Glitch - Walking through dark matter

Archive: 28 posts

I dont know if this will work every time but I tested it twice and it worked both times.
Do the following in create mode (paused). Get a mateial (I used cardboard, others might work), make it into the smallest square shape possible and copy it into a group. Copy the group one above the other (leave a small space between them) untill the thermometer is almost full. Cover the area around these in dark matter. When you play this the shapes should fall down and 'explode' upwards, travelling through the dark matter. Once this has happened you should be able to walk through the dark matter.
Please try this for yourselves and as I said I have only tested this twice and I am not sure it will work for everyone.

Didn't really understand what you meant mate. Videos / Pics or a more detailed explanation would be brilliant 2009-01-03 19:40:00

I know it's a bit confusing lol. I'll see if I can get a picture or a video soon because it's quite a good glitch if you know how to do it.

I have now uploaded a video of it on youtube (waiting for it to process)

This is the video of the glitch here. The 'only' problem with it is that the thermometer goes almost full because of it, and sticks go flying everywhere, but it's still an interesting concept (hope it gets patched though). Also look at my mario costume

Copy this link instead, for some reason I couldn't get the video directly onto the website.

Exactly, that's what you're not supposed to do

You don't need the whole url, just the last part: in this case the G_I0b3b1Yh8. hilight that then click on the youtube button and voila!

yeah i tried that, but mine did not work as good, but if you take away the cardboard things then you should not be able to walk through it anymore.

Cheers!

Now I have checked if removing the wood stops the dark matter from being walk-throughable and it does.2009-01-04 15:26:00

Nice collision bug. The engine simply isn't meant to calculate this much physics at the same time, calculate all those collisions at once. Therefore the whole collision system collapse.

That's exactly the work a tester is supposed to do amongst other things. I suppose they did find out about that before release but thought it wasn't important.

Anyways, nobody can really make level or create something usefull outta this and if you remove the overload of block until you're back in the collision calculation limit of the engine, everything will become fine again.

This actually happened to me accidentally once. I was making my level, and in one area I put loads of small rings that would fall down, the rings "exploded" though, and suddenly I could walk through wood in my level. It was really weird and annoying as it prevented me of continuing making the level, I had to dig up an older version and redo a part of it :/2009-01-16 10:13:00

Yeah, now when I think about it, it would be possible to walk through any other material with this glitch. It just happened I was using dark matter at the time, anyway, walking through dark matter sounds better.

I think an emitter could fix the thermometer problem.2009-01-21 17:19:00

I think an emitter could fix the thermometer problem.

I had made the level so that it was just under overheating. The glitch doesn't work with only a few sticks. The main problem is that if I wanted to continue with making a level then there would be sticks everywhere, anyway there wouldn't be much level content as no material is possible to walk on or grip.
An emmitter will fix the flying sticks from going all over the place if I set the object life to under 5 seconds, but really I don't see much use for this glitch.

I have a level just published (Metal Gear Mechanical Bull) where a tank (bull) runs all over debris (rocks, wood, metal tank tracks, wheels etc..) and up a bridge and under some material that I put in the air. But......sack boy just walks through all of it, when I do try to walk on it. Some of it is dark matter with decals. Its not by design, but thats how it is. As it happens there are bubbles on the bridges that if you do it juuuuuuust right sackboy can collect a lot of them before falling through. Makes it fun and a challenge to get the high score on this level. Its almost a survival challenge. With a few more tweaks, it will be very soon. I know some folks here like to go for high scores. Feel free to beat mine if you can. Didnt mean for this to turn into a shameless plug

Right, once there is an extreme number of collision checks the game engine fails to do checks that could crash the game.

Thats for sure. I updated my level and took out debris that was causing the massive "collisions" and the glitch did in fact, go away.
