Making stairs

Archive: 7 posts

Hi there. Its ages since i did a tutorial, sio thought I'd do a small one.

Here is how to make a working sackperson stairs.

Stairs are easy enough to do, but sackpersons always have trouble going up or down them.
The trick is to scale the steps to the size of the sackperson (or sackbots) legs. He will have problems going up it if its too big.
1. Pick whatever material you'd like to use (generally I avoid messy looking shrunk materials like sponges for steps)
2. Swirch on the small grid in settings and draw a step 1 high by 1 wide (3 layers deep for now)
This is a step, however, a normal sized sackperson (a player) will not be able to walk over it as its too high to just 'step' up onto.
3. Next, turn off the grid and make another material square block (any size, but bigger than the step.
4. Now the tricky bit- cut away half the step height wise (so our step is half as high) and thats the step made.
5. Next, copy our step and carefully, move it into position, so that the second step is exactly ontop of the first step.
6. Now move the second step carefully horizontally so that it is positioned half way horizontally over the other step. Glue
both steps togeather.

You now should have 2 steps gliued togeather in 2 stair step fashion. Copy these as an object and your wide stairs is made.
Now turn back on the small grid and place your stairs object. Now place another, and another.
now simply move them into place one step under another in a staggered ' stairs shape and glue each 'section to the last. till you have the desired height of stairs.
Some friends have told me that thier sackperson goes up these stairs as if they are on a ramp, so, if this is the case, simply repeat the steps for making the 2 steps, except, instead of positioning the second step half way over the first, put the grid back on nd position it beside the first step (horizontally). (HOWEVER, with this way you will need to make a backing to glue the steps to as they cant glue to each other. But it does give a pleasing 'stepping' effect for the player.

To make a narrow staircase, simply repeat all the above steps, except, make the initial steps 1 layer thick before glueing (instead of 3)

A NOTE TO REMEMBER- Scaling applies to sackbots as well as players. As a rule of thumb, for a sackperson or sackbot to be able to step up on something, the step should be a around half way up his shin in height (between his knee and foot). Just think of it like a real foot on a real step. (for a sackperson, 1 small grid square is the equivalent of you stepping up on a chair. So, if you want to use 1 small grid square as the height of a step, increase the size of the sackbot.

Hope this tutorial is useful

oh, this is interesting. i've been using a thin invisible layer of dark matter. are you saying that with this method sackboy actually appears to be stepping up the stairs?2012-04-26 15:01:00

There is an easier method that I have been using for quite a long time now
use small grid with any material you want
shrink as small as the grid allows
smear the material 2 grid spaces (horizontally <->) with the material you want
so it should look like a small rectangle
and then now you what you do is take it and shrink it down one grid size and it will be half the size of 1 small grid block
and you can copy and paste however you like and the stairs will be sack-sized and you can just walk up them
so there is no need for cutting
<- if you look at my profile pic to the left i used this same method and then turned it vertically

HI. well, He wont actuall do a stepping up animation (unless you make one usng a sackbot and timer), but he gives a little wobble as he moves fom step to step, its sort of a stepping illusion by 'stumbling' forward up each step.2012-04-27 13:54:00

Or you can do as in old-school games and make a slope, but add non-solid steps over them. This way the player will be able to go up, though its legs will pass through some of the steps.

To make these non-physical stairs, you can place a thin layer or use the walk through glitch, or use sticker panel.
