Costume Creator?s Kit Request

Archive: 33 posts

Hiya all, Sozo here. I have a pretty cool somewhat special idea for a DLC if I do say so myself~

But lets get some stuff out of the way before we get started. If you don’t care about or hate costumes in general then leave now. This topic is for costume/character design enthusiasts, if you have no interest in costumes/characters then do us all a favor and don’t reply. There’s no reason to be rude to people and or their dreams just because you don’t like something yourself. Lets all try to get along alright? Now enough of that. Back to the main subject.

Now here’s something that has been on my mind for a long time. We as LBP players/customers really have not gotten any say what we get for costume DLC. Well not since the old costume contest back in the beginning of LBP1 anyways. and I really think it be nice if us costume/character creators got some truly useful stuff for custom character creation. Sometimes I really feel us costume/ character creators are really forgotten or in general are not really cared about much in the LBP community, Sure LBP get lots of costume DLC. But how much of it is really useful for creating custom characters for our own levels, games and or stories? …Not a whole lot to be honest. A lot of them sticker bad and are to overly specific to be turned in to many different things easily. And sometimes it’s just plain impossible to get a character to look like what you want them to because LBP lacks some very basic semi important costume parts honestly. And I really think it be cool if we had good enough parts that we could almost make our own characters that look unique like the LBP2 story mode characters.

Now you may say that’s true but what can we really do about it? Well here’s where my idea for this topic comes in to play.

I want you all with me included to think up awesome costume part ideas that would be more then super useful for unique character creation. And maybe even simple tools that would be useful for costume creators. I’ll pick out all the best ideas and draw concept art of them and include them in the first post in this topic in a list. Then once we have enough stuff we all overall can agree on, I will then go and with anyone willing to join me go hand request these costume ideas to be made in to a real DLC Kit. Maybe a crazy dream I know. Low chance it’ll happen. But LBP is all about dreaming. But remember what is important is we just go and try regardless of what the outcome may be, nothing gets done in life by setting around doing nothing and fearing to say anything. Now come on friends, lets go and dream together and just do our best to make our dreams real.

Now for some rules.

NO copyrighted costume ideas.
It’s all nice and fine you like some series/movie or whatever, but this topic and kit idea is not for any o normal costume pack. This pack is only for useful parts that are very basic and easily customizable. You should not go any more far then loosely basing a idea from something for this kit.

Try to be at least semi realistic with ideas.
Basically don’t go and ask for anything that clearly would never be made. Now don’t hold back on your ideas to much. Just try and keep your eyes on a goal that has at least a small chance of happening.

Don’t Ask for 100+ ideas to be in kit.
Even if by some small chance this costume creator’s kit did get made. No way in hell would it have 100 plus costumes in it. Remember it’s about quality not quantity. just try and think of the very best ideas you can then share only the best ones you thought of.

I think that’s everything for as rules go.

I Think I’ll start this off with what ideas I myself thought of for the kit.

Just putting this here as a example to compeer the other costumes with. Clearly this is not suppose to be a costume idea.

A Basic yet very useful classical cartoon looking costume.
Classic Cartoon Muzzle
Classic Cartoon Noodle Limbs Arms
Classic Cartoon Noodle Limbs Legs

Nice basic Sphere Shape costume parts on this costume that could easily be used for a lot of character ideas.
Perfect Sphere Shape Headgear
Ball Torso

Made to be fairly like the character Eve’s body but instead as customizable parts.
Simple Female Shape Torso
Simple Female Shape Legs

a Faceless costume great for making your own face designs on.
Faceless Eyes
Faceless mouth (how it'd work IMO would be it'd replace the head model with one that has no mouth)

http://www.freewebs.com/chaoswinds/Sozo/My%20Art/PartsCostumeIdeas0-post.pngSingle costume parts.

Dragon Muzzle
Basic Pointy Animal Ears
Basic Anime Style Eyes

-----

Well that’s all I’ve came up with so far.

And if all of that was a bit to wordy for ya. here's the short version.

With some people and friends of mine I'm gonna try to get a list of none copyrighted costume ideas made in to a real DLC pack by trying to request The DLC makers or whatever to do them. first step is to for us to come up with cool useful costume ideas. i will draw the top ideas and add them to the list. now go have fun. *mew

EDIT-01. I added the Faceless-Costume idea.

That's really a neat idea that would open lots of possibilities for variety of cutscenes.
I think it would be really fun to see how sackpersons would be made and what costume creators would do.
I wonder why no one thought of this before. O.O

A completely featureless face. No perma-grin!

Sometimes I just want to have an object or sticker for a mouth. Or even better, more prosthetics! The Statler and waldorf bits have been really useful, I'd really like to see some more nose, ear and mouth options.

Anything that's capable of making sackboy look less sackboy basically. I want sad, haunting and scary!

I've always fancied longer legs too.

Well i don't think longer legs would work since sackpeople must remain their overall model size.

but anyways tell me what you want in the form of a list so i can understand it all a bit more easy.

I haven't been interested in most of the recent costume packs and haven't brought any of them.

I would buy something like Sozo is suggesting if it were made into a reality. I would particularly like to see the anime eyes and different shaped limbs and bodies.

Different shaped body pieces like the story characters have, only we can mix and match them together, would allow creators to do a lot of new interesting stuff with their costumes and the characters in their levels. A couple of the costume pieces in the Incredibles pack had different shaped torsos and I see them used often.

Like what Kiminski said a featureless face would be really useful. Here are what some people are already doing to change Sackboy's face:

I've added the faceless costume idea took me a short bit to think of what costume part it should be. i decided it be best if it were two parts. a part that removes just the eyes. and a part that'd be in the mouth zone that would replace the head model. i considered making it in the head gear zone but then people would not be able to wear hats with it. so mouth zone be best. *mew2012-05-14 17:30:00

This is a brilliant idea fumet. *clapclaps* I have had some costume pieces that have circled around in my mind for a while, so here are a few simple ones:

-Headphones. C'mon, I've seen many creators use decorations to replicate headphones. I feel that it would fit into LBP and I'm sure many others think so as well.

-Backpack. Like really, I think having one of those would be adorable on a sackperson (a simple one, like what Finn from Adventure Time has. (http://oi48.tinypic.com/2uypyl4.jpg)) It could change to the color of your popit.

-Shurikens & Kunais. I personally think these were needed long ago, when I saw a shurkien back in LBP1, I thought it was sooooooooooo cool, but I was utterly disappointed when I realized it was just an object and not a decoration/costume piece. I think these could work 3 ways: In your hand, on your back (maaaaybe only the shuriken could work here, I'd love to have a huge one on the back of my sackperson), or both could be on some sort of ninja belt.

Also, I'd love if there was some way to sticker JUST your hand when you equip your hand costume piece. Since I sticker my skin, it looses It's color on the hand and I see the ugly green checker pattern of the skin. I know It's possible on some costume pieces, but you have to be ridiculously precise. Some kind of...sticker shape editor to be used on your sackperson? (Sounds complicated, but jeeze...) >.<;

i'd say we need a lot of:

- new hair styles that can also fit under hats without removing the hat that you took so long to decorate
- a new section that let's you change sackboy's body shape
- more unique top hats
- regular clothing, RPG like clothing, armor sets, etc.

yeah I'll stop now not to get to 100 but you know what i mean...good idea you just need enough buzz to catch the dev's attention

.

Popit colored Backpack is a nice idea.

Headphones while would be nice, i'm not sure are really needed. since like you said we can fairly easily make some with deco.

Shurikens & Kunais should be Decoration. not costume parts. I've made some before using the clock hand deco.

far as the Skin thing. yeah there's a idea i've had before. What we want is a UV Tool for costumes. you know the UV tool for objects right? well this be the same thing except for stickers on costumes. *mew

.

New hair is a nice idea. but i need some examples if you want me to add it.

new section that'd let player change body shape won't happen. they would have to rework the whole system to make that work right. because costume parts like shirts would not be able to change shape to fit lets say a women's torso. so it's best to only ask for unique shaped body parts as normal zone costume parts.

Regular/RPG clothing may be good. again give me some examples if you'd like me to add whatever to the list.

and yeah i hope i can get this topic epic enough to get their attention.

In a deep honesty, I want a female torso (like the Ms. Incredible) that's easier to sticker, I'm tired of spending time trying to get a sticker on Ms. Incredible's chest.

I'd link a photo of a costume that took me literally 2 hours to get the chest right, but I'm too lazeh.

I know exactly why in a coding since why that costume part is hard to sticker. only thing that would fix it is if it also had a simple chest shape on it. and also i did include a simple female torso as i'm sure you saw in the list. and it took you two hours to sticker the torso? i know how to sticker that sucker in 2 mins. maybe i should add some costume sticker tutorials for people on this site. *mew

Is not as easy when you make muscle lines,(cleavage, curves, etc.) I often wind up taking the photo in the wrong spot, or have a part of the sticker overlap and have to retake the photo, over and over and over again. Eh, I must have missed it in the list. Guess that's what happens when you mutlitask.

I agree with the backpack notion, it could easily be a neck item so it can be worn with torso and leg pieces. One thing I never understood is why they don't have skirts for the leg section so you can wear a different torso with it. More types of eyes and teeth would be great as well, it would be nice to have teeth that have a top and bottom but aren't stuck in a grin, but open with the mouth. And more belts like Wolverine's as well, being in the waist section. Only other things I can think of at the moment would be what others have said about a no mouth and no eye option, and more noses, chins, ears, etc. Actually, we need more hair with bangs, I've noticed that the large majority of them have no bangs at all for some reason.2012-05-14 21:50:00

Ah A simple skirt for the leg or waist section, good idea. i'll add it fairly soon. hmm a basic belt would be nice too. I also agree with the teeth idea. and yeah i think a basic anime style wig with nice bangs be real good.

far as the other stuff you'd need to give me some examples in detail. *mew

Not a costume exactly and probably a bit too much trouble to introduce this late in the game, but how about glow in the dark paint?

I'm sure we could get some really cool results from drawing limbs or whatever in Paint and then sticking them on Sackbots. Kind of like the the vid below. Although I'd like to see some more neutral colours too. Ideally the same amount of options as the standard colour picker, with Brightness and Opacity settings like Sticker panel.

I think that an eventual Little Big Planet 3 should have different studios envyronments.
So that the memory usage goes for only one purpose instead of multi threading i create mode.
One envyronment to create stickers, one for decorating sackboys, one to make music

that sounds like the idea i had when modnation racers came out...a whole new sackboy costume system where it'd be in a completely seperate menu and you'd be able to rotate sackboy 360degrees all over, zoom in and out as much as you want, resize stickers/decos as big/small as you want for precision, making all costume parts seperate and still able to be equipped without removing other costume pieces (and if it HAS to remove a costume piece, give us a warning).2012-05-15 20:47:00

I want to be able to make a power suit without it looking stupid and uneven (Helmet is size of sackboys body). Maybe something like the tron suit but make the lights your popit color. Also there needs to be better hairstyles everyone uses hero hair we need better looking hairstyles or atleast get hairstyles that you can mix with a hat.

alright i took a list of what mostly everyone is asking for...

Headphones
Backpack
RPG and regular clothing (Need some examples)
More hair (Need some examples)
power suit
noses, chins, ears parts (Need some examples)

if 3 people can agree they like to see whatever above added and tell me a small reason why they think it should and what it be useful for. then I'll go ahead and draw up a art of whatever and add it to the list.
*mew

But i have to say I think the Everyday clothing idea is not really something that can fit in to this kit idea to much. at most I may try to add it as 2 costumes. 1 Girl Everyday Clothing and 1 Boy Everyday Clothing. but anymore then that would need a whole pack just for regular clothing ideas. but i'll see what i can do. most likely i'll try to mix as much as i can of everyone's regular clothing ideas in to just 2 costumes like i said.

PS: I'm gonna try myself to think of some useful wigs and add them to the list soon.
PPS: and i'm gonna draw up a leg zone skirt design fairly soon too

Alright got some art design done
http://www.freewebs.com/chaoswinds/Sozo/My%20Art/CommonCostumeIdeas-post.png

Boy Outfit
---
Hair
backpack (neck zone)
loose long shirt
Shoes
---
Girl Outfit
--
Hair

And I'm gonna add the Sticker UV tool to the list for sure now.

Sticker UV tool (you can move and resize stickers on a object/sackperson without having to remove it and replace it)
---
Also forgot to add this to the list.

Texture-less white smooth skin.

I think they need to just add more sections to place things...having to use sections that don't make sense sucks and especially if you have something you like equipped (like my frilly ruffled neck) but it gets replaced with something else you like (your backpack in the "neck" section)

or at LEAST allow the combination of pieces in the same sections or wherever you decide to put them.

I agree with you. and that would be very nice for the next LBP game... but have to be honest when i say it will never happen for LBP2.

I'd like the option to change your Sackperson's animation style, the way you can with Sackbots. So, for example, if you wanted a Sackgirl, having the option to use Eve's animation style.

Agree on the anime/manga eyes and the faceless option. That would be pretty cool.

The option to tweak the number of limbs (to a maximum of 6 of each) would be an interesting one, especially if you could equip a different hand/foot item for each pair of limbs, and if there were multiple limb styles (tentacles, insect limbs, etc..).

Proper wings would be good-and I don't mean things like the Flyboy wings, which are just accessories. I mean animated wings that move according to Sackboy's/Sackgirl's mood, and extend when he/she jumps. There could be multiple styles (insect, dragon, angel, demon, mechanical etc...).

Another idea could be completely blank costume items-cuboid or spherical headpieces, rectangular arm pieces, etc-that are made for putting stickers and decorations on.

Finally, I think it would be good if when you are applying stickers and decorations to a Sackbot or your Sackperson, if the L1 and R1 buttons gradually rotated the subject (like the L2 and R2 buttons do with the tilting) rather than use fixed 90 degree increments.

I do think we need a lot more basic clothing. Most of the T-shirts on this game are really long and hard to sticker in some cases. I've noticed that, apart from the modnation costume shirt (Which, isn't the type of shirt I'm looking for), there are no office, flannel or casual type shirts which in it's own way is quite surprising. I got excited seeing the upcoming kevin butler DLC but something tells me the tie cannot be seperated from the shirt. But that's just speculation. I'd be a really happy bunny if Mm made more casual clothing, as opposed to a giant cat's head helmet, for example. 2012-06-26 22:20:00

I already said it before. more then 2 normal outfit costumes in this kit is going to far. this is not a basic outfit costume pack. Casual clothing really needs to be it's own pack. this kit is more made for custom character creation. not outfits really. *mew

Awesome ideas Sozo! We certainly need more body types for sackpeople. I'm still hoping for a giant oversized sweater with the sleeves going over the hands :3 and player color glowy eyes.. Oh how awesome player color glowy eyes would be..

Also while I'm here with a bunch of costume designers, who of you is opposed to having costume pieces layer and clip through each other? I read on GetSatisfaction that some head pieces don't allow hair because they don't want them to clip through... I say who cares! Let them clip through! That would add so much more customization especially if you could have 2 hairs, head pieces torsos, etc. on at the same time.

I agree. me and almost everyone would be more happy with costumes chipping instead of not being allowed to combo them.

(clearly the people who work on these games don't create costumes within the game like us. so they must not understand)

and sometimes it actually can make awesome costumes by allowing parts to overlap even when they are not suppose to. I say remove the costume limits and let us decide what looks good! *mew

This. Someone needs to contact Mm about it, or start a petition even. Also, thinking on what Dortr said about the sweater, I've actually always wanted separate sleeves in the hand section, like from the elbow down and going over the hands. Something like that would be perfect for Vocaloid costumes <3
