Long rumored and much anticipated, The Elder Scrolls Online is finally being unveiled in the June issue of Game Informer. In this month's cover story we journey across the entire land of Tamriel, from Elsweyr to Skyrim and everywhere in between.

Developed by the team at Zenimax Online Studios, The Elder Scrolls Online merges the unmatched exploration of rich worlds that the franchise is known for with the scale and social aspects of a massively multiplayer online role-playing game. Players will discover an entirely new chapter of Elder Scrolls history in this ambitious world, set a millennium before the events of Skyrim as the daedric prince Molag Bal tries to pull all of Tamriel into his demonic realm.

"It will be extremely rewarding finally to unveil what we have been developing the last several years," said game director and MMO veteran Matt Firor, whose previous work includes Mythic's well-received Dark Age of Camelot. "The entire team is committed to creating the best MMO ever made – and one that is worthy of The Elder Scrolls franchise."

-----------

I'm not liking the common MMO look (cartoony, likely third-person, MMO gameplay style); but I guess it'll be fun to see all of Tamriel.

I'm not much of a fan of this game. The MMO market hasn't been great lately, and Elder Scrolls was always a single player experience. Sure, I enjoyed the games and play through the whole stories, but I lack the 'interest' in making another character and replaying the exact same story again, so an MMO sounds like a bit of a turnoff considering there won't be much to do with the series' history. I may need to wait for E3 just to be sure, though.2012-05-05 09:28:00

but hopefully not at the expense of limiting the creativity of future single player titles...

Gah, I never liked MMOs. If it was more RPG alike. (less players and more detailed questlines and stories), it would be more interesting.2012-05-05 11:47:00

Well, this looks like an accurate representation of what people love about the Elder Scrolls

I find it funny how there's pretty much no one who likes this. Usually, there's a decent number of people on both sides on something controversial like this. But pretty much everyone hates it. XD

Would only be good if the combat was the same as the previous elder scrolls games, mmo combat is not good for a series like this.2012-05-05 21:32:00

Completely agree.

Having only started the series with Oblivion, I'm not entirely aware of the game's history, but I'd love to see something similar to Oblivion, only with much more difficult enemies (generally forcing teamwork), and the possibility of exploring everything in Tamriel. I enjoyed the combat design from Skyrim though, so perhaps a return of the 2 hands weapon slots. Would have much preferred to see something more complex with dual casting though.

If they don't keep the combat the same, I don't see much in this that will distinguish it from other MMOs.

Also, I really hope enemies/things wander. It'd be awesome to actually need to search for that nomad group rather than just go to some area to find it. And hunting roaming wildlife would be pretty interesting as well.

Questing in Skyrim wasn't particularly interesting, but what was unique was done well (Wabbajack quest comes to mind). If every mission was like that, I'd be very much impressed.

Having played a bit of oblivion and about half an hour of skyrim at my friends I can honestly say its for the best that they don't keep the combat the same. It's quite literally terrible and in a game like an mmo where combat is key to the game it's vital they make the combat unique and addicting. a more dark souls or dragons dogma esque third person combat system is way better for the game.
on the other hand having played those games I have to ask, how is this game in anyway related to them? it looks like stills from the ps move game soccery, not the kinda realistic style they went for in those games. whats up with that?

I just hope they keep the combat system and keep it in OPTIONAL 3rd person. I would very much like the hit detection and hit connection to be better too Over that, the monsters look fantastic 2012-05-06 20:40:00

I don't think it's a good idea. The MMO market is very competitive right now, especially with the Free-to-play games. They have to get everything right or it's going to fail.

TotalBiscuit has an interesting opinion about this:

I see what he means about the visuals. The art style of TES is more on the realistic, dark and gritty side. It's not a colorful, cartoony fantasy setting like Kingdoms of Amalur or WoW. But they're making the MMO more flashy and colorful so it doesn't really look like an Elder Scrolls game.

Right now, it looks to me more like a console version of World of Warcraft. You need to have a certain visual style for it to actually look like an elder scrolls game.2012-05-07 19:45:00

They don't just need to get everything right- they need to do more then World of Warcraft.

WoW has seven years of content, as well as people invested. They need to somehow convince people that their game is more worthwhile.

Not only that, but people who want to play WoW are already playing WoW. Copying a seven year old game and having less content isn't going to make people flock to your product. They need something new to make their game worthwhile.

Making their game more of a sandbox would have been better. That way, Elder Scrolls players would actually care about this game. But whatever.

Ew, it looks decent, but I would barely recognize those screenshots as The Elder Scrolls if I didn't know already. I heard of the announcement and saw the teaser trailer, never knew there were screenshots.

I'm not sure if this is worth my money, or any future The Elder Scrolls game. You can't really beat dragons for epic monsters and the Thu'um for [ur=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pz3_lTULsQA]super special awesome super chocolatey fudge-coated chibi kawaii desu moai[/url] super powers. My recommendation for including the Thu'um in future The Elder Scrolls game is to make the Thu'um shouted in their English counterpart. For example, for Unrelenting Force, instead of "fus ro dah," one would shout ?FORCE BALANCE PUSH!?

Well I don't know about you guys, I'm pretty interested on how this works out. If it's a good, fun game, then hooray for us. If not, then I'm ready for another Tinatic to set sail!

Speaking of Swtor EA have just published their latest financial results which list the number of subscribers at 1.3 million which is down 400,000 on the 1.7 million reported in february.2012-05-07 23:21:00

SWTOR's case is just another proof about how the MMO demographic wants something entirely new and never seen before. The story and world are well built but in the big picture it's just another WoW. It ceases to feel fresh very quickly. Star Wars' huge fanbase didn't help SWOTOR so ZeniMax shouldn't count on Elder Scrolls' fans to make their MMO a success.2012-05-08 01:59:00

So...there's three factions.

Aldmeri Dominion
Races:

Khajiits
High Elves
Wood Elvers

Provinces:

Elsweyr
Summerset Isles
Valenwood

Daggerfall Covenant
Races:

Bretons
Orcs
Redguards

Provinces:

High Rock
Hammerfell

Ebonheart Pact
Races:

Nords
Dark Elves
Argonians

Provinces:

Skyrim
Morrowind
Black Marsh

Which will you join? Let's look at each faction in-depth.

http://media.moddb.com/images/games/1/18/17564/altmer1.jpg
For places, the Aldmeri Dominion has some tropical islands as Summerset Isles, hostile deserts and rainforests in Elsweyr/Valenwood, and decorative elven cities all about.
As a people, they're unfortunately the prideful dudes who think they're better than everyone else/want to kill anyone who is a human(mainly high elves want to do that). They're in TES V: Skyrim, we know how they are.

http://media.moddb.com/images/games/1/18/17564/daggerfall5B15D1.jpg
For places, the Daggerfall Covenant only has two provinces unlike the other factions with three. Mind these two provinces are the smallest provinces there are, so this faction doesn't have a lot of land area, supposedly. Their lands are deserts, and mountains. That's about it.
As a people, they have some of the best warriors, Orcs and Redguards. Bretons are just some magic guys.

http://media.moddb.com/images/games/1/18/17564/ebonheart1.jpg
For places, the Ebonheart Pact has mountains in Skyrim, a volcano and alien ashland in Morrowind, and a vast and deadly swamp in the Black Marsh. All very interesting places...
As a people, they have the viking-like Nords, powerful Dark Elves, and cool lizard people. :hero:

I'm going to choose the Ebonheart Pact. How about you, even if you don't get the game?

I'm just going to come out and say it,
The concept(?) art in Warlord's post looks awesome.
Just looks like every other mmo on the market to me. I was quite sad when I saw it.

Yeah i think it is Michael Gambon, the actor who played him after the original guy died.
