Community Objects: "Editable?" option

Archive: 14 posts

I think any object you give away should have an "Editable?" option, with the default set as "no" (well, really "X", but you know what I mean). Sometimes I want to give something away that I want to allow people to modify for their needs, and I don't have that option. Also, I suggest that this option only be visible if "Sharable?" is set as "yes". They would probably do that anyway, but it would be a necessary step to ensure people know that their item must be sharable in order for it to be editable (how would the game keep track of an item someone made if it could be edited endlessly?).2009-01-03 09:29:00

I agree, because if someone wants to change something and they can't, then the work is dumped on you to do it.2009-01-03 09:33:00

This has angered me a couple of times, trying to edit pre-made and community objects. Whenever you try to remove a single part you delete the entire object.2009-01-03 16:57:00

Well, you can see the settings on most motors, pistons and so on by pressing Square. You can adjust those settings even if it's not your object, and this in itself makes reverse engineering easier.

But certainly I think there is a place and scope for having fully editable community objects. This is a good suggestion.

Same here. I'm trying to conver the MGS4 Stryker into another similar vehichle (Said vehichle coming from a video game series I'm basing a level on).

This would be done by making the turret larger. However, I cannot detach the turret from the chassis. >_<

Although I've have devised a plan. A 'group' and 'ungroup' tool.

The basis of what I call a 'group' tool is basically, that you can, of course, group objects together (Without the necessity of glue). I can have two object two feet away from each other. If grouped, you will select both and move both at the same time.

Ungrouping would essentially ungroup grouped objects so you can move/edit them separatelly.

Another kink would be if you had two groups and you grouped them together, then ungrouped them, you would get the two groups intead of all the separate peices.

As a final note, I got the idea from a similar (Ok, it's indentical) function on another building game I play.

Also used in 3dsmax, unreal editor and probably 99% of all recent game-enviroment editing software

I think user content could be improved if you could break down community objects. Sometimes you just want to know how something was done and maybe use the process in a totally unrelated way...but you can't because of the problems mentioned above about deleting the entire object. I found this more often when i was learning the tools and I wanted to learn how something worked. Would be nice based on your suggestions of turning it onif you make it shareable.2009-01-10 01:17:00

That's odd, I've tried that lots before but it never seems to work.

Also, I think that being able to edit and throw away community objects would be great. I'd also love a check box at the bottom of community objects and pictures in your pocket which says: 'Enable Community Objects/Pictures'. This would make everything a heck of a lot easier than deleting all the objects one by one.
