SkyFire

Archive: 15 posts

SkyFire is a versus game for 2 to 4 players, featuring top-down aerial dogfights. You control a single aircraft with multiple weapons, and your goal is to accumulate 3500 points before your opponents do so. Points can be gathered in a number of ways:
- Destroying another player's craft gains you 100 points.
- Whenever a player's aircraft is destroyed by use of weapons, it drops a points bonus. This is a pick-up that can be collected for an additional 150 points. This is a reward for destroying an opponent without getting destroyed yourself: do be careful though, because it is possible for other players to snitch the points bonus if you do not collect it quickly.
- Dropships enter the arena every now and then. These dropships will drop a collectible bonus power somewhere on the field, but they can also be destroyed for an additional bonus. Destroying a dropship gains you 250 points, and will also force it to drop another bonus power.
*NOTE: Dropships can only be destroyed using your aircraft's guns. Rockets, missiles and suicide attacks do not damage them: use them to dispatch of other players.

You lose 50 points when you crash your aircraft into any obstacle, or when you try to flee the arena. A 'Leaving Area' warning will appear whenever you come close to the arena border. When you see this, turn back immediately, or your craft will be destroyed.

The controls are relatively easy to learn:
Left stick: steer
R1 (tap): fire guns
R2 (hold): accelerate
L1 (tap): fire rocket/Super-Missile*
L2 (hold): decelerate
Triangle: release Flares*
Circle: activate airbrakes
*requires a pick-up

There are a number of bonus pick-ups available. Here's a list:

- Rocket restock: this pick-up will give you a new rocket, if you have used yours already. The rocket capacity is capped at one, but collecting this when full on rockets prevents opponents from gaining a new rocket!
- Super-Missile: a weapon that can easily destroy any opposing aircrafts. Not only does it fly faster than the standard rocket, it is also equipped with a constantly firing machine gun. It is capped at a capacity of one.
- Flares: these are incredibly useful. Releasing flares will distort any rockets or Super-Missiles behind you, allowing you to escape unharmed. Capacity is capped at one.
- Cloak bonus: this bonus power makes you disappear from the enemy radars for a while, allowing you to either escape a battle, or to gain the advantage using a surprise attack.
- Speed bonus: this power will make your craft faster for a short while. If you use your full engine power, it can even make you fly faster than rockets, allowing for an easy escape.

SkyFire was built to see if this style of gameplay is fun, so it was kept relatively simple to allow for easier bug fixing and a quicker release. If people like it, I WILL create a 'sequel', which will feature more weapons, more bonuses, a new, more interesting map and much more!

Great level. I only played 1 player but the controls and design was great the planes looked good and the so did the effects.

I can see this would be great with two players or more but i think some AI in there as well to fight would really make it special and stand out.

Good Work

I just played it in 1 player and really liked how the overall level was put together and worked. the ship itself is designed really well and I like how when you hit the air brakes the ships wings sort of dip in, its a nice little feature that stands out. It seems easy enough to pick up and play and the pick-ups work great as do the arrow indicators. I usually prefer platformer styled levels but I really enjoyed this one and will have to try it with some friends later - well done. = )2012-05-12 14:39:00

I'm glad people are enjoying the level! Thanks for the encouraging words!

I've worked on some AI planes a while back, but most making proper path-finding chips can be hard, especially because it can't get too complex: otherwise, they take up too much thermo space. I'll try to build some new prototypes soon!

Yeah AI ships would be difficult to implement properly. One thing that may be fun instead would be to add anti aircraft tanks that could shoot up at you. They would be simple with basic movement or none at all and just respawn now and again.

You could make it so that they can be killedby the missiles and machine gun. It would add that little extra danger to the level and provide a means for people playing single player to gain points and have fun.

I have created a few tank and turret models which I thought could be implemented one day - I'll try making them functional soon.

I've been thinking of what kind of map would be the most fun to play on - I think this one may be a little too large. A slightly smaller map would reduce the time you spend searching for enemies, especially when playing with only two players. What do you think would work best?
Also, for the 'sequel', I was thinking of a map in outer space, featuring spacestations in which you can dock and restock. There could also be natural hazards like asteroids, which could also be destroyed for some sort of unique bonus.

Really loved playing this...presentation was very nice. I especially loved all the little details like the planes catching fire where your bullets hit and the explosions were impressive. The AI works nicely as well, I saw several planes tracking around obstacles.

My only thoughts for improving it would be to maybe add some more dramatic lighting and scenery, along with new enemy types. The lighting in the day looks a little flat and transitions very quickly to night. Maybe something like the LBP1 desert background might give you a better feel and some nice sunsets I don't think your map was really too large, but I think it looked a little sparse in terms of features & scenery, maybe some rivers and rocks might mix it up. Maybe some features that players can destroy for points.

Also, it might be too hard to implement, but a HUD might make the gameplay a little more competitive. I remember Starfox having one in arena mode and it made it a little tougher when players can track you.

The map was a good size i think but like said needs some decos and things to liven it up. With more to look at and some ground enemies i think it would be fine.

A space level sounds like a great idea and will allow some interesting ship designs.

Yeah, this is rather good, I'm not really a fan of your chosen control style though. I'd rather push left to turn left regardless of which way my ship is facing. I know, strange right.2012-05-16 01:54:00

I tried using that control scheme at first, but thought it felt awkward. I can understand why some would prefer those controls, though: I use it in my top-down RPG. Biggest difference is that in SkyFire, turning your plane takes time. In the RPG, it is almost instant: your controls fit instant reaction better.

I've been working on some new stuff lately: I created a new spaceship model for the next level, gave it a simple HUD that you can turn on and off, and have started working on automated turrets and AI enemy ships.

Any nice suggestions for bonus pick-ups? I've already added a gun upgrade (which changes your standard semi-automatic guns to an automatic pulse blaster), and I have a few ideas for other pick-ups, but community suggestions are always nice!2012-05-19 15:32:00

Maybe a boost upgrade and multiple missile upgrade.

Even a shield upgrade wouldn't be that out of place.
