...and we're back!

Archive: 78 posts

After over 7 days of work, we're finally back! We know you probably have questions, but, first, please read this post in its entirety. We've got a lot to cover!

What happened?

Last Thursday night (April 26th, about midnight PST), a semi-automated hack attempt hammered our server, and was eventually successful in breaching our defenses and temporarily gaining control over the site. When I discovered this the next morning, I knew it was finally time to upgrade our software.

Upgrading forum software is not a simple process for a site like ours. We have a ton of custom code that simply isn't handled by the upgrade/installation tools provided by vBulletin, so every time we upgrade we have to fix every feature, including the skin, by hand. Seriously. So, as you can guess, that wasn't a decision I made lightly. However, it had to be done, otherwise LBPCentral would never be secure.

Regarding passwords: We won't tell you not to change your password, but we can tell you that there was absolutely no evidence that they even got a hold of our databases, let alone managed to decode the hashed passwords somehow. All passwords stored on our server are encrypted. Even if we wanted to, we couldn't look up your password in our database.

Okay, so what's different?

Up-to-date vBulletin software (always good)
Seriously improved forum security (thanks to the newest version of vB as well as other behind-the-scenes fixes and additions)
Enhanced text editing and replying, site-wide (including auto-saving!)
Upgraded notices -- we now have a sliding notice system, which will allow for much more flexibility in terms of how we deliver news to our users. That plus a ton of new behind-the-scenes options means notices are extremely powerful now.
New donation system -- we can set goals, track our progress - processing is even fully automated! We've needed this for a long time now. I pay LBPCentral's hosting fees all on my own and, as a college student, I'm having serious trouble being able to afford it.
Improved skin -- not only have we added new stuff, we've streamlined as well, so things should seem much tighter and more refined than they were before.
Better Showcase level sorting -- we've improved our level filter so that you can use it in combination with any of the other available sorting tools. Essentially, it now works precisely as it should. Hurray!
New dynamic image resizing system -- much simpler and more powerful than our last version
New [spoiler] tags -- much better looking, and just as functional

Issues We're Aware Of

We now only support the latest versions of all modern browsers. If you are not using a fully-compatible version of your browser, you will be bugged to upgrade once every two weeks. It takes a lot of time and skill to support old browsers, and we simply don't have the manpower anymore.
The market is gone. The XP system remains, but the market itself is not designed for this version of vBulletin, so we had to leave it behind. If they update it, we will bring it back. Until then, the only way to earn profile upgrades is through building your reputation level on the site. If you'd like to upgrade your profile sooner, consider donating (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/misc.php?do=donate). A scant $10 donation now provides lifetime Donor Status and helps keep us around. That's a pretty good proposition, we think.
The WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) Editor sometimes misbehaves. The current editor, while much more feature-packed, also has a few issues that need ironing out. We're in the process of researching the editor in more detail so that we can fix some of the bugs that are still hanging around, but until then the editor may behave strangely from time to time. In the meantime, it's still entirely usable.
http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/ directs visitors to our main page, rather than the forums themselves. This is a known bug, but it's not something we felt impeded our ability to reopen. It will be fixed relatively soon.
Once in a while, an in-page video will begin playing. This is unacceptable to us. We've already contacted our ad servers with a complaint, so they'll disable that soon. Again, we didn't feel this issue was worth delaying the re-opening of the site, so we decided to leave it be for now. We apologize for the intrusion. We hate those kinds of ads just as much as you do.

One more thing I'd like to add: we expect issues. It's impossible for one person to catch everything, so we'll definitely need your help in order to nail down the rest of the smaller problems. If you notice anything strange, out of whack, or otherwise off, please reply to this thread and/or shoot me a PM (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/private.php?do=newpm&u=118). I'm completely willing to fix any problems that come my way, but I can't do that if I don't know about them!

If you have any questions, comments, concerns, or anything else really, let us know. We need your feedback to know if we're doing things right, so, please, share your thoughts! We'll check in every so often to keep updated on you guys and generally make sure things are going smoothly.

Thanks guys.

Only question not addressed is that of security. From what I understand of forum software, personal data like passwords are kept pretty safe. But is there any recommendations for users?

Oh also, great job on the updates and communication!

EDIT: blast slow typing.

Will the mobile browser version be staying?

It's awesome it's just that some of the logos are a bit too wide for it.

We haven't done any direct development of the mobile theme, but I can say it is something we'd like to support fully. I'll look into how time-consuming it would be to bring it up to speed. If we can find the time, we'll definitely do it.

Awesome thanks!

A very mild bug I've noticed is that locations don't seem to stay confined to the user bar (Just look at any post by ATMLVE) it seeps out and consumes all!

I actually would but the advanced editor doesn't let me see the whole post for some reason, maybe because it's too long. It's kind of annoying.

Same thing happened to my signature, I don't think the tags exist anymore. You'll have to use the tags for now.

One thing I'd like to mention: for some reason, the new donation bar isn't displaying donation amounts. I'm gonna get it fixed soon. I promise, we're not trying to trick anyone into donating more than they ought to!

This time around, yeah, it was. It's too bad, actually. If it was more than just me, I think we probably would have re-opened much sooner.

Great to see that we are back!

Not currently, but if there's a way we can support it, I'd like to. I don't know if our current setup would support it, though.

Do you want us to post anything different or unusual here?

Okay, the Donation system is fixed. Because it is possible to begin the donation process but not complete it, we still have to manually confirm each donation. That said, it's an extremely simplified process, to the point that I could even do it on my iPhone when away from LBPC and still set people up. I don't even have to send out a PM - the system does it for me. So you can expect donations to be processed much more quickly now. Which is good news for everyone!

Yes please. The more you guys let me know about, the more I can fix. I do as much as I can, but my perspective is still relatively limited. With everyone using the site and reporting problems, issues will be taken care of much more quickly than if it were just me alone.

Our new image resizing system allows for URLs wrapped around images, so we don't have to use the workaround anymore. It's actually a feature!

Here's the code for an embedded image with no URL:

[IMG]http://www.pixeljumpers.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/LBP-Karting-9.jpg

Which parses into:
http://www.pixeljumpers.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/LBP-Karting-9.jpg

And here's one with a URL wrapped around it:

http://www.pixeljumpers.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/LBP-Karting-9.jpg (http://blog.us.playstation.com/2012/03/22/littlebigplanet-karting-is-coming-to-ps3/)

Any chance you're still using the old skin? As a moderator, there's a chance the system didn't change your skin setting. You'd know, because nothing would seem different and there'd be a lot of broken stuff. Check your settings, maybe? Just to be certain.

That's pretty cool, but now my sig is messed up I tried editing it by changing the IMGlink's into IMGs, but when I try to save, it replies:

The following errors occurred with your submission

BB code url is not allowed.

...and when I look at the bottom of the screen, I see that under permissions it says "Allow Link BB Code
No". Are we not allowed to include links in our signatures anymore? I hope not, 'cuz it only makes sense to include links to our levels on lbp.me.

Hey CC, I noticed that large images aren't actually being displayed to their full size. It seems like they're locked into the post's width. Is there any other alternative to this, or am I just going to have to manually open the images in a new tab for now on?

Everyone keeps talking about a new skin and a snazzy new look but you are all just talking about the upgraded version of the old skin that looks pretty much the same...right?

When I said snazzy, I was referring to the new editor tools and its look. The new auto-save feature and different styles in spoilers and images were also pretty neat. As for the skin, I wish we were allowed to come up with custom skins and submit them for site implementation. I find this one too old to the point where I go the to default vBulletin skin just so it can feel different.

The forums load faster in my browser now, which I'm happy about. I'm still using AdBlock to block the banner and other obnoxious elements of the site however.

Aya disappeared as of last Sunday. His website (ayanet.org.uk) just up and stopped existing, and emails I sent were simply refused by his server, so I couldn't contact him in any way about this. I had to handle it myself. Nobody else I know has seen or heard from him, either. I've actually been really concerned.
It's pretty clear he doesn't want to be contacted unless he simply can't get online for now. He hasn't signed in to PSN for the last 8 days, either.

We haven't done any direct development of the mobile theme, but I can say it is something we'd like to support fully. I'll look into how time-consuming it would be to bring it up to speed. If we can find the time, we'll definitely do it.
Nice. I requested a mobile version of the site (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=66811) a while ago since it tends to either load at a snail's pace or simply crash the browser on my device.

I'm guessing the forums as they are now are already way more compliant with mobile and console browsers than they were under the last version of vBulletin?

Our new image resizing system allows for URLs wrapped around images, so we don't have to use the [imglink] workaround anymore. It's actually a feature!
It potentially breaks hundreds of old posts, though. Can img and imglink be made equivalent?

Spoiler tags appear to be case-sensitive at the moment, so gegege isn't being evaluated.

- Painful "Expand image to max size" for signature images. Seems to come and go.

Just to let you know, animated avatars don't work anymore. Or least this one:
http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2011/064/a/a/snivy___haters_gonna_hate_by_seeratheboss-d3az5hy.gif
That image appears to be too large; according to Aya large gif images don't resize themselves.

PHP's image resize doesn't respect animated GIFs, so you have to make sure the uploaded avatar is no larger than the maximum allowed avatar size, which is usually 100x100px, or 125x125px with the Ultimate Bundle.

2 questions...

Is Aya ok?

Will we ever get our xp levels restored? It took me 3 years to reach lvl.95!

Great job CC, no more withdrawals and I can stop bugging you.

Do you want us to post anything different or unusual here?
If so, members have noted that the LBPC XP has everyone at level 1 and you can only view 1 page of Ranks.

Yes please. The more you guys let me know about, the more I can fix. I do as much as I can, but my perspective is still relatively limited. With everyone using the site and reporting problems, issues will be taken care of much more quickly than if it were just me alone.

As for Aya..
As far as I know none of us has been able to get hold of him. Many of us are concerned. Hopefully he will get in touch soon.

That's really concerning. Do you think maybe he got his own computer hacked after he locked down lbpc during the attack? Surely can't be a co-incidence with lbpc going down and Aya's own website/email address disappearing at the same time.

I really don't know. He hasn't been on PSN in 9 days either.
If anyone knows anyway to contact him, it would be appreciated if you could let him know many here at LBPC are concerned about him and would like to know he's ok.

Thanks W.E. I'm glad to hear he's OK. On a side note, one thing that I didn't even notice before today is the banner at the top, between the Content bar and the actual forums. Those little arrows on either side make it slide to a new banner. Awe-haw-sum!2012-05-14 22:32:00

Something about aliens and tequila.... I think I heard something about ponies too but I'm not 100% sure, he was rambling and a little dehydrated.

I'll let him disprove my theory if he wants to but until then that's the story I'm sticking with.

I know, I put a disclaimer in thinking someone would actually delete my account.

In an completely unrelated note, I found a bug in the matrix:

To get it, you must thank a post at the same time the site goes out.
