looking for feedback for my online platform game editor!

Archive: 11 posts

hi all!
if this isn't the right forum to post this, please let me know (and apologies if i commit any forum faux-pas! i'm pretty new to the community...)

tl;dr
i'd love to get your feedback on my online platform game editor!
http://taketheblock.com/

after playing littlebigplanet 1 and 2 on the ps3 obsessively recently (i'm a late bloomer for games, embarrassingly enough :-) i started fooling around with the level editor and disappeared from my friends and family for a few days...

i had so much fun creating tons of stages, but unfortunately only a couple of my friends had a ps3 with a copy of LBP2, so most of my friends weren't able to see my creations, and the ones that did just replied with "that's cool!", but not much else.

but then i got the idea to make a web browser-based platform game editor, so that anyone with a computer could see (and play!) the stages i designed. the goal was to make it as easy as possible to share my creations, and i added a magic bonus of being able to watch my friends play my stages too, by recording replays of their attempts. it was a blast watching them fall into my traps :-P

after cobbling it all together (http://taketheblock.com) i thought that it might be something other stage designers would be interested in. if so, i'd love to get your thoughts and feedback on what kind of features you'd like to see! of course, it's still really early in development and lacking most of the fancy tools that made the LBP editor so awesome, but it's a humble start!

thanks!

Hey, just checked it out and I dabbled a bit in the editor. It works as intended and it has a nice aesthetic to it. Some things I will like to see in the future are;

-Checkpoints
-Items maybe?
-Coins (or anything that could add to the competitive side of the game, secret coins, coin streaks, etc,.)
-More blocks
-More mobs
-Music (maybe like LBP, where you can change the music?)

Those are some that come off the top of my head, of course I understand that the game is still in early development but I thought I'd share my thoughts anyhow.

One thing I'd love to see added in the game is some complexity. As of right now I can't do much in terms of the block placement. For example, what if I want the spring to launch the player 10 blocks high? Or 200 blocks high? Or maybe 1 block high? I don't have that power as of right now. Or another example would be the speed of the conveyor belts or the speed of the cannon's fire. I'd definitely like to see something like that implemented in the game.

As of right now, there isn't much to see (or do for that matter) but I like what I see and it can definitely develop into something big if you continue with it.

One thing I really liked however, was the implementation of recording replays. Really nice job with that feature!

Anyways I wish you good luck and hope to hear more updates on this game (on this thread hopefully) in the future.

Just glancing at the site makes it look cool... o.o

Just watching the video makes me think you could sell it and actually make money...

Just playing it... Wow. Pretty awesome. I agree with Whale that there isn't much and there's a few things that would be great to implement. But it's pretty freaking awesome so far. Great work!

thank you so much for checking it out and providing suggestions! i'll be working hard these next few weeks to get those features in :-)
you're 100% right that more complexity is needed for the stages to be truly expressive, both visually and puzzley (if that's a word?). a sandbox is only as fun as the toys you put in it! my roommate and i have this HUGE list of blocks and customizations we want to put in, and we hope to roll those in over time as the game evolves.
i really appreciate that you took the time to give such detailed feedback, and i hope our game can live up to its potential!

thank you! my roommate put together the demo video -- he's made a lot of flash animations and has a real eye for directing!
hahah, selling a game is so far off in the distance for me, for now i'd just be happy with making something cool that people enjoy :-)

Anytime! Another feature that I thought was pretty cool was how you could leave messages at certain blocks about something. So if you died to spikes at X-5 Y-2, then you could leave a message for anybody else who dies at the same spot. I've never thought of that being implemented into any game and I really like it!

haha, i hope that "chinese people playing ping pong" is a positive response to the trailer?

we just rolled out our first power-up (the double-jump) and a basic colors block set so people can create pixel art in the stages. if there's any more suggestions please let me know! we're working on new features as fast as we can :-)
