What do people like?
Archive: 13 posts
Well I hope this is the right forum to be posting this topic in lol , But I was wondering has anyone here ever heard of a movie , better yet , watched a movie called Howls Moving Castle? I've had a great idea to make a level based on it , but everytime I ask someone if they've watched it , NO ONE knows what it is! Everytime I make something I think is awesome , everyone else just looks at it like o.O So I'm wondering , what do people like? I'm sick of spending hours in create mode just to get trolled , i know it's the dedication that counts but I'm getting sick of it | 2012-04-26 00:46:00 Author: Unknown User |
I'd imagine films by Studio Ghibli are more likely to be popular amongst nerds, so I'd say it just varies who you talk to. I'm on a computing course surrounded by nerds and most of them have seen Howl's Moving Castle. TBH, I don't really understand how to answer your question - it's so broad. People like lots of stuff, but a good way to go is to create something with an objective of some sort. At a glance of your published level list, it's mainly giveaways you've created. Costumes are nice and all, but if you really want to please a crowd, you need to challenge them in some way. An objective or goal is the way to go. Doesn't need to be frustratingly difficult or anything, just something for players to shoot for. A level loosely based on, Howl's Moving Castle might be great - imagine a platformer with the castles sort of... Makeshift-ish, state of disrepair. The castle looked a bit of a mess in the movie, particularly on the outside, which, I feel opens up a lot of potential for obstacles and level layout. Hey, you could even have a section where the castle falls to pieces, (A bit like one of the Story levels where Huge Spaceship gets wrecked.) and the player(s) need to return Calcifer to his furnace. Also, if you're only spending 'hours' in create mode, then you don't know the meaning of 'dedication'. Haha. Try months. Without sleep. Or toilet breaks. Yeah. A decent level will take at least around 2 to 3 weeks. An amazing level, a few months. Maybe less if you're extremely well versed with the tools. Stick at something, and don't feel a rush to finish it or make it published. | 2012-04-26 01:37:00 Author: Ostler5000 Posts: 1017 |
Miyazaki = Nerd? I'm no nerd , I just like good movies , be it Hayao or James Cameron. But anyways I've created giveaways because I thought it'd be best that I create what I like , which IS costumes. But like you said people don't per say "give a poot" about costumes as much as I do , so I've found it to be a waste of creativity , time & effort. And yes that's exactly what I was thinking , more of an RPG instead of a platformer. & hours and months without a toilet break? That's not dedication , that's just doing to much lol , if you already have what you want to make planned out , it shouldnt take more than 2 weeks , if your winging it then maybe up to a month , but I appreciate your opinion , so thank you XD | 2012-04-26 01:56:00 Author: Unknown User |
Ah, an RPG. Different, which is always good. Unfortunately, myself and a few other creators who spring to mind can tell you, you'll have a choice - A well recieved level, or something different. Getting the playerbase to play things which aren't platformers has proved more challenging than it really should be. I would encourage you to build what you want to, just remember that the playerbase won't respond anywhere near as well as they would if you just shovelled more of the same platformer-centric ideas down their throats. An RPG level would only appeal to a niche audience, however, it's not a common level type, so there's definitely less competition. | 2012-04-26 02:12:00 Author: Ostler5000 Posts: 1017 |
Going along with what Ostler said, people like different stuff. Some people are complete platformer addicts, some people can't stop playing shooters, etc. Most people like unique things though, so try and play a few castle themed levels to get an idea of what (if anything) has been overused. | 2012-04-26 02:54:00 Author: Unknown User |
i just watched a trailer for it, and it looks like it would be a good movie, what type of level were you think about making from it? | 2012-04-26 05:36:00 Author: Unknown User |
I might be wrong here, but it is not particularly Miyazaki's most known movie outside of Japan. I am sure the japanese LBP community would recognize this instantly. Nevertheless, there are plenty of movies that are based on for instance a comic series that a lot of people never heard of; yet, the movie is accessible and enjoyable enough for the uninitiated. If you take this approach to your level then you don't have to worry so much about being recognized. | 2012-04-26 16:46:00 Author: Antikris Posts: 1340 |

why do you want to make levels that other people will like? make the level for yourself | 2012-04-26 17:08:00 Author: GribbleGrunger Posts: 3910 |
why do you want to make levels that other people will like? make the level for yourself I've answered this already lol , but it's because It's a waste of time now-a-days , I use to be able to create what I like instantly and feel good about it , now when I create what I like which is costumes , I get trolled , get hatemailed (YES I get hatemail) & I just get all around rude people. I've made 4 different unique costume levels that I know for a fact is not like anyone elses , but who cares? The females of LBP who are into costumes are teeny boppers , so they want dark skinned costumes with pink noses & horn hair (yuck) So like I said I'm going to try to broaden my horizon with something else EDIT: Explosions! & a lot of them. that's what people like. *mew face to palm , face to palm lol EDIT: i just watched a trailer for it, and it looks like it would be a good movie, what type of level were you think about making from it? It's an amazing movie I highly recommend it , and a moving castle of course, maybe a cut scene at the beginning with the scenery of it and the castle moving (i think i can make it move o.O) then it'll show inside the castle , the the town around in an RPG form , I say RPG because a platformer just doesn't tickle my fancy when it comes to this movie , maybe something else? EDIT: I might be wrong here, but it is not particularly Miyazaki's most known movie outside of Japan. I am sure the japanese LBP community would recognize this instantly. His most known movie outside of japan to my belief is Spirited Away , and that is true , but since I can't read kanji , katakana , or hirogana as of yet asking of their opinion would be rather difficult x_X EDIT: Ah, an RPG. Different, which is always good. Unfortunately, myself and a few other creators who spring to mind can tell you, you'll have a choice - A well recieved level, or something different. Getting the playerbase to play things which aren't platformers has proved more challenging than it really should be. An RPG level would only appeal to a niche audience, however, it's not a common level type, so there's definitely less competition. Totally true , people like to stick to what they like & not try anything different , I'm always open to new ideas but other people not as much. I've noticed the RPG (house , beach , hotel) community is pretty big though , but like with costumes mostly to the younger audience. I don't mind the younger audience buuuut they're the ones who'll happily give you bad feedback off of one little mistake. Along with hatemail & rude comments. Maybe you could add me on PSN & show me what you mean? | 2012-04-26 17:51:00 Author: Unknown User |
I've seen Howl's Moving Castle a couple times. I think you could make a level that would be fun regardless of wether people have seen the movie. Would this be for the LBN Tribute contest? As it's been said, people like different things. I look for interesting gameplay and visuals with some challenge, but not insane difficulty. I don't mean that everything should be super decorated, just an intentional and well executed visual style. I like clues (score bubbles, etc) showing which way to go, but arrows pointing the way drive me crazy. | 2012-04-26 19:28:00 Author: Pookachoo Posts: 838 |

I absolutely loved that movie, and would heart and play such a level multiple times. Cat Returns was better tho... LOVED that one. | 2012-05-06 16:15:00 Author: Unknown User |
