Video Game Music - It's cool, amirite?

Archive: 61 posts

Yeah, I know, we're getting a very special kind of geeky now.

I'm sure like me, a lot of you here have played games over the years that have brilliantly memorable music from video games that has stuck with you over the years, right? I could make an essay listing all the tunes I love from games I've played because I'm cool like that.

Instead, I'll just list a few with a link. I'm interested in what tunes have stuck with you guys so by all means do the same in your posts.

Star Ocean 3 - Highbrow
GVZuVEwnZIQ

I really love Motoi Sakurba's music. He's worked on a whole lot of RPG's so if you're into JRPG's, it's quite likely you've heard his music at some point. You'll notice that this song is freaking long. It's incredibly progressive and has tons of varied stuff. It starts off as your typical final battle music, and it sets the epic scene real nice. But then as the fight progresses, you hear some cool, unexpected jazzy parts, epic synths and some distorted guitar-like sounds. Real epic!

Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker - Theme
6hfvtIf3LS4

One of my favourite video game themes. Really natural and quite folky (is that a word? ^ o ^) too. Koji Kondo has composed tons of beautiful music for the Zelda series but this one takes the cake for me. Also check out this amazing one man band rendition of it:

YouTube - Wind Waker Unplugged

Banjo-Tooie - Hailfire Peaks
owbVtwrO_TQ

There's so much awesome, catchy music in the Banjo series that I was hard pushed to pick just one. Like a lot of Banjo-Kazooie music, they've used brass and wind instruments in a way which gives it a sort of 'silly', light-hearted sound. It's pretty original. I loved this tune so much that I'd just come into the stage even after completing it, just to listen to it. ^ o ^

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - Hill Top Zone
2W3xQjjogr0

Again, really **** hard choice as all of the original sonic games have great music. This one is particularly catchy and for me, it's the kind of tune that follows you long after you've turned the console off. I love the main bassline in particular.

I have tons more I could post, but I thought I'd give some other guys a chance. Any takers?

YouTube - Broadcast Yourself.. Man, that's stuff you absolutely CANNOT beat. I specifically went diving into the .pk3s just to find the music from that. It really is pretty amazing stuff.

Call of Duty has the slow, beautiful melodies mixed in with parts of chaos, all of which screaming WWII. And a tune that comes to mind is that hymn which played through some of the Russian levels. And then YouTube - Broadcast Yourself.. For some reason, all the best music was for the tank battles. And with the engine noise, firing cannons, and the rest, the music got drowned out. But it was really moving, intense stuff. And with the more diverse setpieces, it really had a great selection.

Both those games had music that perfectly matched the rest of the game. Music that really reinforced a feel of the real urgency in the battle, and the great relief coming with success. And scale both epic and minute. Unfortunately, CoD4 followed a bit with the second, and all too often it's obscured by the loudness of what you're shooting. So it leans less towards music, and more towards timed orchestral tension.

Man, it makes me want to go and reinstall those games again...

And who could ever forget Halo? From the menu to the final drive to escape, music was key, distinct, and immediately memorable. And, if I'm not mistaken, it was really the first FPS to ever do that.

I could probably sit here for hours on this subject. But I think I'll leave it at this:

Video Game Music: Heck yeah it's awesome. I pity the people who turn it off just to hear the gunshots.

I know people that don't consider it real music because it doesn't play on the radio (and by people, I mean my family >_>). My mom in particular just considers it all just "beeping" and always refers to the Mario Bros. main song (which, for actually being made out of beeps sounds amazing even today).

</rant>

I enjoy game music, maybe not for how good a song sounds, but often for the memories associated with the song.

The entire of the 3 Halo Soundtracks are EPIC. Final Fantasy VII's soundtrack, especially the opening theme and one winged angel. And the original Mario Bros scores, plus the music from Sonics 1-3&Knuckles, but especially twilight zone. And Marble Zone.2009-01-04 10:43:00

Pretty much the only music I listen to is VG music. I hate almost all of the mainstream music out there.

Okami, The Strange and Somewhat Sinister Tale of the House at Desert Bridge, Zelda, Megaman 2 and 9, FFX, Mother 3, they all had awesome music. Especially Mother 3.

SupraDarky (http://uk.youtube.com/user/SupraDarky) keeps a list of best VGM.

I definetly have to agree with your choices. Especially Mother 3, and the entire Mother series in fact, just amazing.

Jeremy Soule (Guild Wars, Oblivion)
Michael Giacchino (Medal of Honor - some of them)
David Logan (He's my composition teacher! Not sure of all of the games he's made music for, but he's told me some old ones like Pitfall 3D, and I know he's making the music for the upcoming Heroes Over Europe. He showed me an early demo!)

Rock band is really more "music game" and less "game music" but it's really interesting to see the line between the two blur. It's also fascinating to me how many people have discovered songs and artists because of Rock Band and Guitar Hero.2009-01-04 20:24:00

Yup.

But yeah, those rhythm games are, specifically, music games. Not game music. Game music would be stuff created specifically to be in and complement a game, usually to reinforce the emotional heft of it, rather than being the actual facade for timed button presses in sequence.

Although I'm not quite sure what kind of emotional heft the Super Mario Bros. theme has in it. Well, you get the point, right?

With some games, I might say that setting a mood with music is nearer the mark than emotional heft. Taking old NES games like Mario as an example, most of those songs were around a minute long and looped endlessly, but the YouTube - Legend Of Zelda Hyrule Overworld Theme still manages to sound grand and adventurous, with a moodier more brooding theme used when you were exploring the YouTube - The Legend of Zelda Music - Underworld (Dungeon).2009-01-04 20:49:00

Fu fu fu, one of my favourite XKCD comics. I know what you're saying too.

To the many, many Tales links by Rock:
Really nice choices. Sakurba is nothing short of a genius. Meaning of Birth from Tales of the Abyss I found especially awesome. I need to play that game...

To LBG:
Can't believe I haven't mentioned MGS yet. Old Snake is fantastic. I love the distinctly electronicy, moody sounds of MGS.

Kingdom Hearts seriously has the best video game music - ever. I was going to post a video of some here, but pillaysteven actually already posted it.

I was going to post some but I thought I'd give some other people a chance. Well, here's a couple now:

Kingdom Hearts I&II - Scherzo Di Notte

bM-w_k2H6G8

The music that played during battles at Hollow Bastion. Brilliantly epic. Really suits the gothic castle theme. All the Kingdom Hearts music is composed by Yoko Shimomura (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yoko_Shimomura) who also composed for Super Mario RPG, Dark Chronicle and Legend of Mana.

Kingdom Hearts II - Sacred Moon

aMlW25829wo

Music that plays at The World That Never Was. Beautiful, mysterious and nicely subtle. That's all I have to say on that.

O lawd, where the hell to begin?

Really nice choices, Voltaire. Some of my faves are up there. You just took me a for blast through part of my childhood.

Sonic 2, my favourite of the early sonic games. Chemical Zone is funkay.

Final Fantasy music is almost always awesome. Couldn't have put Aeris Theme better myself, "BAAWWWW!".

OMG, I thought I was the only person in the world who liked Parappa. I keep posting random Parappa lyrics in the spam can and nobody knows what they are. ^_^

Gerudo Valley is awesome. I'm really into spanish guitar and this is probably the best example of it in any video game I've played.
