Good Steam Games

Archive: 37 posts

Yesterday I got Steam as the PS3 version of Portal 2 gives you the Steam version for free. I feel that I might start getting into PC gaming a bit more (at the moment I only really play Minecraft). However, the Steam store feels a bit overwhelming to me, I have no idea where to look first. Can anyone recommend some good Steam games? Thank You.2012-05-12 19:47:00

Portal 1 and 2, Team Fortress 2, VVVVVV, Skyrim, Blur, Mass Effect, Etc.

Not hard to find something you want to play. For some, though, you'll need a very good computer to run it smoothly. What are your specs?

Already have Portal 2 and Mass Effect 2&3 on PS3. Will probably get the original Portal as I really enjoyed number 2. I tried TF2 as everyone is always talking about it, but I didn't seem to gel to well with it, not sure why (one reason was probably cos I sucked). Not really sure if I want to start spending large amounts of money yet, so that's a no for Skyrim (I'd probably get it for PS3 anyhow). Haven't heard of VVVVV or Blur, I'll check them out. Thanks.

I don't really know. All I can say is that it's a Sony Vaio laptop running Windows 7 (I know those aren't really specs). What I can say is that it runs Portal 2 pretty smoothly, which I wasn't really expecting as I wasn't really planning to use this laptop for gaming.

Depending on age:

Mature
Witcher 2 (play 1 to get the story; VERY boring though)
Half-Life 1&2 (including episodes)
Team Fortress 2 (FREE Forever)

Teen
Dota 2 (when it releases)

Everyone
Portal
Bastion
Terreria

Definitely grab the Railworks games. Enough DLC there to keep your wallet empty for the rest of eternity and then some.

In truth though, there's just so many steam games that I could write a novel on the good ones. So, best bet is to just go into the search options, look for a genre you are interested in and then sort by whatever you're looking for. (Best seller, good reviews, price... etc.)

OK, I think I might get VVVVVV, looks very cool. As for Blur, I usually don't enjoy racers very much (except the Motorstorm series) so I'll probably give it a miss.

I'm 16, so I checked out Dota 2. It looks incredible! I hadn't heard of it 10 mins ago and now I can't wait for the release.

Already said I would get the original Portal and Bation and Terraria look kinda 'meh' to me.

This, although Skyrim is an entry level game for open world adventure. If you really get into it, buy Fallout 3; at last the terrible AI, system, and acting in Skyrim will prepare you for Fallout (it's better than Skyrim IMO).

Also, Bethesda on console porting:

Whoah this thread has blown up. I don't have time to check what you guys are recommending before someone else comes up with something else. OK now to check out Railworks.

Note to self: don't mention Skyrim on PS3 again.

Do that. For always.

Btw, to check your system specs,

Start -> Search Bar -> Type DxDiag -> Type in the Info

Not hard

http://www.dota2.com/survey/experience/

Fill in that survey, when answering the questions, try to make it seem like you played Dota 1 before and you're good at the game. Do a little research to find out how much kills are "good" in a daily game, same goes for every other question since it seems like they send most of their keys to people that played the game before.

I've heard people get a key 1 week after filling out the survey and heard people get a key 1 month after. So it's not 100% that you'll get a key but you might!

They stopped handing out keys a long time ago. You're better off asking someone for an invite if they still haven't gotten rid of theirs.

ALRIGHT. I have some input that I really need to get out of my head now.

First off:

OK now to check out Railworks.

Kog was being sarcastic, there's no real point to getting it because the game itself is not great, and the DLC for the game outprices it by quite a bit, (The DLC for the game has reached about $1300 I believe.) so you'd be spending a lot more than you originally paid if by some magic you were into the game. If you are looking for tycoon, or strategy game and things of the sort, I can suggest Roller Coaster Tycoon 3, or Civilization V though.

OK, I think I might get VVVVVV, looks very cool. As for Blur, I usually don't enjoy racers very much (except the Motorstorm series) so I'll probably give it a miss.

Don't bother with VVVVVV unless you're into retro, really challenging games. As for Blur, it's something that's meant to appeal to all gamers, including people who aren't nessesarily into driving games. (I managed to convince a bunch of my friends who aren't into racing games to play it, and they all loved it beyond belief) Problem with Blur is that there's barely any people on the game servers anymore, which means you'd only being playing SP most of the time, which isn't a good idea considering the MP is the main attraction in the game.

Already said I would get the original Portal and Bation and Terraria look kinda 'meh' to me.

No. Haven't played much of Bastion myself, but I know that I'd keep playing it if i'd given myself the time. As for Terraria, I had the same mentallity as you when I first heard of the game, but it's a lot more than what people think is there, (What most people think is 2D minecraft) and it just makes for an all round good time, and I think that there's a lot of other people here who can agree with me on that one; plus the game is only $10, so even if you didn't end up enjoying it, there wouldn't be that big of a bite out of your wallet. (Look up some videos, and you'll see what I mean by 'a lot more than 2D minecraft)

And a few more games that I would suggest:

Magicka
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Left 4 Dead 2
Counter Strike: Source
Super Monday Night Combat
Borderlands
Killing Floor
Limbo
(Look up videos for all of them, you're not going to get anywhere otherwise.)

Happy PC gaming

EDIT: I was wrong, there's almost $1900 of Railworks DLC

Yeah I was a bit confused when I watched the trailer and you seemed to do was ride trains. But thanks for the confirmation.

I already downloaded the demo and didn't really enjoy it. So again we agree.

Yeah, when I do enjoy racing games, it's in MP so I'm not gonna bother with Blur.

Sorry but this is the first time that I'll disagree with you. My first hunch when I see a game is nearly always right. Personally, I just don't feel I'd enjoy either game very much.

Magicka
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Left 4 Dead 2
Counter Strike: Source
Super Monday Night Combat
Borderlands

I have been watching videos for every single game that people have suggested. I will check out all of these except Borderlands, already played it on PS3 (very good game, can't wait for the sequel).

Anno 2070

Thanks I'll check it out.

EDIT: None of these games interested me that much (apart from maybe Deus Ex, I'm on the fence for that one). However I did what people said and had a look around on the store myself and found Q.U.B.E., I really enjoyed the demo and was just wondering if anyone could give me a reason not to buy it.

If you think you can wait, it might be worth waiting until the next big Steam sale (the summer sale is probably soon) to buy any games. Steam do a lot of sales and they're generally very good, the last sale (Christmas sale) everything on Steam was on sale.

Just thought I'd warn you, in case you buy a bunch of games now that end up being like 75% off later on.

Thanks for telling me. I reckon I'll wait for summer then as I'm not too desperate to get anything.

I wanted to do that too but I heard that if you already downloaded it you're opted out. Just a rumor though.

Not sure if anyone already mentioned this, because i was too lazy to read it all, but, in Steam there is a nice MMORPG called Spiral Knights.
It occurs in an alien planet, where explorers found the misterious clockworks, and knights have to explore them and reach the core.

Only bad thing is you get 100 free energy points daily, and you need 10 to descend one level. You can buy more using crowns or real money.

And, the download and most of the game is free

Wow or don't waste your money on anything that's not good. Skyrim is a prime example.

I have over 60 games on steam and counting, and I can tell you what I still play and are enjoyable. But video games are all up to preference.

Left4Dead2 is still installed and remains installed because it's such a well crafted game with constant replayability.
Killing Floor is a great game to pick up and play when you're bored. I play this with friends a lot.

I currently have Dead Space 2, Deus Ex, and Batman AC installed because I'm trying to complete them.

Here's a list of the games that I like most out of my library:

Batman Arkham City
Battlefield Bad Company 2
Burnout Paradise
Call of Duty Black Ops & Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2
Day of Defeat (Source)
Dead Island
Dead Rising 2
Dirt 2
Fallout New Vegas (Bugs are terrible though)
Grand Theft Auto 4
Just Cause 2 (The story is TERRIBLE though, only fun for screwing around with nice graphics)
Kane & Lynch 2 (totally underated gritty 3rd person shooter adventure)
Killing Floor
Left4Dead 1 and 2
Mafia 2
Max Payne 1,2, and 3
Prince of Persia (Forgotten Sands)
Rage
Sims 3
Rainbow Six Vegas 2
Splinter Cell Chaos Theory

I have more games like teamfortress and stalker..but they suck and I wouldn't recommend them.

Starcraft II - Very fun, but surprise: most people can't handle thinking and multitasking at the same time (those micros man).

Diablo III - 2 hours. On realease.... Wow.

Games that I can recommend are:
Legend Of Grimrock - New dungeon crawler with old-school gameplay
Bastion - Great indie game, hack'n'slash gameplay (your laptop should be able to run this game for sure)

Co-op games/multiplayer
Magicka - 1-4 players
Diablo 3 (not on steam) - 1-4(?) players
DOTA 2 (still in Beta) - 5 vs 5 strategy game
Trine 2 - 1-3 players
Gotham City Impostors - Multiplayer FPS based on Batman
Dungeon Defenders - 1-4 players tower defense game

I managed to avoid the launch problems by having an exam the next day, meaning I didn't start playing until later. Played 10 hours over 2 characters so far, is very awesome.
