Scarlet, on the Dark Side

Archive: 21 posts

I published this one this weekend and am looking for a little bit of feedback. This is a dark level, and I made it, so I do not really need to see what I am doing. I need people who do not know the layout to help me. I also have not been able to test it with multiple players, so I have it recommended as a solo level.

Just played it through! Here's some feedback:
+ The music is very nice and fits your level
+ Great decoration on the spinning circles

- When the wall and the floor are both red neon material, it's hard to see the difference between the two.
- On some spots, you can still hear the humming sounds from the poisonous gas. You can turn those off if you want.

Anyway, since this is F4F, could you try the top level in my link? It could use some more plays.

I was impressed with the level Deurklink1 made. At first I thought the swatter needed to move faster but after a while I found it to be just fine. I have only ever made platformers. I think this is a great level that my kids can play, with humor and concept that the can easily grasp. This is honest feedback.2012-05-10 02:26:00

I thought the level showed promise, but was overly dark and difficult to navigate due to this. It's tricky to balance this with all the different TV's out there but I think it could have been a tad brighter.2012-05-11 07:30:00

Hi there, here is my F4F:

Nice look - i liked the scarlet and black combo. Overall level this looked really cool but a bit bare/simple in some places, also a little confusing sometimes.

The platforming was mainly straightforward and fine but it could use some more variety - a little over use of spinning grabable things. When you did vary the gameplay it was really good - i especially liked the platforms with sponge on one side that flipped upside down.

I think making it a race AND making it dark/hard to see is good sometimes but in some obstacles it was a little frustrating as i felt the need to be quick but i couldn't see. Not a big problem - mainly worked well.

I got to a bit where i first thought 'cool, this is different and a good challenge' but after 10 minutes of dying and ying a had to admit defeat (which i don't like doing!). The bit is where there are lots of small platforms with a light on one end on wobble bolts. Its soooo hard but with some tweaks it would be a really great bit of platforming. Mys humble suggestions are 1) reposition the third platform - its too far away and you keep hitting you head on the one above which knocks you off. 2) it would be good to see just a little of the other end of the platform. 3) maybe not quite so long, or an extra checkpoint ot make the 4th platform stationary - i got almost to end one time then died right before the checkpoint - aaaarrrrg.

Hope this helps, overall it was cool - a little more variety and detail would make it even better!

The platforms that you are talking about are grabable if that helps any. I got the same speech from my wife when I got home today. I think I am going to set the pause a little longer this weekend. I can not change the lighting; it pretty much ruins the level when you can see all of the background There is a section of red neon that is going to be reworked also. I made it a race because so you at least have some score when you are done. The level did not have the look I wanted with score bubbles. Anyway the way I see it is each level is a stepping stone to the next level, in more way than one.

You can make your own score bubbles if you don't like the look of the standard bubbles
Just put a microchip with a player sensor, a destroyer and a score giver an an object and it's become a score bubble.

This level was pretty good! I actually loved the darkness. It seemed that most areas with obstacles were lit just enough to be able to see them, though there were some areas that could have had better lighting. The blocks that flipped over were pretty hard to navigate because of the lighting. There were parts where I really had no idea where I was jumping.

There was one section where I think you were running on a reflective material with holo or sticker panel blocks in the background. The effect there was awesome! I thought I uploaded the pic, but I didn't... so I'll edit it in later.

I queued up some of your other platformers to check those out as well.

Thanks for the feedback on my level, here's my feedback in return

All in all a good level, but the difficulty was all over the place, sometimes it was really easy, sometimes near impossible. I liked the artistic style of the level, but at some points I couldn't see what I was doing. This is a better level then the plays suggest. To be honest besides the lighting the whole level was great, I wouldn't change anything.

I did change a few things this morning. I moved a few of the lights that seem to be the biggest problems. I added a few stickers that were more informative than for decoration. The race is also optional now and I got rid of the neon on neon section that was a little difficult. Thank You for all the feedback.

Played this yesterday. I was intrigued by the theme. I can see from your updates and replies that you have changed the lighting yet I still feel it was way too dark as it gave me a headache trying to navigate such a dark level. Even with a few added lights to areas just giving a hint at what was there I still found it confusing. Yet from what I did see I can tell it has a lot of varied obstacles and gameplay. Alas, straining my eyes and trying to navigate along with a headache from it, made me quit your level, which is a shame.

I’ve played many levels that have a dark setting but I found this one just too dark. I see you mentioned that increasing the light ruins your level. Also everyone has a different tv set up and colour calibration which you have no control over, so making a level overly dark cane be worse for others and not so bad for someone else depending on their set up.

However, I think that by using subtle invisible LED lights (without any fog) would definitely help without sacrificing your theme or design. This would give a subtle glow around areas and create shadows whilst keeping the overall darkness of the level. Setting a LED light to invisble and red in colour will definitely be in keep with your scarlet theme. Could try slightly off red towards a very subtle orange or pink would create a nice ambient glow with all the red of the level still showing through.

Plus sound would be a great indication of danger or movement from obstacles as these act as visual cues for the player.

The gameplay seemed varied with lots of obstacles but the continuity pace and flow between them seemed to be all over the place rather then a gradual increase. In some parts the difficulty was easy then it’s suddenly hard, for example where the rectangle blocks flip over. In some parts I had no idea where I was jumping or going.

Artisticly or design wise I couldn’t actually see much as it was so dark. But the black swirly stickers were nice and I didn’t see much in decorations or use of all three layers, front middle and back. Could probably add more detail by using thin layers in between. However I didn’t manage to get to the end of the level to see it all so I’m not sure how relavent my previous sentence is. Overall it seems the have lot of obstacles and gameplay, it’s just the overall darkness let it down.

I hope my feedback helps, it’s quite long but hope you don’t take it the wrong way. It looks like none of your levels have gone past 30 playes so I may try out your ‘Turquoise Blue, You, and a Circle or two’ level next, as it looks similar with the swirly stickers.

I stand by the darkness of this level. It is supposed to be dark and a bit mysterious. The level is supposed to be simple. There are supposed to be large sections that can not be seen that is the way I wanted it to be. I will give the invisible led lights a try today. I did not want to go this route but I think I am going to have to use a sackbot with a lit skin. That way everybody will have the same sackbot that will be easy to see. I will see what I can do. I do not know how to compensate for the individual TVs. I may have build something to adjust lighting, again, we will see.2012-06-02 16:21:00

Republished and I have set up a device to adjust lighting. I have no way to test it so any feedback will be very helpful. I had some material changes, adjusted all the lights, and incorporated the use of a lit skin sackbot.2012-06-03 23:13:00

Hey, just tried your level and thought it was great! I liked the light adjuster thing, although I was confused at first. The darkness really worked well but I think you should add some contrast in color, for example use a whole variety of reds, not just a plain red, because it does get quite simple at points. I loved the moving patterns of red and light you created throughout, the designs on the spinners were cool. Again, a more diverse group of platforming would just complement this level even further, if there is one thing you could work on, you incorporate the spinners into more interesting configurations. Other than that, I thought the level was a fun, long, and challenging play.

Since this is feedback for feedback, here are my levels:
Planet X
Part 1: http://lbp.me/v/bb6f0j
Part 2: http://lbp.me/v/bb6gqe
Part 3: http://lbp.me/v/bb6g7t (if you like dark levels, try this one, its very hard though and may need some work)

Anyways, keep up the good work, looking forward to hearing your feedback!

The option section at the start is very well thought of. Once you actually start the level the visuals and use of colour are very striking and set the tone for the level perfectly. Also the option to make it a race or not adds a nice dimension to the level. There was one section were I had to grab a circular piece of material and it raised itself up with a chain but it was very awkward to get onto the platform after it and I died several times. Apart from that the rest of the level is really brilliant, the whole athestic never becomes boring or bland because of the differing forms of platforms and contraptions used to proceed through the level. One nit pick would be the use of sackbots in the level as it would seem that they are not need as you could just do the level as sackboy so would maybe get rid of them. But that is just me being critical as I really really enjoyed everything about this level. Very well done.

To shotgun_69:
The reason I used the sackbot was for visibility reasons. The level is as dark as you can get making it a little hard to see unless you have a lit skin. Thank You for the feedback and I will get to your level this weekend.

To the brominator:
Thank You for the feedback. My next level after Blackout (http://lbp.me/v/c8qvs5) I am going to work on variety. That was the one critique that I was not able to fix. Great score too. I am really grateful for all the help.

This forum thread has provided me with tons of help and I wish I would have joined LBP Central sooner. Thanks to all.
