US to Get Solar Eclipse on Sunday (May 20)!

Archive: 8 posts

When the sun vanishes behind the moon for the first time over the United States in this century, what better place to enjoy the view than from one of the 154 national parks that stand in its path?

Astronomy lovers in the United States will be treated to a partial disappearance of the sun behind the moon this Sunday (May 20). Only the Eastern Seaboard will be totally exempt. Over the course of the solar eclipse, the sun won't vanish completely, but will remain as a ring around the moon for what is known as an annular eclipse. When the eclipse occurs, the moon will be near its most distant point from Earth, making it appear smaller in the sky and thus unable to block the entire sun. But it will still be a stunning sight.

Well this is very interesting. I never had the chance to see an actual solar eclipse, or as they're calling this one an annular eclipse. This should be fun!

I read something like this before, and I have to expect it. Of course, I thought there is going to be a total eclipse in 2017, but maybe it won't happen.2012-05-16 14:53:00

I live in Alabama, and a few months ago the northern lights were visible in my area. I never got to see them though, lol2012-05-16 20:31:00

Is it Katrina?

@gdn001: Solar eclipses are rare in America. Although there are at least 12 total eclipses a year, the majority of the total eclipses are over an ocean.

As if 2012 doomsday predictions weren't enough to rattle the US census... now the whole sky's gonna go dark at high noon.

I hope the priest has a homily set up for this...

I remember when I read a book about the universe. It told us that people feared solar eclipses in the past. It's very interesting. There was one war in the Middle East in the B.C. years, and it ended due to a solar eclipse.2012-05-17 05:43:00
