Urbex (Factory)

It's a long time since I have posted here but I use to quite a lot, mostly I'd play and rate new levels and give feedback where I could but haven't in a long time. I've created a few new levels since then but today I thought I might put my latest out there to see what people think. It's taken over a month to create but I'm still not sure what changes need to be made. The level follows the idea of urban exploration or "urbex" for short. Urbex is all about exploring old abandoned buildings and sites, as a photographer I used to do it every now and then but never found any similar levels on either lbp or lbp2 so I thought I would make my own. My original idea was to have the level almost pitch black so the player would have to carefully navigate their way around the facility, I just wasn't sure it would work. What I ended up doing was building 4 sackbots, 1 for each player with a pre-made costume of my own designed not just to look the part but to give the illusion of a working headlamp so the players can see a lot better.

I settled on 4 bots that all have their own subtle differences but are all wearing the caving headlamp, only mine actually works and a beam of light tracks the position of the player and where they are looking. The level is still no walk in the park as it is designed to be a sprawling industrial maze with no shortage of paths to take and discover. I've added a little environmental lighting here and there to highlight less obvious passages/etc but the real benefit of exploring is locating old folders and files that when grabbed give the player points. There are a few issues I need to fix but I thought I better seek some feedback first so I have a better idea of what is causing problems and maybe get some possible fixes.

Things I see as issues: I've had mixed reactions about the overall darkness of the level, some friends who tested it before it was published loved the darkness and some found it a little tedious. Although 4 sackbots work perfectly in play mode, once its published and I try it with 4 friends it only ever loads 3 bots - yet there is enough thermo left to load it. Should I just leave it at 3 players or perhaps even make it 1 player only?.

The first thing I noticed was that the level has fantastic lighting, quite dim, it adds to the challenge of finding files/the exit.. hmm, wish I could play it but can't quite at the moment... I'd personally make it a one player only, three (or two) other players usually ruin the ominous atmosphere as I've found out, but maybe that's just me... I think it'd be better if you're all alone in the factory.2012-05-12 14:39:00

Looks fantastic. I've always wanted to build a level in which the player explores the environment to progress, and is not just GUIDED through the level by obvious platforms. Got it Q'd 2012-05-12 14:43:00

It is too dark for my taste, but that's all I can complain. There is very good design in general. I like whole setup and original maze ideas. There can be find lots of paths and level has good replaying potential. The more exploring the level, more attractive it becomes. All this means that during gameplay I completely forgot about the darkness that disturbed me at the start.
About multiplayer: played with 1 more and with 2 more players. Finished alone. It is fun in multiplayer, but mazes need patience, and it can rarely find in all participants in the same amount. But it is a problem in all mazes, so it should not be a reason for limiting the level on 1P. Hence, my suggestion is: 4P (if it is possible).

Very good job, lisatiffany
