you have. There is an overwhelming tendency for people to use those ugly alphabet stickers to write words out instead of taking 15 minutes to make their own lettring which looks 10X better and is more likely to fit the look of the level. There is just so much detail in this city of yours that it truly feels "alive". One of my favorite parts is the third picture you have posted up above, very cool and it made me smile My only real suggestion at this point is to make all check-points double life. The last thing you want is people dying mid-way through and giving your level a low rating because of that. 5 stars and hearted! I will check out part 2 within the next couple of days.

As for the F4F system, I would ask you to wait until my new level (218) is released. I have already recieved a ton of feedback on my other two levels but that should not prevent you from trying them out and leaving a sentence or two for me saying "hey I really liked it" or "this level sucks OCK" lol. Thanks for making such a great level and I hope you enjoy my creations

I'll play Out of Africa as a refresher as well as check out The Legion.
I haven't had time to play other levels since working on 1-1. I'm taking a week off to play member levels now.

Hey Now it's my turn to give some feedback....
Ok first of all, I was ultimate cool, and epic!!!

Now some "real feedback"
Part 1
1) The first Gunnerbot was waaaay to easy, maybe this is what you intended but you could've made some kinda puzzle to destroy it. Just like you did in part 2, where you have to hang on that hook to get over the bot.

2) The hotel looks Realllyyy good

3)I keep loving the story i've played all you levels and I love the how you make your own superhero as if littlebigplanet doesn't even excist.

4) I loved the first gunner bot.
But the 2nd gunner bot was very annoying, First I had to walk all the up, after that, you reach the gunner bot, then i died because it's pretty hard. Then you have to walk allllll the way up to get electrified by the gunnerbot again.

So what i'm trying to say here is, that it may be a good thing to place a checkpoint right at the place where the gunnerbot is shooting. (do you even understand >_>)

Part 2
1) The part where the robot crashes into the wall is REALLy cool

2)This hotel is even better :hero:

3) I like the bots where you have to grab the hook and jump over it.

4) I really have no idea how you could improve part 2, it's just really good

That's it.

Well, I just played through 1-1 once again, and also tried part 2 for the first time.

Overall they are great levels. I really enjoyed playing through and exploring them. Your graphical flair, cinematics and dialogue are great.

I have some suggestions though...

The gunbots in part 1 are not killable (at least I think they are not). It would be great if there was some way TO kill them though, it would make things feel more complete. Having some sort of brain on the hotel one would be nice, and have some sort of switch/cinematic to kill the construction one would be great.

The secret bedroom spring seemed a bit malfuntiony. It's either on a slow timer thing which felt too slow or it felt like a sensor was playing up.

Now for part two.

I noticed one of the computers in the hotel area was not stuck down.

The bubble grabbing section was kind of frustrating. Having the sign made out of sponge (grabbable) made it hard to grab the swinging thing to get up to the bubbles. If you could change the material but retain the looks it would make it less frustrating.

Also that section in general I found quite fiddly, I was on to my last life when I cleared it. It may be wise to make it a double life check point.

The grabbable sponge thingy after you kill the final robot almost got me stuck. I was not completely stuck, but it was a bit fiddly. :S

Overall though, it's a fantastic series of levels. I also really liked how you made a sort of "to be continued" feel to each of the endings. It's a nice touch which really motivated me to continue to see what adventures would happen next.

Great job on both levels!

As part of the F4F system, could you check out my TSR level? Any feedback would be appreciated.

I just saw the photos you posted for the level, it looked good so I gave it a try.

+ First impressions, the visuals are good and very clean. I definetly like the style of them
+ Original enemys, always a plus
+ The level design is also good. Everything flows nicely
+Everything is well sign posted. You never don't know where to go
+The story is ok, and well presented in the video screens

- The enemys are very easy to defeat
- The camera angle when you move up the stairs in the hotel make it hard to see where youre going
- I don't know whether the thermo was getting full or not, but the last couple of sections were'nt as detailed as the start.

**** and "good" tag in game. Hearted

I enjoyed the level, it was a good play, well designed and thoughtout. There were a few problems but nothing major that can't be fixed.

Good job. I'm gonna start the second now....

Part 2

+ Looks the same as the first, keeping it consistant
+ I like the eyes appearing at the window, a look at things to come??
+ Like the building details, and then it al falls down. Brilliant!! It made me smile
+ The parts where the machine appears, I liked these.
+ The platform section across the construction site is very well done
+ The story is getting better, can't wait for part 3

- Its a shame that on the platform sections where you are chased, if you die, then you skip it all out. I suppose theres no other way to do this though
- I thought there should have been more to destroying the robots arm. Hitting a couple of swtiches spoiled the climax a little.

**** and "Satisfying" tag left in game. Hearted

I liked these two levels, they had a good look, design and played well. The second part really was great, the few sightings and examples of the robots power were well thoughtout.

Hurry on with the third

--------------

My F4F level is in my sig.

Thanks

Pros

- Great aesthetics and attention to detail

- Secret prize bubbles are well hidden

- Layout was fantastic

- Platforming was great

- Your use of layers to fight enemies was ingenious

- Your enemies, including the boss, were visually stunning.

-Fantastic job building up the boss

Cons/Suggestions

- The boss fight left me wanting more. I was expecting to get to take down the whole robot but I didn't get to. Kinda left me sad.

- The red area on the robot - If you go to it before blowing it up and jump over it, you can go through a hole on the left side and get stuck. Should be a simple fix.

- When there were a lot of speech bubbles, I would tend to get near the end with three or four more left to read, and then they'd all disapear. I don't know why this is happening so I can't really suggest anything, but I'm sure you can figure it out.

Loved the level, 5 stars and hearted both level. Can't wait to see where it goes from here.

It could be but it still left me sad.

My thermometer was basically full on both levels. lol
Too much detail, I guess.

As for the enemies that someone else was talking about, yeah, I didn't want to make them very hard. Remember it's the first story level of 18. The game will get progressively more difficult.

The part where you have to leap over the Gunnerbot's shots in the construction yard forces the player to stop and then jump over each one. If you try to run and jump, you'll probably get killed. There's enough time to run and jump to the next beam without much danger. I can't place brains on the Gunnerbots. There's no room at all for that.

As for the bubble part-- did you jump to the ledge with the three score bubbles? That helps to see the timing. You need to grab a different bubble right as the arm pulls back.

Did you guys like the dialogue?

Thanks for the feedback, and I'll be playing some levels later today since I'm on a week break before creating 1-2.

I'm sorry to bump, but I changed the lighting in part 2. For those who have already played it, do you like it better?

For those that haven't played 1-1 at all, why you no like Philly?

Hey Phillip!

I just played 0-1, 1-1, and 1-1 Pt 2. All excellent levels! Your level design is exactly the sort of thing I imagined seeing in LittleBigPlanet; it all feels like a miniature filmed world, it's gorgeous, cute, and tons of fun!

I didn't play part 2 before your revision, but the global lighting has a good feel to it, as if time has passed since the first part. I also like how the checkpoints move through certain parts so you can't get stuck in an unplayable level.

Hearted all and you!

Played both levels and absolutely loved them Phil. Totally epic.

Pros

-Your dialogue was great for one. The story is going to be a lot of fun to work with as you've left it pretty wide open for future levels.

- I loved the overall look of Part 1. Your attention to detail was freaking awesome. I especially liked the part where it looks like your looking down an entire street (with the road lines ect). Genious!

- Your enemies were pretty well done. I liked how you had to find ways to get around them instead of simply running and jumping over them. Part 1 also got gradually harder along with the enemies which, in my opinion, is perfect execution

- You made great use of MM-made content (mainly stickers). You rarely see this so great job!

- In Part 2 I thought the "cut-scene" with the boss at the start of the level was put together better than a JBC from Wendy's, which translates into awesomeness. I was sooo pumped to get going through the rest of the level.

- The exploding platforms were amazing, and I saw a comment above about it being too bad that you can't go back and try the platforms again. I don't agree with this at all. It gives the level replayability, and the will to try it again. I'll definitely be coming back for more!

Cons

-I have no beef at all with the first part other than a shoddy camera angle going up the stairs in the hotel. I think someone pointed it out above as well.

-After playing the levels back to back, the color scheme you went with in Part 2 didn't fit at all for me. I think you should try and keep a constant scheme through all your parts. It'd be kind of wierd to see Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in black and white every other episode (if you know what I mean).

- While I enjoyed the boss completely, the ending was a little lack-lustre, but not horrible by any means. Too easy may be the correct term here I guess.

So all things considered, you and your levels are gems bud. Can't wait for more! 5/5 stars and hearted you and your 2 levels. Bravo!

Not to burst anyone's bubbles, but you guys do realize SuperPhillip got banned (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=7095), right?2009-01-06 02:08:00

My only feedback seems to be what a couple of others said, the boss battle was a little lame. The boss looks great, and the build up to the battle is great, even after he is dead is great, but the battle is just run up and pull a switch. One thing that would make this feel a lot more epic is if his arm was moving while the player had to jump on to get to the switch. Adding moving parts might be a lot of work, but it doesn't have to be anything fancy to add a lot of cool/fun factor.2009-01-06 07:22:00

Hrm that's really too bad. I thought he was a pretty hilarious guy, not to mention a good creator. Oh well

This might be the first time I ask the creator if it's okay to review his level, because after playing the 2 of them tonight I'm fairly convinced that you "ser" are a genius.

These levels are brilliantly constructed, and it's for those reasons that I was wondering if it is alright to review them in my "review corner"

EDIT: Whoa hey, saw that SuperPhillup was banned. That's a surprise. Hey SP, if you're reading this, please note that I am sorry about this unfortunate turn of events. For what it's worth, I've already hearted you as an author and still support your SuperPhillup adventure levels, so good luck with the project mate.
